So as part of a Winter Break trip, some buddies of mine are headed to the good land, but we have a bit of a minor issue. The other three guys going with me are Vegas virgins and don't wanna go downtown because they still think it's not a safe place to be compared to the strip.

We've already decided we're staying with free rooms from CET, but I think downtown has a bit of a fun, relaxed vibe than the strip sometimes, and I've had better luck with the table games downtown too.:evillaugh
So how do I encourage 3 Vegas virgins to go downtown, and see that it's not so bad?

Safety isn't an issue down there, to be honest. It isn't like some wild west scene like they may think. Is it crowded with beggars, street "performers", scantily clad women and drunk people? Yeah.

If I were you I would dig up on pics online or videos from YouTube or Vegas sites like VegasChatter or VitalVegas to show them.

And if they have never been they have no point of reference. If they say "well I read on the internet..." then you just ask them if they believe everything they read online lol.

I'd tell them to go down and give it a shot. If they don't like it then you hop in a cab and go back to the Strip.

Tell them about the Golden Gate Go-Go girl dealers. The MSS awesome microbrewery, plus the Berlin Wall in the men's room. Great free bands on Fremont Street every night of the week. $5 3/2 BJ games, better VP than the strip and generally lower limits on table games than on the strip. I'd also submit that downtown is just as safe, if not safer, as the strip. Also try selling them that there is a ton of action within very close walking distance. For sure get them to sign up on VMB, or at least look at the downtown threads on VMB. Hope you guys have fun!

Downtown will be an easier sell after they spend a day or two wearing themselves out with all the walking and sight seeing on the strip. They can see a lot of different casinos with very little walking, drink and eat cheap even when they aren't gambling and enjoy lower limits and usually better odds.

    I'd just take a taxi.

I mean like you don't really need to tell them anything, just a "OK guys, time to head out..." and then lead them to the taxi line, get in and just tell the driver to take you to Golden Nugget. I'd time it so you are going to get there later in the day and you end up at a pretty nice property and then as was suggested go see some go-go dancers and get some cheap drinks and do some cheap gambling.

Downtown is a must for first timers.
Sell them on lower table limits, better paying machines, and cheaper drinks.

Assuming these are dudes we’re talking about: I think this is the point where some good old fashion machismo is in order. You need to start shaming these pansies! They’re worried that it isn’t safe? Are you kidding me? If now’s not the time to make some vagina jokes and question their manhood, I don’t know when is. :poke:

Seriously though, it isn’t about strip vs. downtown when it comes to safety. It’s about tourist areas vs. other areas. Even the “other areas” are plenty safe for the most part. It’s Las Vegas, not Mogadishu. But the tourist areas are going to be very safe – whether they’re on the strip or downtown. Yes, shit happens. But it happens everywhere. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t get black out drunk. Everyone will be fine.

I've actually had more moments that have scared me when downtown during the day than I have at night. The only problems I have at night is the occasional drunk that can't stand up straight and wants to bump everybody. When it happens to me, I always make sure to check my pockets to make sure it wasn't a way to try to pickpocket me. I've always had a great tme down there though and if your buddies give it a shot, I'm sure they will too.

You could simply tell them that you're going downtown whether they go or not. If they feel it's unsafe, then at least 1 of them should join you and then he can report back to the others that there were no problems while down there. Of course, best case scenario would be they all go with you and they can see for themselves that it's safe.

Hire a stretch limo for two hours.

    Make sure it's after dark.

Fun sightseeing for a half hour to downtown .

    Explore downtown for one hour.

Meet limo at designated time & place (like) next to Four Queens driveway.

Use your last half hour to take you to some Strip destination you haven't seen yet.

Did this with some newbies (guys & girls), and everybody enjoyed it!

I am probably 10% strip, 35% downtown and 55% off strip doing sight seeing anymore. The strip to me is just way too crowded. That 10% might even be pushing it

Tell them two things, then show them:

    1. Gambling is better
    2. Drink service is better.

    Nuff said.

Let them know that a fifty-something year old female from a small town isn't afraid of Fremont Street, and they shouldn't be either! :rolleyes2:

If the only concern is safety, show them this:

I generally feel more safe downtown and under the canopy is the place where you see the most visible police presence.

However, I personally don't think first timers HAVE to go downtown, especially if this is a shorter trip. It's more of a second trip excursion to me. I only see it as a must do for a first timer if you are never coming back. If you can't sell them only the better gaming and such, let it go.

Why Downtown? One word: BEER! Within a stumble and a crawl from each other are Triple 7 Brewery at Main Street Station, Chicago Brewing tucked inside Four Queens, and completing the craft beer trifecta: Banger Brewing Company in Neonopolis with direct access to Fremont St. And there's some tasty brews to be had (comped, too, if you're playing video BJ) at the front bar at the Golden Nugget, as well as all the new bars in the East Fremont District. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!

My sister and I always split our stay between downtown and the strip. We have never felt unsafe and walk around without worry. We walk to the the outlet mall and between the Downtown Grand and MSS with no problems either.

Excellent reasons. Show them this link, if they still aren't interested, leave the virgins at home. Side note, one of favorite girls, Jackie is in this at the beginning.
