I got an invitation to a Craps tourney and I'm just curious how that even works. I've done slot tournaments and those are really easy to understand (sit at a machine three times throughout the tournament, hit the button, add your scores).

But what about craps? Do they have a set number of times each shooter gets to shoot the dice before they call it a session, or what? I'm assuming they probably give you a small stack of promotional chips at each session and you just see how much you have at the end to determine your "score"?

If anyone has done one, can you please give me a quick bare bones summary?

Time limit for the session. Game & dice move as normal. When the session is up, X number of people move to the 2nd round which is determined by chip count. It varies by tournament as to how many move on, but it is usually two sessions, maybe over two days.

Money management is the key and also keeping an eye on the other players chip count when the clock is winding down. Mine was at The Cal, so who knows how many rule variations each casino might have.

Good luck! I stunk my first time.

keep a careful eye as to what the other players are betting on, and bet the opposite. Only way to accumulate enough chips to move on is to bet the opposite of the majority of players. This could mean betting the dark side, betting heavy on hardways, always putting a chip on boxcars in case it hits, etc. If everyone plays the same, or normal, then you can't separate yourself from the field. Have to take chances to get a chip lead to move on to the next round. It is more of a do or die type betting plan.

Thanks! I was kind of thinking this too, and that makes a lot of sense.
And I usually go a number of longshots all the time anyway . . . hardways, Yo bets, Hi-Lo, etc.

Thanks! I've had horrible luck at Craps for about 5 years now, so I won't feel too bad either way, haha! I like what you noted about keeping watch on others' chip count too. Very helpful stuff from you and BJ. Thanks.

Money management is key...as previously mentioned, you might start off playing/betting as you are accustomed, but as the play progresses, you might need to get creative....either betting more or sometimes betting less...if you are behind, think about putting all your remaining chips on the field bets....if you are lucky, every roll will be a decision in your favor...

Good point. As the final round tally will determine advancement, pulling ahead towards the end with some HAIL MARY bets may well prove necessary.

Here is one little craps tournament tidbit.

At those times when you feel like you are definitely behind what it will take to advance to the next round with only a short time left in the round, you sometimes run into a problem of making a big bet that you need to win in order to advance and the round ends before you reach a decision on that big bet. Without the big bet win, you don't advance. If you are in a situation where you need to increase your bankroll Right Now, a decent strategy is to put as much of your bankroll as you can (many tournys have betting max limits) on the field. While all the pass/don't pass and place bets are dependent upon certain numbers being hit, the field bet is a one-roll bet. If you can hit that bet a few times in a row with big bets, you can make up almost any deficit in a short while. Of course you stand a chance of going broke but that is a chance you have to take in a tournament anyway, especially if you are behind late in a round.

    Timed or Rolls

Are most tournaments rounds timed or do they go on for "X" amount of rolls?

You need to have a players card, and give a joint some play. It's that simple. Then the invitations come in.

Also, some places give you your own "page' on their website, where you can modify your likes and dislikes. Set craps as one of your likes.

I play mostly craps at all the Boyd properties and sure would wish I'd get an invitation. On the Bconnected site I listed craps as my preference but I have yet to be invited.

Funny, slots are my least as far as play, but I get invited to slot tournaments all the time. Go figure.:rolleyes2:

I'd honestly never even heard of a Craps Tournament until I got this invitation. I got the invitation from Tropicana who has sent me quite a few invitations lately (BJ, Slots, Craps).

As for my play level . . . not all that much. The last few times I've played there (and yes, it is critical that you register a player's card to have your play flagged properly) I probably spent a few hours playing slots and $25 Blackjack. I lost a grand over a few days weekend.

Tropicana is pretty easy to get invites and rooms from. Just get a card and drop a few hundred bucks in one night or just spend a few hours with mediocre play (i.e. $25 blackjack) and you're pretty much in solid.

Slot tourneys are much more common. I get slot invites all the time and I mostly play craps.

Most of the ones I have played in were timed instead of X amount of rolls. That is how you can get caught with those big bets you absolutely need to win to advance turning in to a "no decision" bet when the clock runs out.

With everyone's notes on the topic, it seems one of the more foolish things to do (especially as the clock winds down) would be large or multiple COME bets or large line bets on the come-out roll. Since those will be tied up until a specific number hits, it would be better to stick to PLACE bets for the numbers. Then you can always take them down.

This will be an interesting event. I'll do a report the best I can afterwards. The tourney is in later June, so I've got some time to strategize, haha!
