This trip was not in the plan when I created by 2014 annual and trip budgets last December, but I did pretty good on my May trip, so I was able to get in another trip this year. I also had a really good offer from MGM (way above what my play warrants) that I didn’t want to go to waste...so it worked out well.

In May 2013, I had a huge trip where I got on a super hot dollar slot machine and was able to play for 6 hours while only losing ~$100. I racked up nearly 4 times the TCs I usually get...so I think this offer was a result of that night.

The offer was from MGM for 3 comped nights in a Grand Room, $100 FP, $200 RC, and two comped tickets to KA.

    Now to start the TR.

This trip was with three buddies of mine: D, M, and J. The original plan was for all of us to drive up together, but that changed the week before the trip as J was going to fly up with another buddy of his and stay with him at Excalibur. We were pretty excited about this change because it would allow us to get some solid, Flight vs Drive data.

D lives in Tucson, so he drove up Thursday evening and stayed at a relative’s house. M and I work at the same company so we planned to just work half days so that we could get on the road by 3pm and beat the traffic leaving PHX and also miss the traffic in Vegas.

I left work at about noon and went and had the car washed (didn’t want to road trip in a dirty car), then stopped at the store and picked up some Pedialyte powder packs. D came over to my house and we went over to pick up M. I usually do all of the driving, but that results in me being exhausted by the time we get to Vegas, so D was going to drive this first leg, PHX to Kingman.

We pick up M and get on the road right at 3 like we wanted. About 40 minutes into the drive we get behind this truck with its bed packed with furniture and a huge mattress... all secured with basically dental floss. We are driving behind them and see the mattress start swaying like crazy... and I kid you not...one of the tie downs snaps!! We trail back just in case something falls off. Thankfully the truck pulled over and we blow by them.

We continued on our way, through Wickenburg and Wikieup. About 30 miles outside of Kingman we hit this crazy rain storm! It was raining so hard, wipers on full blast and we could still barely see. A few cars had pulled over to wait it out but we just kept plowing forward. The drainage on the road was so bad; there was literally a solid layer (~1/2 inch) of water over the entire road. We nearly started to hydroplane at about 60mph, but D handled it like a pro and kept us on the road.

We made it out of the storm and made it to Kingman to stop for fuel and dinner. We always eat at this little restaurant called Calicos. The food is very good and the service is always great!

We finished eating and as we were walking out of the restaurant I got a text from J that said they had arrived at their hotel, left his apartment at 3:45. I was shocked that they beat us by that much... about 2 hours. We knew the flight portion was only about an hour, but we figured the pre-flight ritual (arrival, security, boarding, etc) and the post-flight logistics (Getting checked bag, getting a taxi, travel to hotel, etc) would offset the short flight. Very shocking I will say. However, the flight cost him about $200...so for the three of us that drove to fly it would have been an extra $540 ($600 minus $60 for fuel)...so $270 an hour is not worth it to us.

At this point I am driving the last leg of the trip, Kingman to Vegas. Nothing noteworthy happened on this leg. We get to MGM, and the valet line is a complete cluster. Apparently no one can read signs, so there are several cars in the taxi/limo line trying to merge into the only valet line...taxis, limos, shuttles are all honking...it was a mess. We finally get to the valet, give the guy the key and walk inside.

The VIP Mlife check in line was open, with no one in line. So I walked right up to the desk, gave the guy my Mlife card, ID, and CC. I asked if there were any high rooms with a nice view available and he told me he would see what he could do. He clicked away on his computer and said he got me the best view in the house...top floor with a north strip view. I took the keys and tipped him $20

We get to the room and sure enough phenomenal view. The only problem was that the David Copperfield or the Calvin Harris sign that is on the side of the building went right over our window, so it made it a little strainful on the eyes to look out the window... and difficult to take good pics.

We unpacked and went down to the little shop to get some beers and waters. Texted J to see where he was at, and while we waited to hear back we hung out in the room and drank some beers, M and D took some tequila shots. I don’t drink tequila cause it makes me really aggressive and I turn into a huge Dbag.

We hear back from J that he is at the craps table at Excal, so we get ready to head out and M realized he left his phone in the car. So we need to head down to the valet before we head over. On the way to the valet I stop at the little store and buy a small bottle of JW black to try to catch up with M and D after their tequila shots. $10 for 50ml!!!! Ridiculous!!

