How do they preserve expensive scotch?

So I was looking at the wine list of the Craftsteak restaurant at MGM and I saw that they have Macallan 57 for $2000 a glass...

Now I wouldn't expect that they go through a bottle of this very often...if ever...so how do they seal it to prevent oxidation? do they pull a vacuum? or fill it with nitrogen or some other gas to remove the oxygen?

They just store it in a cool, dark, dry place. That's good enough to make the whiskey last indefinitely.

 

good to know. I got a behind-the-scenes tour of the storage facility at the Harry S. Truman Home. Few cases of his whiskey there...

My tummy is a cool dark place.... hmmm.

 

It's 40%+ alcohol. That's all the preservation it needs to last nearly forever.

It doesn't specify. I would assume a standard dram...so around 2 ounces

$15000 / 25 = $600 per oz retail price (sort of). So if you get two ounces (which I doubt) it is not marked up all that much.

It is probably one ounce.

On a side note, McAllan 60 was available recently with only 72 bottles coming up for sale with an estimated retail of $20k to $30k. One came up for auction and sold for $54,000

Sure will, just have to be sure that 40%+ is the only preservative you use - adding a large serving of fries to the mix will do neither you nor the Scotch any good preservation wise

 

Sorry, but the proof isn't enough to prevent oxidation. Once a bottle gets to about the 30% level, active measures need to be taken to prevent degradation. These include nitrogen capping, vacuum-sealing and my personal favorite: killing the bottle with friends.


BTW, the markup on that bottle is quite reasonable - only 107%.
