I would definitely post it on trip advisor, yelp, etc.

My assumption based on the OP posting is there was a band performing which in this case validates LET based on the state law. If there was not the OP should state that in his posting which would then technically be illegal.

The state's LET gives multiple definitions and one of which is: "Music or vocals provided by one or more professional or amateur musicians or vocalists"

"If the location has occupancy between 200 and 7499 and is in live entertainment status LET applies." So if there was a band performing there it definitely validates the tax.

There is a loophole when a band or performer is there:"Instrumental or vocal music, which may or may not be supplemented with commentary by the musicians, in a restaurant, lounge or similar area if such music does not routinely rise to the volume that interferes with casual conversation and if such music would not generally cause patrons to watch as well as listen."

But who defines the rise of volume? Owner will apply LET because if a state rep shows up unannounced and detemines it does rise, the owner is screwed and penalized. He's better off just adding it in.

Soon all locations will be applying LET to cover their butts and patrons will have to just deal with it because the state wants to get it's share of the money.

I can't believe these places think this is actually good for business

people either look at the bottom line of what something cost as the OP did here ($11 dollars for a bud light) or they don't

if they look and they care (usually they care of they look) and they see they have been chiseled for stupidity they get angry......if the damn tab just says $11 dollars and all that is on there is the beer and the tax then they would probably just think that is damn expensive and probably just go with it and even if they don't go with it what management in their right mind thinks they will be MORE LIKELY to go with it if they see that their beer is $11 dollars because of a bunch of stupid fees and other BS

that is about 50% of the reason I got rid of cable TV I got tired of charges for not having a home phone I could plug the cable box into and cable box rental fees (uh I can't get your stupid service without the box and I can't buy my own box) and all types of other BS......it just makes you feel ripped off and as if you are being treated like you are stupid

at least with the stupid resort fees I can actually partially buy into the concept of "we want to be the lowest price on the websites", but even then those stupid websites need to start just including the resort fees in the comparison

also I can't believe the servers don't get angry over this because all it does is piss off patrons if I know that my "gratuity" has been decided for me and automatically included (sort of the non-definition of a gratuity isn't it) then that is ALL YOU GET PERIOD even if the snotty waitress lets out a huff and when she reciprocates with poor service then I LEAVE! then she and the bar/club/restaurant get nothing and like it

from reading the OP on here I am sure he is a better then average tipper especially for good service, but from reading this thread I get the idea that he feels the same way.....if you decide the gratuity for me then that is what you get and nothing more......when you probably could have received more

I think the real answer for this is just start paying with cash and then at least you know what it cost as it comes over the counter and no matter the "fees and charges and taxes and gratuities" you see it right then and there instead of getting a credit card slip for five "8 dollar beers" that have added up to $55 dollars somehow magically and you can express your displeasure right then and there by taking your $11 dollar beer and leaving instead of running up a tab of five "8 dollar beers" to find that your tab is $55 dollars

honestly I have always thought and even known that some clubs open with the idea of make it in 18 months and then shut down and "retrend" and do it again, but Vegas is taking it to a new level at least with some of those 18 month wonders the owners have a dream of staying open 36 months now I think some of them would be happy at 9-12 months in business as a "plan" before they "reconcept" and start some new scam

Do they add these charges on only for drinks or does it apply to food too? We were thinking of trying it out but maybe not....

This LET in Nevada is new to me also, so I went hunting and it appears to be:

The tax is collected on 1) Admissions, 2) Food, 3) Drinks.

The tax is 10% on places with 200 - 7499 seats.

The tax is 5% on places over 7500 seats.

So on the OP's receipt for the $8 dollar beer has 80c Entertainment tax = 10%.
An auto Gratuity of $1.44 = 18%. (please feel free to tip again too).
    Service Fee of 15c = 1.8%.
    Sales tax of 65c = 8.125%.

38.125% on tips, taxes, a second tax, and fees, per drink or food item, outrageous!

Or looked at another way, the $100 I bring to spend on food or drinks only has true buying power of $61.88. Totally outrageous, unless you have tons of money, then it's no problem mon, be happy.

Welcome to America, Land of the Free. Free to be taxed to the Ass.

On another thread, people were complaining about the high cost for drinks at the Harrah's and Paris Piano bars. Some of the cost has to offset the entertainers for sure! When we go next month, I'm going to look at the receipt and will not be surprised to see the 10% added tax, on top of the sales tax.

Thanks Nevada! Another reason to stay the hell AWAY. :nono:

No wonder they call it the "Double Barrel". The name alone should be a clue!

Thanks Paperposter - I am thinking of trying the food on my upcoming trip. I guess the lesson here is to really review the bill carefully at any restaurant to make sure everything is copacetic before paying. A lot of people just figure the tip and sign without paying attention to details, and that is what places like this are hoping for.

I got hit with the LET tax on our last trip. We stopped by the Irish Pub in the walkway from Luxor to MB and grabbed a couple burgers and beers. There was an acoustic guy playing as we walked in. We asked to be seated in the restaurant area away from the music as we were not in the mood for it.

The waitress said no problem, sat us in the back all by ourselves. The bill came and I though it was kind of high. There was the extra 10% tax!

Ten percent charge for music in another part of the restaurant that we could not even hear.

So if you just want to drink or dine and have no interest in entertainment you better go to another venue.
For me, it's not the few extra dollars.
It is more the feeling of being taken advantage of.
I never really complained about resort fees as I got something back.
I use the fitness center and wifi which is at least a breakeven.

Throwing an extra 10% on the bill for some potentially obscure entertainment is a different deal.
    Where does it end?

I opened this thread expecting to read some amusing paperposter complaint. But this is a legit gripe and good info for people to know. Pretty ridiculous to order a single beer and find half a dozen misc charges added to it.

That was our thought too. Obviously the extra five-spot wont kill you, but no one likes to be screwed over. We even requested not to be seated in ear shot of the music. The place is much more of a restaurant/brew pub than an entertainment venue. It is just another silly add on. We usually do Vegas 3x per year, we dropped to two this year because of silliness like this. Long hauled this year, over charged on some other things and then this. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

I was not aware of the LET tax. How long has this been around? It's already tough enough for live bands to find a place to play and make a decent living, but it seems like this LET tax will push people away from venues that offer live entertainment.

In my opinion, the live entertainment should be a way to get people in the door to buy the $8 bud light, not an excuse to charge $11 after all the taxes and fees. In a city built on entertainment, it amazes me that rather than drawing people in with deals, many of the new places insist on deception and outrageous prices. It may be a couple bucks here, couple bucks there but its still coming out of our wallets and shouldn't be accepted... The only way to battle it is with our wallets and where we do choose to spend our cash. To each their own!