We get to the valet and I realize that I forgot the ticket...so I go all the way back up to the room, get the ticket, and walk back to the valet. I tell the valet that all we need is the phone from the back seat, and that he doesn’t need to bring the car...just bring the phone. I figure they could kill two birds and just bring the phone when they bring up another car. But alas...they bring the whole car...which is pretty crazy because we were in no condition to drive. We get the phone and tell the guy to take the car back now...

We get to Excal and find J, he is playing the darkside in craps and is up about $400. We talk to him about his flight for a few minutes and then go explore the excel casino while J continues craps.

We walk over to the heads up texas holdem game that I was telling M and D about. For those of you who don’t know this game, you play heads up texas holdem against the computer. I have heard that this machine uses a neural network to learn how the opponent plays. D and I both play and win $60 each in less than 8 hands...someone needs to check that neural network. I then move over to my trusty Mystic Unicorn machine, I am doing pretty poorly but finally hit the bonus round to get me up $20, so I cash out. So far my hit and run strategy is working pretty good.

M and I go back to see how J is doing, and he is still doing well. We jump on the table, both playing the pass with max odds. Hit a few points and a few field bets, doing pretty good. While we are standing there, this group of three guys are getting really really close to where we are standing...way too close for comfort. So I ask, “hey man you wanna get in here?” he says, “Na, I’m just trying to get a drink...can you put a chip in this spot so she thinks I am playing”.

So I slide a red chip over to his spot, the CW comes by, he orders then gives the chip right back and says thanks and moves back a bit. Ok whatever. We then go on a pretty bad run and I get back to even so I cash out and M keeps playing.

I walk over to play some VP, put in $20, first deal four to a royal!!! HOLY MOLY!!!! This would be a great start to a trip! I hold the four, close my eyes, hit deal, and hear some beeping, hold my breath... and the beeping stops. I open my eyes to see I won 5 credits...not 4000. SO CLOSE!!!

I lose at VP and walk over to play some slots. While I am playing D walks over and sits at the slot next to me, says he lost $3 in the golf fish game and then puts hit TITO in the slot. He is on a quarter machine and betting 1 credit. He hits a few small ones and gets back to $20. He then asks me what the PointsPlay on the Mlife card are for. I tell him he can redeem them in for FP. So he types in his pin and redeems $10 FP. Still betting 1 credit he hits NOTHING until his last credit of FP and he hits for 320 credits!!

He cashes out, I lose....right then M walks over and says “Man that just got way sketch”...

M proceeds to tell us that while he was playing craps, the same group of guys got really close again. He asked if they wanted to get in and play, and again they said they are just trying to score a drink, asked for the chip, and M slide the guy a red chip. While standing there waiting for the CW the dealer asks to see the guys ID. The guy says “Uhhh...I left in the room” and the dealers says he cannot be on the table until he shows ID. The guy starts to argue with the dealer, saying all he is doing is waiting to get a drink, so the pitboss comes over tells the guy to leave the table. They continue to argue, the conversation level is escalating so M takes his chip back from the guy and immediately colors up and leaves. Security then came and escorted the guy away.

We then walk over to the sports book to check some of the NFL odds. I place $20 on the Ravens to win the SB at 30-1, $20 on the Lakers to win the Championship at 25-1, and I do a 4 game parlay for $20 on some of the NFL opening weekend games.

We want to go to NYNY because I heard Nick Swardson was going to be playing craps there, and we are all huge fans of Nick in Grandma’s Boy...regularly quoting it. So we walk back to the craps table and tell J that we are going to NYNY and to hit us up if he comes over.

We walk over to NYNY look around for Nick and can’t find him. While searching, we find the Green Machine slot and we have to play it. I throw in $40 and say I am going to do 8 spins and then cash out whatever I have...I have a few blanks but then hit a few $10s and a $20 and cash out up $10. Next D puts in $40, has a few spins, is down to $6, spins and hits $65 so he cashes out. M donks off $20.

There was a guy watching us so we told him he was up and stood by to watch. He put in $3, and asked how you play, so we explained and suggested he put in a few more dollars to get to the max bet of 5 credits, he does and spins and hits $100 on the first reel! We all cheer and congratulate the guy.

We are walking to look for something else to do and I see the roulette table that I did well on last trip. I stop and buy in for $100, I am betting only the prime numbers. I end up hitting four numbers and ask for a green each time I hit, I lose all of my tokens so I take the four greens I have and put them all on black...it hits 17!!! WHERE ARE NATE AND BEEJAY!!!!

