Had a friend in town over the weekend and before our big BBQ soiree on Sunday we decided to squeeze in nine holes. We were three and we walked. No one broke 40, one guy didn't sniff 50, and we played a big ambling bruiser of a course set on 300+ acres and hills throughout. We made it around in 1:55, keeping ahead of the twosome behind in a cart. It was a good walk enhanced with more chatter and more banter and more needling. I know some can't walk for medical reasons, and some courses simply are set up to be well nigh impossible to walk given developer greed. If those two aren't in play just park the buggy.
I much prefer to walk. When riding and dropping the other person off to hit first, I lose all perspective on where my ball landed. Walking just lets me zero in on the hole and where I want to land. That being said, some of these courses are impossible to walk.
Used to be able to walk 27,but those days are long gone. Could probably do 9 or maybe even a short flat 18 ,havent tried that in about 4 years . My knees have held up so far so I dont want to overextend them and have to do replacements or something. I still walk an hour a few days a week and between casinos ,stores and whatever I get plenty in.
I was out of the golf game for many years. My old bag was a tiny light Ram bag. Decided to upgrade and bought a stand bag. Carried it and walked my local muni which is a tiny park course that is very easy to walk. No problem. A week later I carried and walked one of the newer muni courses and holy crap I was tired when I got home. Went out and bought a BagBoy Quad cart (love it) and a bigger bag and now all is right. I like walking but don't like carrying. Walking creates a much more "Zen" experience with the course.
Of my local group, one guy has to ride because of chronic knee problems that he's gonna have to finally address one of these days. So when we play I'll ride with him. Of the walkers, it's about 60/40 carry bag/pull cart. I use a Sun Mountain x-strap stand bag that's about 4 lbs. and once I got the straps set, it's like there is nothing back there. When I walk 18 at La Purisima, I know I've walked 18 at LP. I told Terri I need to golf 4-5 days a week and if I walk every time I won't be fat!
Obviously I was. Everyone I know uses a three- or four-wheel push version. Must be from the hickory-and-gutty days.
Still have my 2 wheel cart(15 yrs) and my Izzo stand bag hanging in the garage. Time to put them out on the curb for garbage day.
LP in the afternoon wind could make me want to walk. Right off a cliff. Gotta be the real early group there with the fairways still moist with the dew. And no wind. And I play Old Mac in the late afternoon.
Chicken!! It's a mere breeze. My out-of-town friend was commenting as to the many-club "quality" of the wind on Sunday. I told him that was but a breeze. lol I've still not learned to hit a low ball. I try to delude myself into believing Tom Watson's adage about a well-struck ball being largely impervious to the wind. Still gotta get you and Beej up this way for the Creakers' Open. First round at Sandpiper.
You might say I've played a round or three hundred in Vegas, and I certainly have faced some of the most brutal winds there anywhere, seaside or any desert or otherwise. But it's just always puffing through here. But I don't complain. It's part of what makes this such a great part of the world. And it's never 117 with that wee zephyr adding blister to injury. So Joe's heart swells with joy and pride: I will say the worst single-day wind conditions I've ever played in -- blowsand, cows in the air, really not fun at all -- have been in Vegas.
I walked 18 on Sunday (of course it was a Par 3 course). First time I've had a chance to play this really nice 18 hole Palm Beach Par 3 course right on the Atlantic Ocean for only $15. The course reminded me of a mini version of the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. I used a pull cart, my buddie carried. In hindsight, I wish I had carried, but it was a brutally hot afternoon with very little breeze, despite being on the ocean.
Walked 3 days in a row - at the beginning of the week. Walked 27 on the middle day.( the first 18 was on a hilly course ). I haven't walked 27 in a long time and I was ok the next day. I do get leg cramps ( often ) in bed, as I awaken. That's a really nice WAKE UP ! call !!!!! Hamstrings go right into a knot ! * I push my 3 wheeled hand cart ahead of me *
