Aug. 27, downtown Las Vegas (either The California or Main Street Station, can't remember which)... see attached picture...

MegaBucks slot machine. $11.5 million jackpot at the time. All three "MegaBucks" symbols were visible... but, of course, the machine requires all three to be exactly on the PAY LINE.

I can only dream what life would be like today if they HAD matched up on the PAY LINE...

    Maybe next trip. :)

Has anyone else come oh-so-close to the magical payout, whether that be machines, or sports bets, or what-not...? Please do share...!

I know how you feel...in March of 2012, when the Mega Millions lottery jackpot soared past a record half a billion dollars, when I checked the winning numbers the next morning I found that I had every single number EXCEPT ONE!!!!

I had four out of five numbers and the Mega ball, so I ended up winning $10,000. If I had five numbers and no Mega ball, it would have been a million! Still, $10,000 is better than nothing at all...

That's reaching, 2of3 are barely visible, but man would that have been nice. True story, Megabucks reached like 20Mil back in 2003. Was going for 24 hours with other guys for all night poker at Stardust/Mandalay. Was going to put $100 in my lucky machine. Well, it hit that night at Stardust at about the time I would have been there but I was a witness to a rollover fatality at Blue Diamond. I guess I won with my life that night, but still would have been nice.

Actually, there was a thread about "near misses" a few weeks ago. Apparently part of the slots programming is to create near misses. Makes sense if you think about how the gambling brain works.

yep and the one the OP posted isn't even really "close". close is when you hit the first 2 and the third one spins there extra long and lands one spot off. that's the worst and, yes, it's programmed to do that just to make you think it's so close to hitting.

Dean if you haven't already you should listen to the second half of this NPR podcast. I think you'll enjoy it. Here's the transcript: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/466/transcript

The relevant stuff is in Act 2. They hit on the near-misses and how neuroscientists have discovered that pathological gamblers brains tend respond to near-misses similar to how they respond to wins. Non-pathological gamblers brains respond to them similar to how they respond to losses.

Really all of Act 2 is fascinating reading/listening. It focuses on a lawsuit a destroyed gambler brought upon Caesars and it's really eye opening to hear some of the backstory. It seems like a silly lawsuit at first but there is definitely some nuance.

I haven't had any really big "oh so close" moments but have had a couple smaller ones...

I don't play roulette often but every once in awhile I like to do a hit and run.

I was at The Cosmo and had just took a nice beating from craps and Spanish 21...walked up to the roulette table and plunked down $300 on 17 and stood there and watched the damn ball drop into the 17 slot...bounce out...roll BACK IN and then finally squirm right back out.

    Unreal.

A few years ago I headed out to Vegas on business and the middle seat was empty on the flight out. Idle chit chat with the guy while we were taxing for takeoff and he pulls out every gambling/betting handicapping magazine they sell. So we talk for awhile after we hit the air and he informs me that he doesn't "gamble" and he only bets college football. He picks 50 teams every summer and studies them until he knows everything about everything and comes out to Vegas every other week to make money on the side.

At this point I really want to be a smart ass, but during the conversation we find out that his good friend is a patient of mine and he went to law school with my neighbor. So I am polite and just tell him that when I wake up from nap I want a 10 team parlay to bet my entire bankroll on and I will not settle for any minor league BS.

After a nice 3.5 hr nap, I wake up with him handing me his 10 team parlay card, but he is only locking 6 teams. I tell him I am banking my entire roll on this bet. It's go big or go home!!!!!

I chickened out or came to my senses and threw a $100 on the 10 team parlay. Well, sitting through class for 8 hours became torture as 1 team, then 2, then 3, then 4, and so on and so on kept winnning. I am completely thinking of what I am going to do with my winnings and paying zero attention to the lecture who I paid the amount of a used midsized car to further my education. At a break the rest of the class, which is about 12-15 guys, plus the lecturer knows my situation and as almost of us are degenerates, everything becomes what my bet is doing and not so much on the content of root canals!!!

Well, after class, I was 7-7 and flew back to the strip. The institution is out in Summerlin and the drive down the Parkway is always jammed with cops. The norm in Detroit during rush hour is 80 mph, but I never speed on that damn Parkway. I swear it took 3 hours to get back to the strip, really was 20 minutes or so and of course the piece of shit rental did not have any sports stations or XM or Sirus or anything to feed my need for instantaneous updates!!!!

I hit the sports book just in time to see I hit 9-9 and my last game is winning at halftime. I have to preface that I did my undergrad at Michigan State and have a hatred with some schools and I have to root for an enemy, Ohio State. On one hand OSU losing helps my team try to go to the Rose Bowl for the first time in forever, but on the other hand, OSU winning and covering the 3 pts at a lonely team would give me a lottery 10-10 parlay!!!!!

Lets not kid ourselves, I was rooting for OSU all the way. Rose Bowls will come and go. 10 team parlays are a White Whale!!!

All I have to say is the I hate OSU even more after them taking the second half off. Not only did they not cover, they lost outright. BASTARDS!!!!!!! It was a slow agonizing defeat. I felt like going home right then and there, no class tomorrow, no more gambling for a few days after the class, no more fun, nothing!!!!

I am not sure who was more disappointed. me or the guys in my class??

I am not bitter at all that OSU lost to Purdue 23-26 in OT!!!!!

That is my brush with hitting the lottery.
