I will be in vegas for sweet sixteen weekend. I plan being in the sportbooks betting the ponies and games. I was wondering which sportsbooks are the most liberal with free drink tickets?

From what I understand, the Bellagio has changed their policy (which used to be free drinks no matter what).

Most of the strip properties require $125+ in combined tickets for 1 drink ticket on sports betting. If you tip the ticket writer, they usually give you a few more.

On horses, it's one ticket per $5 horse bet at most casinos.

You can bring your own beer and liquor into the sports book though... no one cares (although I was approached by Mirage security once with my cooler, but I was just passing through and on my way to Caesars sports book).

Wherever you go, find out the policy. If it's free drinks on $5 ponies and $100 for sports (which isn't uncommon), it's easy to game the system. Bet your basketball anyway you want and don't worry about it.

When you want a drink ticket, look at the next horse race and pick the three horses with the lowest odds (the three favorites). All you need is the race number and those three horses' numbers. Go to the window and say you'd like a quinella box on the three horses. This will cost you $6. If any of those three horses finish in the first two places, you get paid for picking the two winners in the correct order, and you'll get a decent payout depending on the odds on each of your horses.

A variation, if there's one horse that's a prohibitive favorite, instead of quinella box take quinella horse #(favorite) over the next three favorites. That means you're only getting paid if your favorite wins, but you get three chances at second place.

If you can bet dogs, even better, as the favorites tend to hold up more.

Over time this is a fairly low house advantage way to bet the ponies. Don't forget to ask for your drink ticket, and don't forget to tip the cage on your winners. Another hint, hit the same clerk over and over. He'll know your bets, and remember your tips.

One of my group schmoozed it up with the cocktail waitress at the mirage, then it was free drinks for the rest of our stay whenever she was on duty

Ya , I can confirm that Bellagio switched their policy a couple months ago. I think Hilton is last remaining place you can get drinks in the sportsbook without a certain amount bet on a game.

The rules for comped drinks in sports books changes from casino to casino and can change from day to day. It never hurts to ask what the policy is when you're there.

Three year ago at the Wynn book on Breeders Cup weekend.

Friday - free drinks, nothing needed
Saturday- had to show the cocktail waitress some betting slips
Sunday - had to have drink tickets from the ticket writers

    Same waitress all three days.

Not surprising at the Wynn. I have stayed at Wynn and at Encore. I'm not sure why people are so in love with that place.

My experiences are limited to the Caesars Palace book. Never had much luck getting drink tickets unless I was making wagers over $100. I have found it easier to stop off at one of the drug stores on the strip and pick up a six pack before the games. No issues to date brining in my own beers.

Thanks for posting those guys. Someone just told me about the former Bellagio policy I was going to try it out, but don't need to waste my time now. I'm not that big of a bettor.

Tipping has ALWAYS gotten me tickets. One time, a $5 tip on a total of $100 in bets got me the entire booklet of drink tickets at Paris (~20 drink tickets). But a $3-$5 tip with my bet has always gotten me some decent amount of tickets.

I would suggest otherwise. Most casinos' drink policy is pretty consistent. You have to place a bet of certain amount to get free drinks.

It used to be that Bellagio and Rio (not sure if it still is) were a some of the very few places that you get free drinks in the sports book. Apparently, even Bellagio has changed this.

What determines the drink tickets you get are your bets, but more importantly, which bet agent you get when you bet. Being nice and chatting with them really, really helps. Tipping also helps. But famililarity with the betting agent is most critical, I believe in my experiences.

But the bottomline is that generally speaking, most casinos' drink policy does not change day to day. It stays the same.
