Nice colorful rock formations. The place is a bit removed from civilization, so take plenty of water and a phone. You can drive though out if you please or stop and do some hiking.
If you have a full day to kill, go a bit further to see Zion NP. It is 160 miles or so from Vegas mostly on the interstate.

Its a national park as opposed to a state park

So if you happen to be over 55(whatever the age requirement) or so you can buy the national parks pass which is good forever all over the US. Takes the better part of an hour or more to get there off I15 North. If you want to make a day of it bring food because theres only a small visitor center with just trail mix. At the entrance or exit back to I15 theres a gas/casino/fireworks and snack bar . Beautiful spot with views and photo ops. At one area you can take a 20 minute walk thru a canyon with some Indian writing on the rocks to a place where they captured a so -called renegade Indian. Other area you can walk out to some western movie sets. You may evem recognize a few spots from tv ads.

It is VERY interesting and you should see it.

One MAJOR TIP -- BRING WATER!!!! Get a cooler, fill it with ice and bottled water. We didn't do it and there was ONE water fountain in the visitor's center with warm water.

Have fun...and stay hydrated my friend. :)

Valley of Fire is a state park and you may make a donation upon entry. It's really beautiful and strange in many areas. Real Coyote/Roadrunner landscape. It'll take you 1/2 day to explore, which can be done easily with your car and stops. They have a nice shop too 1/2 way thru the valley.

Here are a few pics for you to get a feel.

It's about nature, great scenery and beautiful colored rocks. I made 2 trips out there by motorcycle. If you ride, it's the best way to see it.
Like everyone else says, take lots of water and bring a camera!

Yes there is water there but as the red in the rocks would indicate it's full of iron and not very good "potable water" the sign says should say Barely Potable. If you are going to take the hike through petroglyph canyon to Mouses Tank wear good shoes most of the trail is loose sand and rock

Valley Of Fire is gaw-jus and well worth the trip. I might suggest going or going back via Lake Mead and visiting those turn-ins and viewpoints and such.

VOF does NOT take National Park passes.

    Are you sure?

I bought mine there and used it. Could you be thinking of Red Rock Canyon maybe? I could well be mistaken, but I have the pass unless I bought it at Red Rock but I swear I got it at VOF. Havent been there in 2-3 years so the memory fades fast. Maybe they just take the Senior Pass?

Well worth a trip if you like spectacular scenery. A few individual places to go see the petroglyphs. As others have said please take water with you - i's not called the Valley of Fire for nothing ;)

Don't wear white sneakers, the red sand is hard to clean off.

To confirm what dmr said, VOF is a state park; it does NOT accept any National Park passes.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area accepts National Park passes.

This place is my favorite thing about going to Vegas, since I first went, I now make it a point to go out everytime I am in Vegas. Next month is no exception- we are getting married at 2 pm in the Stratosphere and then we are all headed out to VoF to take pictures.

I always stop at the native rest stop on the way and sometimes on the way back. You can't miss it and you can pick up drinks and snacks.
