Just for a visit: Cromwell or SLS?

I haven’t been to either of these joints yet. And my trip next month may be my last for quite a while so I'm going to try to see both of them. But, in reading Rocky Balboa's TR, I’m reminded how easy it is to get distracted in Las Vegas. And since I already have quite a few other things on my “hope to get around to” list, I know there’s the distinct possibility that I won’t make it to one (or either) of them.

I’m not talking about staying at either one of these places, just visiting. So the hotel part of the property is completely irrelevant to this discussion. I want to stroll around the property, see how much has changed from the last iteration, have a few drinks and maybe gamble a bit. It’s possible that I might want to grab a bite to eat, but I doubt it. Basically, I’m just looking to hang out for a while.

That being the case, which of these two would you suggest I make a higher priority? Is there something in particular in either that is a must-see in your view?

This low-roller found the Cromwell had a better vibe. $5 Craps, hotter CW's and bright interior lighting made my visit memorable.

 

If you're playing VP at all during the visit, I would pick SLS for that because CET sucks at that period, and Cromwell is no exception. If you're focusing on tables, Cromwell would probably be better. I liked both places, but SLS better since I'm a VP addict. Cromwell, I pretty much just walked through, it's was a very, very nice walk through. I know time is of the essence, but I strongly recommend fitting both in.

As you know, the Cromwell is tiny but it's very nice. SLS is off the beaten path so it's a special trip to get there. I'd combine the Cromwell with a trip to the Linq/Quad/O'Shea's. Those areas are totally new near the big ferris wheel. Lots of places to eat and drink near there.

How about a nice bar to hang out and have a nice cocktail or decent beer in a comfortable setting with decent service? Either place have something worth making a trip for?


Tringlomane - yeah, I gathered from your TR that SLS has some nice low denom VP. (Do I remember you saying 10/6 DDB?) How's the beer selection to bartop VP paytable ratio?

Bungadin - $5 craps? Damn. During reasonable hours? Or Tuesday at 7:54 am? I'm intrigued.

But seriously. I ain't walking there. If there's a dude dropping a deuce in the port cochère this is a legitimate concern. If not, I really couldn't care less.

 

I was semi serious. I took the bus up to SLS a few weeks ago from PHO. It's not that bad in the afternoon, although, like i said, i did comment on this on a TR about a guy i witnessed taking a dump on the Strip near Slots o Fun.
What i would do, if you have time, go up to SLS and check it out. Many of us in here feel the same as i do, nothing special, but in an area mostly deserted, whereas the Cromwell as well as others i have listed is in walking distance. The dude i saw didn't really care because there is hardly anyone walking to SLS, just cars racing by.
If you can, do both, if not, i would do Cromwell. If you don't care for Cromwell, well, unlike SLS, you can walk just about anywhere from Wynn down to Mandalay Bay, mid Strip to the south Strip. Also, there are plenty of bars, eats, entertainment, etc in the general vicinity of the Linq right next door to Cromwell.

 

What does CW stand for ?

 

Unfortunately I didn't get a rundown from a bartender at either of those places, I actually got okay service from good-looking CW both times at SLS when we were there. But when I asked what I could get from a CW, I settled on Budweiser. So obviously no pale ales/ambers/IPAs etc available directly from the gaming floor. She might have said Heineken, but don't quote me on that...lol I would assume the higher quality drinks are at Cromwell vs. SLS and the bar is definitely more "comfortable feeling" at Cromwell when I walked by. But if you're really looking for craft beer, just go straight to TAG lounge at Quad for that, same paytables as Cromwell bartops with 200+ more beers that are "compable".

As for the SLS VP, yeah, if you're willing to slum it for 1-line quarters or less, it's the best low denomination VP you can find on the Strip. The DDB is 40/10/6 (99.96%). Deuces is also 99.96%. But it's only on four units, so look in my TR, or VPFree2.com for details. The bank is basically shoved near bazaar meats in the top left corner of casino from the porte cochere, which hopefully no one will be taking a dump in front of...:evillaugh

Best actual bar tops are 8/5 Bonus (99.17%), 9/7/5 DB (99.11%), or 9/6 DDB (98.98%) for either 3/5/10 play quarters+, quarter+ spin poker (except for Bonus), or $2+ single line.

But if you show up at SLS on 12:30am on a weekday like we did, you probably can forget getting on a bartop for service. The center bar only has 10 of them I think, and they shut down the Sportsbook bar earlier. The center bar looked like one of the busiest parts of the casino at the time sadly.

Cromwell really surprised me. I was a bit skeptical even with the great reviews given it was CET, but it didn't feel like a CET joint at all. On the main floor they really nailed the hip/high-end boutique look and feel in my opinion. The CWs were among the best looking I've seen and there was great service everywhere. I played a little BJ and got ridiculously raped losing every hand so I think they stack their decks! I still liked them though.

 

As long as I'm not drinking Bud or some rot gut liquor, this is worth the price of admission! Thanks for the info Tringlomane. Bartops don't get much (any?) better on the strip.

These were my initial thoughts as well. But the pics/reviews have certainly encouraged me. Dad and I both got nice Cosmo offers with more-than-we-"deserve" freeplay recently. If we book a night or two there, Cromwell will be a no-brainier.

Did the stacked deck games at least have decent rules for the $$ you were playing? :evillaugh

 

I played a $25 table and it had typical decent rules for that amount. All the BJ tables down the main aisle were 6:5 but right behind them were 3:2 tables. They had a small high limit room but it was empty and I didn't check the games.

 

Craps at Cromwell was $5 on a Sunday morning. They upped it to $10 at 1pm as I was leaving.

 

+1 on this... I REALLY enjoyed the whole feel of The Cromwell!

 

I walked through the Cromwell this weekend - played BJ for a couple of hours - really enjoyed it - was there on Friday nite so saw lots of beautiful people

havent been to SLS, but visted Cromwell when i was there in June, i liked the atmosphere, the VP, and the drink service, but then again i have always liked this place for some reason, going back to the Barbery Coast days.
