Has anyone ever had a dealer totally insist on coloring up?

I was playing green chip BJ at the Monte Carlo a few months ago, and run into a cold deck as soon as I sat down. I'm there less than 10 minutes, and after 4 consecutive dealer non-busts on stiff hands, I decide to bail. I say, "I'm moving to another table", and pick up my chips (about 25 green), and start to leave.

The dealer then tells me to give her my chips so she can color me up. I didn't want to go through the hassle of having her count out my chips just so that I can take some black chips to another table and trade them for green again. I say "No, I'm going", and she insists, and I refuse again, and she basically yells at me "GIVE ME YOUR CHIPS! I COLOR UP!"

I think it was totally out of line for her to demand a color up from me, since those are my chips, and I can take them where I please. This isn't roulette with special individual chips. I know casinos have their own reasons for wanting people to color up (like player rating, and record keeping), but it's not really my problem.

Next time, should I complain to somebody if a dealer is rude to me like this again? Could it be that the supervisors are making their dealers try to color people up as a policy?

Also, more than once I have had cage personnel seem peeved at me for not having fully colored up chips. This of course costs them their toke. It doesn't take that much more time to stack up a few chips, cut, and count them. Poker cages do it all the time.

I always thought it was because they didn't want to run out of the more popular chips 5/25/maybe 100s) and need a fill. They're probably never going to run out of $500 chips, but if people take the greens, they'll eventually run out.

My thoughts are there could be several reasons for this to have happened to you. Yes, it could be a "procedural thing" that the casino requires its dealers to do.

And yes, it could also be keeping the table you're leaving with an adequate amount of green chips, but I doubt that, as the pit boss can always call for more.

I think it is done more of an actual benefit to you, if you gave them your player's card to track your play.
    A. Easier for the dealer to report to the pit boss your win/loss when asked, regardless of how short of a time you spent at the table.
    B. Likewise, much easier for the dealer at your incoming table to know how much you're starting with if you've colored up, than if you come in with a stack of green chips.
Both are factors in computing your table play for your player's card.

    Just my thoughts.

Maybe the dealer has been given orders that she must color up. She might get in trouble and is that is why she is rude/firm with you. Ask the reason if it happens again.

It's normal. It's so they don't have to lose so many of a single color chip for no reason and having to get them refilled. Her manner may have been abrasive, but it sounds like yours was as well.

Typically they want to color you up to keep from getting fills and also to see exactly how much you've won. You DO NOT have to do it if you dont want to. A couple times I've deliberatly not done it when they asked just because I thought they were poor dealers with an attitude. If she yelled at you I would have smiled and said "thanks for playing" and walked away.

Even if it's policy to color up there is no excuse for a dealer to yell at you. She could easily explain why she wanted you to color up in a nice manner. If I don't want to color up I just get up and walk away, no delay, no time for a dialog about it.

I find this annoying too as sometimes I'm just moving a table or two. However, I'm a happy drunk so I comply but they can be insistent.

I was once annoyed at the opposite though. Went on a nice run one early morning and had several grand in front of me at the IP except their biggest chip in the tray was black. They couldn't color me up nor would they get me a tray or a cup of some sort. Great customer service.

Restocking chips is time consuming and makes the entire table wait.
Its no fun to stop the game when someone colors up especially when the table is going well but its much worse having to stop the game to restock chips.

Its almost as bad as when they replace the cards.

All dealers are trained to color up players when they leave the table. In fact, they are supposed to be almost "automatic" about it - just part of the standard operating procedure. With so much chaos and unpredictable behavior in a casino, there are certain procedural things that dealers much rigidly adhere to so as to maintain control and order at the table.

There are some things that are not negotiable - you will get yelled at (and eventually ejected from table) if you ignore the dealer warnings about touching the cards or touching your chips in play. Coloring up is NOT be one of the things you get yelled because it is not mandatory, but it is expected that the dealer will be at least "pushy" in trying to get players to color up.

    Why:

First and foremost, it is to avoid having to continually restock the table rack with more lower denomination chips. The less red and/or green chips in the tray, the harder the dealer will push for you to color up. Managing the chips in their rack is absolutely part of the dealer responsibility.

Second, it does help with tracking players - what they come in with and what they leave with. This is important, but the former reason is why they push so hard.

No, a junior member of the board simply asked why the dealer seemed overly aggressive in getting him to color up. Isn't that why we are all here - to ask and answer questions, share experiences, etc?

Nothing in the original post implied he lost his shit in any way.

I get what you're saying and I probably could have worded my post better. I think quotes like "these are my chips and I can take them where I please" and "I know casinos have their own reasons...but it's not my problem" just sound fairly petulant. We only have one side of the story, but it appears to me that both parties could have handled this situation a lot better.

