In vegas you can walk a lot in a day and not realize it. Anyone know a good app where I don't have start an account, give my email or connect via Facebook
Just tell me how far I walk in one day.

S Health came with my Galaxy S4. It's been awhile since I set it up, but I don't remember doing any Facebook linking, etc. It counts my steps per day, but also counts when I'm mowing the yard on the riding mower (which kinda suck), but does a decent job of keeping track of my steps.

Problem is, I can't find it in Google Play. It may just be a Samsung only app though :(

I have Noom on my Samsung. Basically a pedometer. Seems to work pretty well, and I don't think it's linked to fb or anything.

Get a FitBit Flex wristband that syncs to iPhone and computer. Or an iPhone app called: BREEZE.
Or wait until the Apple iWatch comes out in 2015 that will sync to the HealthKit App on the iPhone.
My friend has the Breeze and I have the Fitbit.

I use map my hike for hiking outside. works suprisingly well and is pretty basic so not too much to fiddle with and set up.

I use mapmywalk - it's free. It can be linked to FB or used by a standalone account.

If you have a iPhone, the latest iOS upgrade has a Health app which measures steps walked in a given period of time. It's automatically downloaded as part of the update.

Do these apps work by GPS and does it use data on your data plan? Do they have any noticable difference on battery life?

Not sure what kind of phone you have. My Samsung Galaxy S5 has a built in pedometer app that runs in the background. No GPS signal required. I tried a couple of apps with my S3 but they wouldn't work with the screen turned off.

Just looked and the S5 app is called S Health

It would help YOU if you mentioned what sort of phone you have.

In any event, there tons of apps. Some use only the motion thing in your phone to track walking. We have a few in both phones. Some also use GPS to track your location.

Whatever phone you have just go to their app store and type in: pedometer

If thats giving up too much info for you then you can always just buy an actual pedometer - they clip on your belt, a basic one can sometimes be found for as little as $5-10 and can be bought from a wide variety of stores (IE: The Source, fitness section of Walmart or Target, etc).

If you have an iPhone, Apple's HEALTH app with track everything for you without having to start/stop apps (like Runkeeper, etc).

I would not expect GPS dependent apps to work inside most hotel/casinos.

Another problem would be: wouldn't a GPS app tell you distance traveled and not walked? IE: if you got in a cab or a bus and took a bit of a ride it would tell you that distance as well?