I go to the cage and cash out. We walk around again to look for Nick, I even asked a few people that worked there (I was smashed drunk), and they gave me answers like “now where did you hear that” and would wink. One told me he was playing in the high limit room, but I didn’t see him in there.

We are getting ready to leave and head over to Hooters for some VP and on the way out I saw a craps table with an opening, I jump on and throw $20 on the field and say money plays. Lose. Another $20, money plays. Lose. Another $20 money plays, it hits, press, hits, press, hits!! Cash out!!! Go back to the cage and cash in and off to Hooters we go! I am up about $200 at this point

Sorry for the lack of win pics...having trouble remembering to take them now that the booze it taking over...

It’s about 3am and we get to Hooters, this is where it all goes downhill for me. Right when we walk in, we see an open roulette table with a $5 min. I jump on a buy in for $100, continue to bet my primes and hit nothing. I but in for another $100 and hit only one in 6 spins. So now I change my strategy and start betting all of the corners in the middle section...hit a few but not making much. At this point M buys in for $20. I change to betting 17, 20, and the 2nd column. I sometime use this strategy because if anything in the column hits, I break even for that spin and can chase the 17 or 20 longer.

M’s first bet he puts $5 on the green split... and wouldntchya know...it hits!!! M has the crazy ability to predict the green numbers...he does it all the time when watching and he isn’t playing, but this is the first time he has while playing.

Two spins later he does it again!!! He turns $20 into $200 and cashes out! I lose $200

We are walking to find VP and I see a three card poker table and want to play, I lose $100 in a few minutes and call the game stupid and walk away...continue to go to play VP and see a blackjack table. I jump on and lose $200 in no time...man...when it rains it pours!

We continue our walk to play VP and I see a digital craps machine, I want to win my money back so I throw $40 on the field, lose, $40 more, lose. Hmmm maybe I should stop...$40 more on the field, hits!! Press, lose. $40 more, lose, last $40 I have on me...lose. I feel like a total doofus...

So the whole reason we went to Hooters was to play VP...which we never did because I lost all my money before we even made it to the machines...walked in up $200 walked out down $500...

Worst part about losing all of my money at Hooters...I got ZERO Mlife credit for it...

So we leave to head back to MGM to sleep, we go outside and we can see the sun is starting to come up...FML!!!

We get back to the room and pound some Pedialyte and pass out.

Get up the next morning after about 6 hours of sleep and feel amazing! The Pedialyte really works!!! Definitely will be on my packing list from now on!

I am the first to get up and get ready. I head down to the concierge to get the KA tickets, I have already seen KA so I am just going to give M and D the tickets...neither of them have seen a Cirque Du Solei show. While on the floor I run by the Mlife desk to activate my FP. Head back up to the room and the others are ready to go get food. We go to TAP inside MGM, each order a liter of beer and a burger...delicious!!!

I charge the whole meal to the room so I can use my RCs, and make the guys leave the tip (because you can’t pay tips with RCs).

At this point I want to head down to Margaritaville and play Mississippi Stud, I have been telling M and D about this game for quite some time and am excited for them to try it, I have had great success at this game...but ONLY at Margaritaville... and ONLY in a single spot at the table. I text J to see what he is up to and he is at Wicked Spoon at Cosmo doing the all you can eat and drink brunch. I told him we would be at Margaritaville if he wants to swing by. D isn’t feeling well, not hungover sick, but literally caught a bug sick, so he stays back and relaxes in the room. M and I walk down to Margaritaville and on the way we walk through Cromwell. We didn’t stay and play, just walked through, but I really like the atmosphere from what I could tell.

We get to Margaritaville and right when we walk up, the Mississippi Stud table empties out. M and I sit down each buy in for $100. First hand, M hits two pair...he likes this game so far. From then on it was just a grind...neither of us had any pocket no brainers the entire session. I was doing decent, had a few pairs and a few two pairs, but nothing over the top because it was usually the river that would give me the win. M ended up losing $200 (which really pissed him off because it was all of his winnings from the night before), he hates this game now. I cashed out up $100 after a nice three of a kind hit.

We didn’t want to walk back because it was so hot out, and we thought the monorail was free, so we walked to the Flamingo monorail stop... and it’s not free...$5 each for a one way ticket...oh well it’s worth it to avoid the heat and way cheaper than a taxi. We get back to MGM and go up to the room so M can change for the show.

