the simple answer is ticket the minors for a LARGE amount of money AND hold them in a cell until convicted AND have them on a work detail as part of the punishment

money alone is no longer a deterrent for most these days especially yoof, utes, and chilwren, but what is a major deterrent is time and work....most of the trash down there lives at home I am sure and their parent(s) (questionable on the S) most likely barely work and have barely worked for most of the lives of their kids and their kids have little or no living expenses or overhead....they have a part time job that they supplement with petty theft and other crimes for quick cash and a trip to court for a MIP citation and a fine is nothing to them as far as a real deterrent

but if they were out there right on those same streets where they are drinking and fighting the next few days having to get a full bag of trash and having to have their designated area spotless you would most likely never hear hair or hide of them again after the first few times they had to serve that punishment......and yes of course go ahead and do it for the wealthy out of towners from LA as well......you drink under age and fight at any age and you can look forward to a large fine AND carrying a bag of street refuse until your area is SPOTLESS as verified by the person watching over you then you can scrub some graffiti and clean up some urine and puke while you are at it

slap some ankle monitors on them and get them out there in the hot sun working their dumb asses off....slap a tax on 4loko, boones farm, wild irish rose, 40s and all the other swill they consume and let the fines cover the rest of the cost and get downtown Vegas cleaned up and get a bunch of over energized under worked losers too tired to be out later that night drinking and fighting some more or too broke

I was there the 4th with 3 concert stages setup all throughout downtown and didnt witness a single fight. Admittedly I didnt stand around people watching too long because it was too damn crowded.

Theres also little stopping these kids showing up with a six pack of 4 loco in their backpacks ahead of time. I think pointing the finger at the liquor stores is a little unjust.

Its not like they cant send underage kids/overly drunk people inside those liquor stores and then issue out citations if they really think thats the root cause of the problem.

I have never seen a fight downtown nor do i see young people drinking. You might see the younger looking guy on the outskirts of the crowd but he isnt hurting anything.

I can only think the reason for this guys wanting less booze sales is that they liquor stores dont pay their monthly dues to the fse. If they did he would be all for more sales.

I also have never seen a fight or underage drinking, that I could tell anyway. But the article sites a shooting a month ago in front of the D and a stabbing just two days ago.

Not something I would be concerned with, but maybe things are changing. Or, like in any major city, when the heat goes up, tempers flare?

I've seen a few fights downtown. But all have been between cowboys during the NFR.

I would think it's the hotels that are the biggest opponents to liquor stores. They want to be the primary source for alcohol in the area. It's where they make good money, whether you're playing and drinking or paying and drinking.

But I have seen underage drinking and they do have to police the area more for it and that costs money to the hotels and businesses along FSE. However, like FTX said, there's little that can be done if youths are bringing the booze with them. I am for very stiff fines and penalties to the liquor distributors who get caught selling to underage patrons.

Even though downtown seems to be busier each trip we make, I have not seen any increase in violence thankfully. People will always drink and some to excess in Vegas. I personally think that the security and/or police presence was sufficient in May. Guess we will see in a couple weeks.

i went to downtown only twice and both times saw fights. one time i took a video of a fight. i like downtown but it is filled with too many bums and gangsters and trailer trash that create problems for all the decent people.if they cleaned up downtown of those types of people more people would visit.

Wow, I guess I must be one lucky SOB. I've been going to Vegas for 40 years and the last 15 we have stayed exclusively downtown. That's about 75 downtown stays and works out to about ~300 nights. I've never seen a fight on Fremont.

    I'm with Joe.

    Many nights downtown.

Admittedly, it's hanging in there smiling with the Hawaiians at MSS & Cal.

But, I always hang around the FSE each night. And I've spent nights at Four Queens & Golden Gate.
Luckily, I have not been near any altercations.

Now, if those dadgum "moochers" would just leave me alone! Haha!

In Honolulu they have a task force with liquor commissioners and volunteer minors going around to make sure that stores and bars don't sell to minors. first offense is $500 with it going up for each infraction within a certain period of time. Many bars now tell the employees that they will be responsible for paying the fine but we still see many bars and stores that get caught selling liquor to minors.

I have seen fights downtown, mostly during the times that they have bands on the stages. when liquor flows it's not only minors that are causing the fights though. But as others have mentioned, it's being at the wrong place at the wrong time as many of these fights last only a few seconds or minutes and the culprits quickly disperse into the crowd.

Hey now!! Let's not tax Boones!!

I don't think it’s fair to try and categorize the underage drinkers...I'm sure some come from broken homes but I'm sure some come from very well off families. So categorizing them as "trash" is just ignorant...

