No Chairs at the Slots???

I was watching an old Dean Martin Roast from 1976 and in the intro (about 24 seconds in) they show the slot area of the old MGM and there are no chairs at the slots.
Everyone is standing feeding coins into the machine. Was this standard at the time? When did chairs become standard at slot machines? Or was this just a MGM oddity?

yeah, back then it was all about table games, they didn't care about slot players

 

Today's slot machines are meant to be entertaining and hold your attention and thats why there has to be chairs now... but back in that era slots were pretty basic and would probably be boring to most people so the casinos likely never expected anybody would want to sit and stay and play a particular slot machine for an extended period of time, that instead you probably had your bucket of nickles and you would walk up to a machine, play a few spins and then move to another machine, do a few more spins, and then go on to another machine, never really staying at any one particular machine for an extended number of spins.

 

FWIW, I don't recall chairs in the casino scenes of Ocean's 11 either and that was 1960. I could be wrong.

Patrons look a lot skinnier in that mgm clip so maybe that had something to do with it.

 

Interesting, but does anyone remember when it roughly started to turn? With the advent of video poker maybe?

 

We started to go to LV in the early eighties. There were some stools scattered around, but not nearly enough for each machine. So we just put our coins in a bucket and stood while playing. There were times I found a stool and took it with me from one machine to the next. It didn't seem so bad back then, but I wouldn't think of standing and playing these days. Thanks to the casinos for making me comfortable.

 

My first trip to Vegas was in 79 and we stayed at the MGM, which is now Ballys. We had the same experience as VPDana. Just a few chairs scattered here and there but not at every machine. I did the same thing Dana did and just took my chair with me when I moved to a different machine. Oh, the good ol' days.

 

In that time, the machine took your money so fast you didn't bother to sit down :evillaugh

 

I remember when they started to slowly add chairs. There would be a chair for every few slots so if you wanted to sit you had to 'fight' for a chair. Sadly I can't remember which decade that was in since I'm not much of slot player.

 

That is interesting. I often play the slots standing up, but I'm more of a hit and run slot player.

 

No chairs in the Perry Mason series either when Paul or Della, Perry or all three would go to Vegas or Reno to track down some lead or client---usually a rich heiress or wife of the President of the company taking money on the side to satisfy the disease of standing before a slot machine putting in $ after $ hoping to secure the lucrative but evasive jack-pot. And they always had their handbag looped at the elbow of the arm that obviously had no skills in pulling the bandit's arm.

But that was back when the world was black and white. Not like now.
