My wife was running errands today so I asked her to stop at a bank and break a couple of hundreds for tip money. The first bank she stopped at wouldn't do it because we didn't have an account there. I've never heard of such a thing with cash. Won't cash a check w/o an account ok, but not with legal US currency. F*ck them!

Bank Mutual for those of you in WI

Banks are for profit businesses just like stores.

Account holders should have privileges that non acct holders do not have.

Yes I'm afraid this is the standard operating procedure.
Could be to keep non-customers out. Or maybe something
to do with money laundering who knows.

Probably too many counterfeit $100 bills showing up.

Yes, while this happening might be new to the OP, its pretty much how banks have been for many years. Some banks might do it if they have a large reserve of cash on hand or the teller is new and hasn't been told not to make change for non customers.

For the most part they don't do it to keep the average person non-customer out, but more to keep the non-customer retailers out who can really go through a lot of small bills and change in a day.

As far as customer service goes, its pretty much a draw: to the bank they aren't losing anything by having such a policy and refusing to make change for non customers... if you are a customer then you should be happy they have such a policy because it helps to keep non customers out and makes the lineups in the bank shorter.

Yes, very first time I have encountered it and I usually do this before every trip, at whatever bank I am near. Hell, most banks here still have free coin counters, but I am starting to see a few of those stand alone boxes in grocery stores. The banking lack of service in Vegas was shocking to me when we moved there and don't even get me started on fees.

You can thank the many bank robberies for lack of service at mainstream banks here in Vegas. When I first moved out here there was a large string of them over a short period of time. Every bank employee was on edge for quite a while.

5-6 years ago, my sister-in-law was a teller at a bank. All of them were told to push online banking to their customers. She does not work there anymore, enough said.

Just go to a grocery store - they will gladly swap small bills for large.
most grocery stores will do just about anything for your business

So as soon as you moved there, there was a sudden large string of bank robberies? What are you trying to say...?

Banks seem to be getting funny lately.

A few months ago our resident Notary Public was gone so I drove a few blocks to a bank, as they always have them. Yes, they did, but no without an account, even if I paid a fee!

For my own bank, the branch I usually use is a suburban "pad" type of thing in a nice neighborhood. When you walk in, you are immediately confronted by a "suit" who inquires of your nature of business. No, this is not a "greeter" type person, he very assertively asks exactly what you need to do. Only when you get past him do you get to go to the teller cage.

On the good side, they do accept unwrapped coins with no surcharge, but I do have an account there and I always deposit them.

I've had the same Checking Acct number since Jan 1981. It has survived several Bank take-overs.
My bank has several branches in Las Vegas. I never pay fees unless I use another Banks ATM.
Question: You say you moved to Vegas? If so, then why not simply use a Casino's Bill Breaker?

Actually going to a bank to get change, well....
    - you can just buy something at the store and get change
    - in vegas, all the casinos have those machines that will break bills
    - casino cashier will break bills

Making a trip to the bank for change seems like alot of extra work. Then again, I never understand people that go to the bank and buy Travelers Cheques for a few hundred vs just carrying cash.

Not in Vegas any more. When we were, I essentially used my line of credit as a bank, but you still need a checking account for misc.

As far as breaking the bills before the trips, I just need some tip money. Lunch before the flight, parking shuttle driver, drinks at the airport and the limo driver in LV. I also have a travel wallet which is just the bare essentials, but the home wallet needed restocking.

    Bingo! We have a winner.

    This is a true story.

I was on Grand Jury duty and a case came up involving counterfeiting $50 bill. An FBI agent came down from D.C. to testify. He stated that 20% of U.S. currency above $50 is counterfeit. (He also stated that 50% of ALL U.S. paper currency that has been in circulation for over a year contains cocaine residue!)

He took the prosecutors out to lunch at one of the better area restaurants. He paid with a $50 bill. As a joke, they decided to check the bill out. Yes, it was counterfeit!!!

Actually the cocaine residue numbers on large bills is closer to 90%.

Ugh. Don't get me started on this one Joe. My bank, Wells Fargo, which I consider a great bank doesn't have this service. The local grocery store has a change machine that charges 10.9%. I spent over 12 hours this week sorting and rolling over $1,100 in change. Anyone want to take a guess at the look I got when I asked the bank teller for $200 worth of penny, $80 worth of nickel, $340 worth of dime and $600 worth of quarter rolls?