Its also hard to set harsh penalties for MIPs and MICs...would you punish a 20 year old the same you would a 16 year old for drinking? what if that 20 year old just got back from a tour in Iraq? Do you base it on level of intoxication? what they are drinking?

A lot of times the worst punishment is calling the parents and letting them deal with it...other times a written citation requiring a court appearance in addition is best since the parents will have to accompany the minor in court which just pisses the parents off even more.

For all the people that get violent when they drink there are equal amounts that get mellow and relax. So reduce the alcohol and you don’t really reduce the violence IMHO

When I was a young buck, we had a liquor store we'd always go to. The guy would charge us 2-3x the amount but he was a solid source of booze. This lasted up until he got ticketed for selling to a minor. At which point he realized that making a few extra bucks wasnt worth losing his liquor license.

I think hitting a person in their pocketbook is the best chance you have of teaching them a lesson. Issue out a bunch of citations to minors and any liquor stores that dont follow the rules. Set up cameras where the stages are and the problem with solve itself.

you will notice I clearly mentioned tossing in the well to do out of town visitors that are violating the law as well and when you are falling down drunk and brawling in public you are trash at any income level or socioeconomic status....paris hilton and the kartrashians are as trashy as anything that is trash

and personally I remember when you could buy 3.2 beer in Louisiana at 16 and when the drinking age was 18 and states had states rights to set those types of rules and the federal government did not abuse their power by withholding federal highway funds for states exercising their constitutionally afforded rights....so I personally feel that a drinking age should be very low and 18 is about the highest it should be.....I also remember a time when police had discretion to look at someone that was 17 or 20 or whatever age calmly drinking a beer and tell them to not do that in front of them or don't make it so obvious or to pour it out and be on their way and those that were stupid drunk or brawling were subjected to the fullest extent of the law.....then those that were not of means or that had some type of physical feature they could blame for them being "singled out" for their law breaking VS others that might not have that same factor started to complain loudly and the law's response was to crack down harder on everyone VS easing up on some.......especially since those that often used that excuse were not calmly having a beer they were instead fighting and brawling and groping girls and flashing gang signs and looking for trouble

and as for the parents having to show up in court again good luck with that...that is part of the issue the courts have made it into a financial matter and not a waste of time and effort matter and the results in the past of parents having to show up was parents loudly complaining that their "little angel" was targeted for some reason other than their transgressions and why are others not targeted that are "doing the same" even though the others were the ones actually calmly drinking a beer

so if it was up to me the alcohol factor for those from 18-20 or even 16-20 for beer would be removed from the equation and the focus would be on the trashy behavior of brawling, groping, petty theft, vandalism, falling over drunk and general scumbag behavior and it would be punished without regard for wealth or social status and the punishment would be physical labor picking up trash, mowing weeds, scrubbing graffiti, scooping up puke and washing down urine and it would be DAYS of that per violation increasing in duration for each one

and I think it is pretty much a proven statistic that those that come from broken homes and homes where the parents are not even responsible enough to produce enough income to feed their family equals an increase in poor grades and poor behaviors by the children in those homes......or at least that is what is ALWAYS said when it is pointed out that particular areas are total and complete crime filled crap with terrible schools and empty store fronts......it is "said" because it is an area with people that do not have the same financial means (opportunity) as those in more affluent areas......how or why that is well that is hotly debated.....again I pointed out that well to do kids can do things bad especially like drinking and brawling or even hard core drug use, but when was the last time you heard about the gangs of 90201 or long island

reading the article linked and others linked from it it seemed pretty clear to me that the LV police were letting things slide as far as 18-20yos drinking especially coming in and out of the clubs or just minding their own business.....then the same "element" that always turns every place to shit started to show up, loiter around drinking swill and generally just looking for trouble and they are ruining it for everyone else like they always do...that does not mean it is exclusively them, but again the kids from 90201 and the trust fund kiddos are not coming to Vegas at 18-20 to stand around on the damn street drinking piss beer from right out of the 30 pack box...and yes some of them might get drunk and fight....and that is when their Vegas vacation gets an extension for 3-4 days of trash detail and urine detail and puke detail along with a fat ass fine to cover the cost of administering that just like for everyone else

it is just like shopping malls that turn to crap....when is the last time you saw people with arms full of Gucci bags and Armani bags suddenly just start having a wild fight in the mall.....well pretty much never that is almost exclusively the domain of those that go to the mall to hang out and bump into people and try and get in a fight or steal or generally turn the place into a declining shit fest...and while the fact that those that show up to the mall to generally stand around and scream and shout and block the entrances and make the place unpleasant for other shoppers might have 200 dollar shoes on and 300 dollar phones and that says they are not "poor"......if you looked at where they nest you would see they are as poor and trashy as anyone especially in their "ways" and more than likely they did not get the money to have those shoes and electronics through hard work
