Got Long Hauled, almost twice

Been to Vegas many times, this is the first AND second time a cab driver tried to long hauled me via I15.

Arrived late Friday night, cab driver said roads flooded so he had to do I15 - crap.....
Anyhow, I let it go, because I wanted to know what the $$$ difference is.
total for 2 people from airport to Cosmo, via I15 was 23.80.

Going home, got cab at Palazzo (we switched hotels mid trip)...he zoomed out off Palazzo and TRIED to get over to I15...I stopped him and said,
"can you take the short route, down Koval and on Trop"...you should have seen how wide his eyes were, when I said Koval....

That trip was only 12.10....

So, it was 11.70 cheaper...and that was from Palazzo not Cosmo (cosmo is even closer to airport than Palazzo)....

BE WARNED, I thought cab drivers were doing fine and not trying to long haul every tourist; but maybe they are changing back to their old ways.

They are required to ask you to take a different route, but no one said they wouldn't lie about the reasons to take it. Once you agree to the new route, you can't claim you've been long hauled to the Taxi authority.

 

Was it raining? I would have said, lets see them floods, sounds exciting.

Yes they had 4 straight days of rain last week / weekend. My flight was delayed for 90 minutes due to backup in Vegas. Everyone on the flight were joking about it - most of us were from Wisconsin or Chicago.....so delaying all flights for rain seemed "strange"; but it was true.

I asked him to take short route down Tropicana and Koval, that is when he said roads are flooded.

I did not see any road closures on the news...

The next day I picked up my rental at Cosmo and drove down Koval (while raining) with no issues.

Anyhow, at least I found out the difference in prices. Not a big deal

It rained on Friday night?? LOL I was there and didn't even realize that. I know we were outdoors until at least 8pm or so because we were watching the Bellagio fountains at Hyde around that time and then walked back to Aria. No rain at all then. Must have been later at night. No rain on Saturday either at least until late evening.

 

You can't get long-hauled if you have a smartphone.

Google Maps + traffic = giving you all traffic backups.

 

I suspect he's referring to the previous weekend. I saw/experienced no rain this past Friday night, either.

OK, so there's this tunnel that cabbies like to take because it increases the fare by about $10, correct?

They do this hoping that non-residents won't realize they're being taken on a longer trip than necessary, correct?

So when I sail into McArran, I want to tell the driver "Paris Hotel, please don't take the tunnel."

Is there a legit reason for a driver to want to take the tunnel to get to a strip hotel?

 

They will say it's quicker, and in some situations it just might be, but it will also be $10 - $15 more depending on where you are going. I dont know about you but i would rather save $15 than get to the hotel 5 or 6 min quicker, maybe no quicker at all.

 

The tunnel adds more like $5 to a fare, not $15.

The tunnel is about 2.5 miles longer, at $2.60 per mile thats $6.50 added for distance and since there are no lights you can shave at least $1.50 off that from the wait time you would end up with going by Paradise to Tropicana.

 

I still find it odd that a person that goes to Vegas regularly....

1. Pays for a rental at a casino AND a cab from the airport.
Exceptions: pressed for time, costs much less, and/or decided late.

2. Gets long-hauled over and over.

Unless you're getting a rental car from the airport terminal (which is a joke cuz it's not at the airport), there's no reason to go south to get the strip unless traffic is fecked on Swenson/Paradise/Tropicana/Koval/Flamingo etc.

It's the cost per mile vs. the low speed charge/stop charge.

 

1. In almost any case of a spot on the strip, it's at least 3 miles.

2. You still may encounter back-ups (although more likely in the north on I-15).

3. It depends on where you are going on the strip.

4. You will still have to go through lights in most cases.

5. There's no guarantee you will wait at every light going north vs. the tunnel.

 

To me, as in a four trip to vegas person, I do not sweat it anymore.

Starting on trip #2, before we get in the cab (or baggage), I specify the exact roads to where I want to go, and then SPELL IT OUT, if this is no good for you, I will walk to the next cab in line.

Never had anyone say no. I do this for ALL TAXI drives in Vegas. Not just the Airport Routine.

And they go as directed.

No sweat, no tears, they know when you specify the exact road names, no big deal.

Yet, I still have the TAXI AUT pre-programmed into my phone, AND WILL USE IT, or they can comp the total ride, period...

It's actually illegal for them to go the tunnel if you tell them to go north.

I'd have zero problem not paying if they go a different route. I remember one guy on here said he didn't pay them AT ALL.

 

i got long hauled once and when she did i told her what she was doing and i wasnt paying the fare,
she said pay what you want.

the tunnel can double the meter especialy if you get stuck in freeway trafic theres bumper to bumber and theres nothing you can do but watch the meter rate rise up.

they will tell your theres traffic on tropicana or special events thats theres excuse why they want you to use the tunnel and i tell them its okay i like traffic ill be happy to go my way

 

Las Vegas is such a melting pot your accent really doesn't matter. I've met locals who spoke very New Yawk, and Baaaaston, and y'all this and you-uns and we-uns.

Of course some locals speak perfect American Broadcast English.
