Lately there've been lots of reports about folks becoming ill in Vegas. After the issues at the Rio, I hope the health department has some advice for them.

These are only a few ways I'd suggest to possibly avoid it.

If the casino rulers read here, I'd suggest that they:

Provide a hand sanitizer on every type of dining room table, especially in buffets where every serving spoon gets picked up by everyone over and over ..

Use clean clothes with an antiseptic spray on all the slot buttons. (Ever watched the staff push chairs in and then wipe off the machines with yucky old grey rags?)

Train bar staff/CWs/food servers to wash hands again after picking up a round of dirty beer bottles, glasses, dishes, etc.

Train staff in the basics of sneezing or coughing. It's into the elbow, not your hands.

Encourage a kick in the butt to anyone that doesn't wash their hands before leaving the restroom. (Yeah, I know they can't do this :nono:)

Clean the air vents in hotel rooms.

If worse comes to worst, have room service for purchase of basic to advanced health kits ranging from band aids to cold medicine to Pepto Bismol to Imodium and Gravol, etc, right down to a call in medic. If I owned a Strip drug store, I'd have a delivery service for these type of items.

A little prevention from all of us is win/win. We can can keep having a healthy vacation and the casinos can keep winning our money.

    JMO.

Good point about the air vents in rooms Julie; I had trouble with the AC in my newly renovated room at Palms and when maintenance came up to change the filter, holy hell.....the dust in the unit was NOT to be believed. I asked for Housekeeping to vacuum it before he put the cover back on!

OMG this is my pet peeve. I work at a job where we all have to share keyboards and trackballs and every time I see someone sneeze into their hands I almost come out of my skin. Same with dealers. When the dealers do it I have to break out the little hand sanitizer I carry with me. I am no germaphobe, but eww.

This probably stems from the amount of times I have come home and gotten the "Vegas Crud" a few days later. I don't get sick very often and like to keep it that way.

There is no way casinos are buying sanitizers in that quantity, shits expensive as hell!

Source: I work in a store that sells the wipes, 180 wipes for $30...

My usual travel ritual is to go to a local Walmart or Walgreens before checking in and get a can of disinfectant spray and a small bottle of hand sanitizer in addition to a full size bar of soap. Only costs a few bucks for the generic store brands.

In the room first thing- spray down the toilet handle, faucet handles, door knobs, tv remote, phone, mini fridge, safe, and any other hard surface people touch.

Carry the small bottle of hand sanitizer with you and use it regularly.

When playing slots, avoid scratching your eyes, nose, etc.

Stop in the restroom for a good Howard Hughes style hand washing before eating.

Not entirely dismissing the OP's suggestions, but lets not act as if the Rio incident is a common occurrence like on cruise ships during the winter with Norovirus outbreaks. The fact of the matter is, even with all those suggestions, if a sick person shows up, that person is a germ spreading machine.

It really becomes your responsibility more than the casino's to not get sick.

    Don't show up sick
    If sick, stay in room
    wash hands often
    use hand sanitizer
    sneeze in arm, not hand
    don't shake hands with people
most cages offer individually wrapped hand wipes, carry a few and use them
Do not put hands in mouth, nose or eyes

You have to protect yourself, casinos are too big and too many to keep everything 100% clean and only you can keep your person and personal space clear of contamination

The gel is reasonably inexpensive, which is why you see dispensers all over the place (plus Gojo has a vested interested in getting their product in front of as many people as possible). The bigger problem is the human element; there was actually a fascinating article about Purell in the New Yorker a couple months ago, and how they actually changed the formulation of it rather than trying to train doctors to use it in a different way than they were.

I got a case of the Norovirus a year and a half ago at the Flamingo, but it seemed to be concentrated in the group event I was attending. Some reports said 40 of our people got sick. I was laid up in the room for about 36 hours. Foul. (Feels like food poisoning but you get a fever and it is usually transmitted through bad hand washing. It's caused by a virus, not a bacteria like salmonella or E-coli.) This is also common on cruise ships.

In amusement parks, on cruise ships and even at casinos and almost anywhere I see one of those Purell dispensers in public, I'll go out of my way to use it.

and I am far from a neat-freak, germaphobe, I just know that tons of people results in billions of germs

Retail price is completely irrelevant to the price point for an organisation with the buying power of CET / MGM. I would imagine they could get them for $1.50 to $2.00 a set, maximum.

This obsession Americans have with hand sanitizer is like the public health equivalent of the participation ribbon.

My strategy is to keep enough alcohol in my system at all times in Vegas to kill any invading germs

and studies done by most of the hand sanitizers companies and even the CDC have stated countless times that constant use of this product does more harm than good. Not only does hand sanitizer kill bad germs but also the good that your body needs to defend itself from infections. I know of 2 large hospitals that removed the hand sanitizer from patient rooms and from other patient care areas because it was replacing washing hands with soap and water. Intermittent use of hand sanitizer is OK but to use it like some do just makes matters worse.

"Norovirus, which is the common ‘stomach flu’ is notoriously resistant to most common disinfectants, including most hand sanitizers. This is in contrast to the third world not above, where the bacteria are killed. In this case, hand sanitizers still do not replace hand washing when fighting the spread of Norovirus".
"Also, the body’s best defense against disease agents is its own immune system. You keep the immune system primed by ALLOWING it access to disease agents. People who live in plastic bubbles never have a chance to develop immunities, so when disease agents inevitably get through the plastic wrap, the body has little defense. The same concept applies to antibiotics. The inevitable effect of the overuse of hand sanitizer or antibiotics is that we have bred stronger bacteria resistant to them".

I was playing vp at Orleans one time, having a fun conversation with guy next to me. This lady walks up to him and says, "the woman playing that machine before you took a poop in the bathroom and didn't wash her hands!" He just kind of glanced at her horrified face and said, " good to know." Just kept on playing. I'm hard to kill so I don't worry about the world much, but I am a hand washing fool.

    Agreed x 100!

Agreed x 1000! I am far, far from a germaphobe. The only times I wash my hands is after taking a piss or shit. I don't go out of my way to make sure things are clean before touching them.

I get sick once, MAYBE twice a year. Me getting sick involves a plugged up nose and a sore throat that lasts like 5 days. I've been this way for 15 years and I believe it's because of beer consumption and not giving a shit about germs.
