    The moon landings were staged!

Pretty wild way to see "us." And the really wild stuff way out there ...

Probably something I should know...but I dont...how do they know how far away the images the Hubble takes are? 110 million light years? how do they know that

Uh, they figured it out on their slide rules.:evillaugh
    I have no clue.

Just to date myself, I still have two slide rules laying around somewhere.

Hard as it is to believe, the space program was built by engineers figuring out all those calculations on slide rules. No calculators back then.
I'm a geek but this might interest you for 20 seconds at least.

    BOOKMARKED!!!

Slide rules must have been crazy expensive being that they require so much precision to be accurate...

I don't remember that was 40+ years ago, but it was required for many of the math courses, so iirc since so many students needed them, there was competition and the prices were reasonable for the times.

Lol, I think I paid $40 for my first basic, non scientific, calculator.

I still have my trusty K&E slide rule. I was darn good using it too; almost so fast I caught it on fire a few times, and no batteries required!

I know mine are in a box of crap in the house somewhere, but I guarantee if I tried to use it today, I'd have no clue.

Maybe I'll wait 10 more years and then put them on eBay as antiques. :wink2:

I changed "A&E" from my earlier post to "K&E". (Guess I've been watching too much "Breaking Bad!" Anyway, I just dug up my ancient slide rule in its original case that has a price sticker of $22. That was back in 1969!

I'm not surprised you haven't seen one. Aren't you in your 20s or 30s? I'm a 53 year old engineer and I never used them. When I was 7 or 8 years old, my Dad (also an engineer) showed me the slide rule and tried to explain to me how it worked. My young brain was more focused on Barbies at that time :). By college I used an HP programmable calculator - gotta love that RPN!

I'm glad you asked this. For some reason I just thought it had to do with the Doppler effect and I started writing that until it hit me that would only work for measuring speed. So I looked it up and its pretty fascinating. Here's a good easy to understand summary:

    http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/virtualmuseum/ita/06_3.shtml

Basically its based on the magnitude of the star's brightness relative to a fixed standard. They can calculate what its absolute brightness is from its color spectrum. From there they can calculate how far away it would have to be for it to have "dimmed" to its level of apparent brightness that we see from earth. That's the gist of it, but there are other methods too.

LOL such a nerd. I still use my 12C pretty often and have always kept it on RPN. I used to have trouble sometimes using normal algebraic mode on my iphone until I got used to it again.
