For me, however they are slid to me, I make a pair out of them before I throw, except on the come-out because I don't want a hardway to come up on the come-out.

I actually line up a 7. 3/4 on top. I figure what are the chances of them staying that way.

    oh ... I don't know, maybe 1 in 6.

I only play the dark side when I shoot and I tell everyone not to bet on me beforehand. but they never listen ...

On my come out roll I just fling them.
After the point I set the Flying V.
Supposedly that lets 7's happen the least.
    Don't know if it's true, don't care. It's what I do.

I'll usually set the dice to the point, but honestly, 9 times out of 10 the stick will send them over to me like that. My shooting ritual is more important to me.

    Dice Setting

RPM Canes may be talking about the controversial method of setting the dice before a roll to determine the outcome.

Some believe it can be done. The general consensus among the vast majority is that it is impossible.

Casinos allow it generally except amateur dice setters take too long to set the dice and it slows down the game, so some casinos frown on the practice generally for this reason.

Since you must toss the dice and they must bounce off the far wall or the box man or pit will call a "No roll", this makes it a dubious proposition at best.

There has been a lot of discussion on this and other boards, and you can join and pay for dice setting lessons and to be a member of the dice setting cult.

I've been in casinos where a group of them came in and each set the dice with intensity and then tossed them with fervor only to crap out like everyone else eventually does. I think they were taking lessons.

But then I've seen others win. Who Knows? They say it takes a mountain of time and practice to get it right and then it's still not a proven strategy by any means.

So, how do you set the dice? I don't. But if I see an experienced dice setter shooting I'll usually bet with him.

To come up seven, yes. But to come up 3/4, the odds are a little longer :poke:

I'm not superstitious. However they come to me, I pick them up, rattle them in my hand once or twice, and toss 'em. Once they hit the far wall, the outcome is effectively randomized. The starting configuration in one's hand is utterly irrelevant.

I roll them around on the table while under my hand, pick 'em up & toss 'em down the length of the table. I do try to hit the back wall at a left or right angle so that they rebound to the left or right, away from the box-man (as opposed to bouncing straight back).
I've found that this results in almost zero "no-rolls" occurring when I'm shooting.

Never give it a thought! When they are passed over, I just shoot and hit the back wall.

I'm not on the Golden Arm wall of fame at the Cal, but I have had some decent rolls, just not enough.

I will add, one thing that drives me nuts is when a shooter takes FOREVER to set the dice, then scoops them up in his or her hand and shakes them around before throwing. Ummm, why set them in the first place? :faint:

For anyone who thinks dice setting works, find anyone alive who makes their living playing craps. If it was possible, someone would be doing it.

I have no idea where this comes from but I stack them then sort of grab them backhand. I shake them once, sometimes twice and just aim for the back wall. I know that superstitions mean nothing but also believe in not jinxing things (part of my split personality I guess).

I like to watch them roll a bit before they land. I think it adds to the excitement. I always thought they were supposed to roll before hitting the wall. Maybe because I'm old. It seems some people try to toss them lightly so they barely hit the wall. I've seen some people get a "no roll" that way when they miss the wall. When they do that more than once it gets very annoying.

I don't believe they can be easily set for an outcome, but think everyone should be allowed to do what they want IF it is not holding up the game.

The less time I'm touching the dice the better. I just grab em and throw em in one quick forward motion. Usually a 7 out on the second roll. I should switch to Darkside when I'm rolling like Shifter.

If there are actually people doing it, I bet they're not teaching seminars or writing books

    Exactly, Seviay.

I don't mind people setting. A lot of times I want to be at the table for a certain number of hours, so having someone take time to set the dice is decreasing my overall house advantage during that time period, so it's helping me out.

When I'm stalling, I set two threes on top of the dice, with the lines parallel to each other. I figure it does two things. It takes time, and it makes people think that I care. And since some people actually do care, it doesn't cost me anything to make them happy.

Dice setting and pre-throw rituals are one of the charming aspects of the game. I absolutely believe it has no impact. Results are random no matter what you do. But I love the superstitions of the game. ANd I love seeing how different people approach the throw.

So yes, I have a ritual - or a couple of them. I will take the dice, set them on the "flying V", rotate them three times around my pass line bet and then try to have them just kiss off the back wall. I will try to duplicate the ritual on every.

BUT....if I seven out quickly, I may change the next time. I will just pick up the dice with one hand however they come to me and, in one motion, throw a pretty high arc and send them down the table.

If there are a bunch of cold shooters in a row, I will change up the rhythm. If the previous cold shoooters were all "setters" I will "chuck and duck". If a couple of cold shooters are just throwers, I will slow down the game a bit by doing my setting routine.

If I am at a totally empty table and I am the only one playing, sometimes I will change things up by taking them and rolling them hard right down the table....almost like they are sliding, but they usually tumble. I only do this if there are no chips down the other end or in the middle - it can get pretty messy if there are and the crew would get pretty pissed off.

One thing is a constant - if I am on a roll I try to repeat the exact same motion over and over again. Again, superstition...but I have seen hot shooters do something different one time and immediately seven out. Totally illogical I know. Just like the dice going off the table "causes" the next nmber to be a seven. No basis in reality. Right?

    ....right???

You could indeed develop the equations of motion for the dice during flight, when they hit the back wall, and when they bounce around...there would be three spacial equations and 3 rotational equations

You could develop a method that would always get you what you want based on the EOM...however it would be difficult to replicate results since there are too many variable that you would need to keep constant, such as the release angle and velocity, spin imparted on the dice during release, the contact angle with the alligator wall, and so on and so forth.

So it’s not impossible per se…but extremely difficult

I also take great care not to hit any stacks of chips. It seems like it always causes The Number with No Name to come up!
