We have stayed downtown (specifically the Plaza) the last 2 years for March Madness. We like it because of the good VP paytables downtown, the proximity of all the casinos, lower table limits, not as crowded sports books, Fremont Street, MSS brews, etc.

Anyway, I might have to move to the Gold Coast for March Madness 2014 because some of the guys will probably get comped rooms at the Rio. And they will probably want to stay there. Unfortunately I won't be comped and will look to stay at the Gold Coast since the rooms are cheaper.

Any comments on whether the Gold Coast would be a good home base for March Madness. I know they and the Palms have full pay VP. What about low limits BJ and craps?

    How is their sports book?

As far as the Sportsbook,it's not very comfortable...No big screens like the Rio and Palms and the chairs off the racebook area are school-desk style..But there is a long bar in the back that I love.(I am there every NFL Sunday opener)..Open spots at the bar at 10AM and tables and tv's overhead..All depend if you want the roudiness the Rio will have or more relaxed..
I've stayed at the GC many times, never a bad hotel room experience. Will be there this Sunday before heading to the Rio for the week actually.

Now the low-limit BJ and craps sound good-They are not if you are not Asian..I 86'd myself from playing there even Roulette..Can't explain it but one time I'm at a $5 BJ table and losing and playing a $1 on the side for the dealer..who was being trained by another Asian..After I lost hand after hand and get no "Thanks for the try" at least,I spoke up to the young one and gave them my tip on how to possibly make more tips..The Dealer trainer gave me a look like GTFO..
And this if after a few sessions over the years..For some reason I cannot get a winning session there at BJ or craps, maybe a couple at roulette that is that.
Bartenders at all the bars will give you all the drinks you need as long as you keep tip dollars in the glass but watch the older lady 'tender who rotates the bars on breaks who's an original GC employee who goes by the book as far as pouring, checks to see if you are playing max coins etc..She is a trip!
The VP is much better than the Rio in my sessions of bartop, had my only Royal there a couple years ago same back bar.
Hope any of this info helps !

Quick side question....how long is the walk from Rio to GC? I'll be staying at Rio this December and plan on wandering over to GC during the afternoons for some VP.

Also to the OP, if some of your buddies are going to be comped at Rio, have them get in touch with a host or VIP services to see what kind of "friends and family" rate they qualify for. Depending on their level of play, they may be able to get you a free room, or one at a heavily discounted rate.

From the buffet side exit of Rio to the Gold Coast valet entrance it's about 5 minutes if you don't go to the end of the street and use the crosswalk. With the crosswalk, it's more like 10.

I was at Gold Coast about 3 years ago for March Maddness. They had a large banquet room set up with large screen TV's, betting stations, food and drink. It was not crowded at all and getting a good seat was a breeze. I would call and ask if they still are doing it as I said this was 3 years ago.

Thanks for all the info. I will play it by ear. My preference is to stay downtown. But it sounds like Gold Coast is a possibility.

I've stayed at the GC many times and undoubtedly will again. Yes, it attracts lots of Asians (I am not) and plenty of locals, but so what? There are usually more than a few $5 BJ tables open (3/2 with DDAS) and an abundance of minibac tables. The rooms have recently been remodeled and are quite nice. (I got my Lucky Ladies with dealer BJ there last Nov, which didn't hurt my positive feelings either.) It's a good place to stay and play!

Both Gold Coast & Orleans have March Madness party rooms each year. Both places have multiple VP bars w/ multiple TVs, but no real sportsbook seating area except for horse players. The closest would probably be the Mardi Gras bar "patio" area in the Orleans. You can take the free shuttle back & forth, and also to the Strip if you prefer.

Sounds like a great place to be based for the tourney.