M and D head off to the show and I stay in the room and take a quick nap. I wake up and head down to play my FP and the Lion’s Share. I ran the FP through a $1 Top Dollar slot...worst FP run I have ever had, turned $100FP into $17 cash... didn’t hit a single feature round. I then head over to the Lion’s Share to play my ritual $60...I play for about 40 minutes but then lose. The show should be ending soon so I hang out near the Lion’s Share and watch others play, chit-chat about how and where they had heard about the machine, and answer any questions they might have about the history and/or rumors.

The show ends and the guys met up with me, they loved the show, both being engineers they really loved the articulating stage and M was just awestruck by the jump ropper on top of the balancing cylinders. We are all hungry so we hit up the food court to get something to eat and decide what we wanted to do.

I wanted to play the new Electric Blackjack machine that I had seen in a fellow VBMers TR. We find one near Hakkasan, which was great because we could play and check out the talent. There was another person playing with us and my goodness...this guy was horrible...Doubling on 12, splitting 10s, hitting 14 against a dealer 6...he actually hit an 18 against a 4 once...caught the 3 and thought he was Nostradamus. We played for a bit and all won some (except the guy who sucked). We then wanted to find the Green Machine at MGM, so we started over to where I remember it being in May...it wasn’t there, so we try a different spot that we know it had been in the past...not there, try a third spot we had seen it before...nope. So I asked a slot attendant and they told us it was at one of the places we already checked. Oh well.

We decided to go play the other new Electric Blackjack game (same game, but a second one on site). Play that for about an hour and M decides to go the bed. I am feeling gully so I bet $100, 12 against a 10, hit, bust...ouch. I do it again, 19 against an ace, Insurance? No way, dealer flips for 21...SHIT!! Try it again with $140, 20 against an ace...no way...not twice in a row...yep...dealer flips for 21...GRRRRR!! on tilt I throw another $100 in, 20 against a 6...ok good, Stand, dealer flips a 5...no F’ing way!! Draws a 4...then a ten...dealer busts...phew!! Still on tilt I do it again, $100 bet, 15 against an 8...I decide to stand; dealer flips a 8, hits a ten, bust! I am feeling my luck is running out so I bump it back down to $5, and of course...blackjack...FML! About ten more minutes of up and down and then D calls it a night, I play for about another hour and then cash out with $360 (put $500 in total).

I go play some VP, while I am playing, this older lady sits down next to me and asks how I am doing. I say up and down, and she starts to tell me how that machine was giving her lots of three-of-a-kinds earlier. I tell her it has given me a few already. She then asks if my wife is around here somewhere...now...I am not married, nor do I wear a ring...so instantly I think she is phishing for a good time. I lie and jokingly say “yea, she is around somewhere probably playing slots and losing all of my money”. Then the lady says if I get bored later that she will be around this area and to track her down, then walks away. This makes 7 trips in a row that I have been approached by a hooker...someone about me must say lonely LOL

I get bored of VP, and start to head back to the room to go to sleep, I see a digital roulette machine...so I hope on and play my normal primes, hit a few, nothing to crazy. I then notice that it has been red 7 times in a row...so in my drunken state I convince myself it must be black next, so I put $100 on black...it’s red. No way it’s gonna be 9 times in a row...right?, another $100 on black...its red. 10 times?!?! No chance...my last $100 on black...its red. FUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKK

I am broke and beaten...so I go up to the room, more Pedialyte, and pass out.

Wake up the next day; go down to the front desk to check out and make sure they take off the RC. Only used $110 of the $200 RC...feels like a waste...should have had another liter of beer!!!

We pack up, head down to the valet, get the car and hit the road. Stop in Kingman for fuel and food (which turns out to be the worst decision of the trip).

We are continuing along, get on the 93, about 10 minutes along; we see tons of brakes lights ahead and cars abruptly stopping. M is driving so he starts to break and I reach over and turn on the flashers to signal to the cars behind us that we are stopping fast. We come to a complete stop...we can see about 8 cars ahead of us. About 2 minutes go by and no car movement, we see people starting to get out of their cars so M and I do the same. We start to walk up the road and his guy is walking toward us and says, “Rollover... dead kid”. We immediately think child when he says kid...later to find out it was not. As we make our way up the road, we indeed see a car on its roof and lots of debris...