Happens all the time. Normally if I'm leaving the table early with a lot of chips its due to the dealer being a dbag. I'll walk away like I never heard them if I don't feel like coloring up.

I think we all understand the purpose, but remember these casino employees are....well....people working at a casino for their living.

They aren't the "best and brightest".

It's probably outside their pay grade to realize that #1 they can't force you to color up, and #2 rudely insisting on it isn't worth it to the casino.

I'm all in agreeing with the original poster. Fuck 'em.

I agree with this 100%. I think this would have been a much better way for the OP to handle the situation.

    3 points

1 - they are trained to ask for all the reasons mentioned.

2 - you can ignore them, refuse(just shake your head and say no thanks), or tell them your switching tables, etc.

3 - there is no reason for the dealer or player to get rude about it.

There are two main reasons for this. The first reason has already been touched on... They don't want you leaving the table with 25 greens, and they have to have a restock done on to fill the greens, when they could have just given you 6 blacks and a green. It takes about 20 seconds, it's not a big deal.

Secondly, it's also so that you don't overfill the next tables racks. Let's say you took your 25 greens to the next table that had just opened, and proceed to dump it all. Let's assume the table just opened with a full rack. Now they have to try to squeeze in your 25 green chips. Now they have to do another transaction and have chips removed.

A table can go a long time without filling if people just color up when they leave. It takes 20 seconds, and it's a hell of a lot easier to carry 6 chips than 25. Add to that, that it takes 4-5 minutes for a fill, which makes players wait after you leave. At the end of the day it sounds like it wasn't handled well on either end, but like some have said, the dealer was probably under strict orders to color you up and could get yelled at for you running off with the chips.

I am guilty of not coloring up - I 'rat-hole' a pocket full of greens for money management purposes. Between me and my friend, we have several hundred in our pockets.

They have had to get a re-fill for greens, and I know it has to do with our pocket chips - we are not trying to get a better rating - we know all the dealers and pit bosses well, just a way of insuring that we have some 'left-overs' for the next session. It is part of a surprise when you leave - just how much is put in the pockets (I don't want to know until I put it in the safe that night).

After many days of playing - we head to the cashier with over a grand of greens - they know exactly what happened!!! (although over a period of 4 days they would understand)

I'm answering this as I am a dealer at a casino and use to do security at the same casino.

First you say it's not your problem, that tells a lot about what type of player you are.

Nothing worse than a player coming to your table with a stack or two of any color chops, especially if you just had a fill. Nowhere to put them when a player loses creates a security issue for the dealer until a credit can be ordered and competed and it's not a fun issue to have, I know not your issue.

Taking a stack or two also can make it to where a fill must be ordered. It sounds easy and quick but if I have a full table, nearly all of my greens are gone, if someone is only playing 25 a time I have to pay in red if I run out of green, can't convert to black unless playing 50. Then when I run out of reds and greens we are looking at smaller denomination chips which would go quicker. Point is if I have a hot table and run out before a fill arrives it's not a good thing (and has happened) and also may make it so if someone loses and leaves I may not have the chips to cover a new but in.

So I'm running low and my floor orders a fill for me , awesome it will only take a couple minutes to get there but it's not just a busy night at the tables but also for whatever reason security Is busy as well. For those that do not know, security delivers the fills and performs the credits. Security is notified of the full, they are on higher priority issues and as soon as available they go to the bank to pick up the fill, BUT there are 10 fills and mine just happens to be the last one ordered and typically they go out in order of when they were requested. So in that time 3 people refuses to color up, leave and a few more come to buy in, I run out of x color chip which is what my players want to play. They move to another table and I'm standing dead and a dead table makes no tips , I don't make tips I don't make money. Notice I'm not concerned about the ratings or casino money but I want players so I make money (not really an issue at my casino since we pool our toke).

Iv had guys refuse to color up and it's annoying and rude. Players expect us to be respectful and wish them luck to win all the while verbally abusing me and my fellow coworkers and to top it off their refusing a color up just makes the job a bit harder for multiple people, it's things like this is why so many dealers are not as pleasant as you would like. Not saying all players are like this but a majority are , we stay at the job because we do have the players that makes it fun plus there are not a lot of jobs that pay as well when you factor in tokes.

Curious how you would like it if a majority of your customers came to your place of employment, and because they are having a bad day calling you everything under the sun, bad mouthing your mother, oh and all are demanding this or that, im sure after awhile you would not smile and be inviting. Dealers are expected to deal with that stuff daily, we know that going into the job and most of us have thick skin. Point is you don't want someone making your job harder I why do you think it's fine to make others harder than need be?
