    Hi,

At my home casino, if you a re playing blackjack and you want to get up to use the facilities, or just take a breather, you just get up and walk away, leaving your chips and drink right at your spot. It lets the dealer know you are coming back and not to give away your seat.

I did this at the Mirage and got the strangest reaction from the dealer and the player at the table. "Where did you go?" "You left your chips at the table". "Someone could run off with them." I was confused. In Vegas, should I have picked them up and taken them with me to the washroom? Isnt this why there is a pitboss/dealer and hundreds of cameras? If someone wanted to grab my chips and run, me sitting there drinking and in relaxed holiday mode isnt going to stop them, i couldn't catch them myself, lol.

    What do you guys do?

    Thanks

I don't think it's ever smart to "just get up and walk away". I think it's far better to let the dealer know what your plan is... how are they supposed to know what's going on if you don't?

I would have been tempted to sit down and pretend I was your 'brother'. Place some large bets, lose, get pissed, pocket the rest, say "He told me I would just lose all his winnings!" and leave :)

Nah, Id never do that. But that's pretty balsy on your part. Glad it worked out for you. Im going to Vegas in 2 weeks exactly, and I can tell you right now, my chips and cash will never be out of my sight unless under lock and key. Vegas is famous for pickpocketeers, Im sure one of them wouldn't mind making away with a tray full of chips either.

so if your going for a leak, you take all your chips with you and have them hold your seat?

I guess it might be a Canadian thing to be much more trusting of the immense security and the goodwill of the other people!!

I always leave my chips. But I do let the dealer know. I've done it 100s of times. No one has ever thought it was odd - at least they've never mentioned that they thought it was odd - and I've never had anything stolen. YMMV of course.

I also don't think I've ever seen anyone else take their chips with them.

I always ask the dealer to put a marker on my spot so that he knows I will be returning shortly. I may take my higher denomination chips with me but I just about always leave the nickels.

I should add, I was sitting with nickles, about $60-80 total is all!

Ahh, that makes a difference haha. I generally have thousands. I still want to say that Id walk away and take the chips with me, but I have never really faced your dilemma.

i generally play higher end places (wynn/encore/bellagio) but i've never had anyone question my leaving chips on the table. same here locally at mohegan sun / foxwoods. if i have any "big" chips i would prob. put them in my pocket though..

I leave my stuff (chips, drink, etc) at the table all the time - but I always let the dealer know before I walk away. I also give a general time frame - "be back in 5" or "i'll be 15 or 20 minutes"...

If I am in high limit area and have a really good stack, they will sometimes place one of those clear boxes over my chips. Kind of cool.

I have never had anyone think it odd, and I see others do it all the time. My guess is you may have gotten the reaction because you left the table without saying a word to anyone.

I ask for a cover from the pit critter and leave them. I've done this with 50k+ many times before and never had an issue. I wouldn't just leave them like you do at a poker table.

It sounds like you didn't even tell them. Because usually from what I've seen if someone wants to hit the bathroom and starts picking up their chips the dealer will be the one to tell them they can just leave them there.

Whenever I've done it they usually put the plastic cover over as well and my total chips are usually only in the 5k +/- range. But I don't do it much I guess.

Anyone know with craps how it would work? In blackjack its simple but I wouldn't want to leave chips on an open rack in craps and I can't recall ever seeing anyone do that. Do they allow it? Is there any type of cover they can put over the rack?

They'll usually give you a towel to put over your chips. I've done it before. But not at a really crowded table.

This applies to your other thread about what is/isn't a raise in poker: you seem to be working with the presumption that what happens in one casino, or what are their rules or policy, is the same in all casinos... even if they are in different countries. Well, its that or else you are thinking that these dealers can read your mind.

At your local casino its probably OK for you to get up and just walk away - the dealers and pit staff probably know who you are and what your habits are, even if you have had hardly any interaction with them in the past. But in Las Vegas you are but one of millions of faces that they'll see that year and the city is just a big magnet for scammers and cheats and people looking for ways to relieve other people of their money.

That doesn't mean you can't leave your chips at the table when you have to get up and go to the restroom or something, but you just need to let them know because even though they have all these people working the pit and dealers there and cameras if you just up and wander off they have no idea whats your intentions if you don't let them know.

I walk away from poker tables in Vegas all of the time and leave my chips. No one has ever said boo, unless of course you miss a blind.

During craps they cover it with a towel. I've never had a problem, even at busy tables. When i leave for the restroom or something most the time they set up the towel without having to ask. However, I think that the local casinos focus more on customer service, and at a busy strip table they're gonna have their attention diverted too often.

In craps its the towel or sometimes they have plastic covers that fit over the chip rack (as long as you're not on a corner )

Have left my chips & drink at the table without any problem in Vegas - I always mention to the dealer that I'm gonna head off for a minute or two, I'd certainly never do so without saying anything first though.

I did this a dozen times at Mirage over the weekend with a simple 'I'll be right back' to the dealer (both at BJ and Craps) and had no problem. At craps they put a towel over my chips.