We are standing there with a crowd of people, and over hear someone say the driver fell asleep. We then learn that the three tuners were all together in a group and have been tooling through the mountain roads and speed well over 110 mph. M and I put on our engineering detective hats and analyze the scene and come to an agreement that it appear the vehicle that crashed attempted to pass a car, got too wide and caught the rocks which caused it to lose control and flip. Saying the driver of the car fell asleep seems to be an improbable...since the crashed vehicle only had one occupant...the driver...so how would anyone know they fell asleep. It was about 15 minutes before the police showed up, the officer immediately checked on the driver, whom we had already heard was dead. The officer then went back to his cruiser, pulled out a tarp, and covered the driver side opening of the vehicle.

It turns out there was an off duty cop within the first three cars on site, so he was able to take control of the situation and keep the friends as calm as he could while we waited for the on duty police to arrive. It also turns out that about a quarter mile back there was a volunteer firefighter who heard what happened and hurried to the scene to assist...the main concern was leaking fuel. About 10 minutes later an ambulance arrived and the officers instructed everyone to return to their vehicle...he also suggested the occupants of the closest vehicles walk back down the road some (I only assume because they were about to remove the body from the vehicle). The whole situation delayed us about 2 hours... and there was about a 5 mile back up. If we had eaten faster, or didn’t stop at all to eat in Kingman we would have missed it

This whole situation hit me pretty hard because I have driven through these exact roads, several times, at speeds well above 110 mph...doing the exact same thing these people were doing...just trying to have a good time and get a thrill. So this wreck really brought me back to the reality and illustrated that there are speed limits for a reason. It was not the way we wanted to end an otherwise amazing trip. My prayers and condolences go out to the friends and family of the deceased.

Other than the ending, this trip was by far the most fun trip I have had in quite some time. We had some great luck gambling (ended bad for me but the luck was there...I just pushed it too hard), had some pretty big and wild bets, M hit the green bet...TWICE!! D came home up about $300, M came home up about $150, J came home down about $500, and I came home down $1020.

Honda's are meant for Economy, not speed. RIP

Great report! It's nice being with a crew that is down to gamble all the time. Did you ever end up seeing where that Green Machine was at MGM?

    Wow, so sad. RIP.

Is Calico's the place to stop? Because for some reason that's the only place I have ever eaten at in Kingman.
Did you take the express bridge over Hoover Dam? If so, did it take about an hour off the trip?

You have the right attitude about gambling. Never let a losing streak go by without doubling your bet and losing more! :wink2: Hey, it only proves your human.
Glad you had a great trip after all.

We could never find it. I am sure it was just tucked away in a corner somewhere that we missed, but we searched for a good 30 minutes in total throughout the weekend.

Calico's is pretty much the only real restaurant on Beal St....There is a Wendy's, Carl's Jr. and Subway if you need a quick exit. but we were livin the high life :p

We always take the bridge over the Dam...it saves about a hour compared to before the bridge was there. But i dont think it would add a hour now if you went over the Dam (if you even have that option any more) since a majority of the people are taking the bridge...so its not bumper to bumper over the Dam now.

My gambling attitude is only take what I am ok losing...which is definitely the right attitude to have IMO.
My bankroll management...now that's where I need work. Years ago, I started out as the person who chases the big win, which worked a few times...but now I am starting to use a more hit and run strategy. It was working at first...but I just got carried away. Each trip it is getting better and better

Great report! Sucks that you couldn't hit much though.

Watch out for that heads-up holdem machine though. Tables can turn very quickly on that thing.

And I think I closed my eyes on my 4 to a royal chance playing quarters last night (never had one at quarters either...:grrr:). Gave me a pity flush instead.

Better luck next time. Witnessing a bad accident is a cold slap of reality for sure.

    Nice report, thanks.

Glad you had a good time.

I really like those Green Machines too. Watched a guy a few years ago hit back to back for a thousand!

Sorry you had to witness the accident. It really is upsetting.

sad to hear about someone losing their life... thanks for sharing that OP, it's a good reminder for all of us to make sure we get there and back in one piece.... no need for speeding or unsafe driving, Vegas isn't going anywhere....

Sorry your trip ended that way. Our last trip home (AZ resident too), we witnessed a rolled-over camper trailer, due to high winds, outside of Kingman. It delayed us a bit too. I really dislike driving 93. Too many accidents. Hopefully your next trip will be better.

But 93 is sure a whole lot better than it used to be. Used to be so narrow and had chunks out of the side of it. Lots of semis causing delays and tons of crosses along the road to count.
