Anyone been to both of these places recently, and how do they both compare? We'll be out there in a few weeks to see for ourselves.
    Thanks,

I think Ellis Island is still slightly better, but I understand Binion's is still tweaking their product so it may be different results in a few weeks or months.

That being said, if you're downtown already, i wouldn't go out of my way to visit Ellis Island....Binion's is a still a great deal for the money and is good eatin'.

One other note, the 20 ounce cheap microbrews at Ellis Island can save you money on the beverage portion of your check. I believe the 25 ounce brews at Binions are $4 for a Miller Lite or $5.50 for a real beer.

I plan on going to both in 3 weeks :) We've been to Ellis Island for their ribs a few years ago, and liked them. Thanks for the tips on the beers. I'll report my findings when we get back, in detail!

I'm looking forward to seeing how they stack up with Austin ribs. And, it's nice that they're right across the street from where I'm staying.

A trip to Ellis Island is worth it just for the Steak Special which comes with that wonderful Beer they brew, so if you go for the ribs...you have to go again just for the Steak. The ribs are very good and really cheap with a coupon.

Yeah, we'll be visiting Ellis Island 3 times probably. A good breakfast, a good steak, and some good ribs :) Not to mention some good brews, too!

I thought I read somewhere that the Ellis Island ribs aren't really BBQ on a smoker. I thought they were cooked by some other method and then rewarmed and sauced on a grill.

Is this true or is it my 50+ year old brain playing tricks on me?

In another thread, someone mentioned that the ribs are steamed at Ellis and then finished on the grill.

That's correct. its a good way of getting very tender ribs and the sauce they use (they put it on during the grill phase) is very good. But its not smoked.

I think (from what I've heard) that the best true smoked ribs is going to be at Rolling Rock.

Ellis island is cheap, filling and if you time it right then you get to spend an hour or so waiting for a table and drink their fantastic microbrew. Its all about the whole package.

Ellis Island is always on our to do list and yet after 11 trips we still have not made it in to the place. Maybe this trip we will make it.

I think the name of the place that mikenhe is referring to is Rolling Smoke not Rolling Rock. Rolling Rock makes beer!

    Cheers,

Ellis Island does not smoke their ribs. They are, though, baby back ribs and awesome! My husband smokes some awesome baby backs, and Ellis Island ribs are not as good, but still awesome! My husband said the bbq chicken is awesome too! (okay, chime in, "Everything is Awesome" (Lego Movie)
