I got the video to play ... basically a news report, and some of the same views as the still pictures. Looks like it will be an "upscale" type property for downtown, but hard to tell from nothing but room pictures, and a $70 / night room tab. Not my style .... unless they have lots of full-pay VP.

Think I will wait until about a year after it opens so i can get a room for $39.

    I like a "good gamble".

    Thanks for the video, Joe.
    .
I hope they still have the old pool ?
    ( or a new one )
Another Downtown property w/ a pool is
    a good thing.
    .
    I agree w/ Cousin Eddie......think I'll wait
until the opening buzz is over and they realize
$70 room is not a good gamble.

If they would just put in very good video poker and $5 3:2 double deck blackjack, they will have a

    crowd all the time!

Yep, like I said in another thread. Fontainebleau furniture and carpet. So the rooms will basically be Plaza rooms, although they should be quieter. The pool area does sound really cool, but I would imagine they will trick it out to be like the Golden Nugget, in which case, I will stick with Plaza or Gold Spike.

Damn, I will have to pay to stay there at least one night when it first opens, just for memories sake though.

Thanks for the links. I stayed when it was Lady Luck...very clean, dated, and tacky. I loved it!

They were renovating the buffet room, though the buffet was still running and they had free beer on tap to apologize for the construction. My friend just about cried when he saw the free beer and said he'd never leave. He might still be there amidst the construction. I'll check when they reopen.

So excited to see the property opening again!

Price seems steep to me too. I am not optimistic that this place is going to provide "value" when I look at 5th streets other places.... Seigel Slots, Lucky Club, and Opera House aren't places I am dying to get out to.

It looks like it's going to be nice. I hope they're successful. I think the price will come down, maybe settle in the $50 range?

Thanks to the OP for this post. Looking forward to this casino reopening. One more reason to go downtown.

It really looks like it is going to be a nice place. I would probably choose the Downtown Grand over Golden Nugget. It looks like its gonna be a nice place but I guess time will tell

Like said before: another place downtown with a decent pool would be welcomed. The D's pool has little to be desired. Thankfully few people ever use it so it works in a bind when there in the summer. Nuggets pool is over crowded when I stayed there. haven't heard an update on the Plaza pool yet but the resort fee will probably keep me off that property. :(

Plaza pool is the same as always. I personally love it. Only real issue I have with it now, is that the furniture leaves much to be desired. Most of the chairs are broken down.

It does not look like this new place will effectively compete with the Gold Spike for my business. I like their little pool and it is open early and at least on one November visit, it was heated, so I swam mornings when the air was chilling.
To compete I'd have to get the wifi and Turner Classic Movies.
Room quality at the Gold Spike suits me. I really like the recessed mounting of the television in the wall. I don't need anything more upscale.
But playing mosting live poker, I pay for rooms rather than look for my slot play to pay for them. The Gold Spike gambling leaves much to be desired.
In the marketing the Grand sounds as if they want to compete with the Nugget with all the talk of attracting those who want value rather than lower cost, the "its only money" crowd.
I just don't see that happening.
Generally, I don't see downtown attracting the upscale crowd with pizzazz. Most of the attempts have failed. Folks who was fancy stay on the strip. Practical kinds of amenities and good gambling will be what draws folks into a downtown casino.
And I don't expect good gambling because no place opens anymore with decent gambling.
However, I did see that "long bar" attract folks at the D. So perhaps some pizzazz works.
I doubt that the Grand will offer the VP that the Four Queens offers with the best Double Bonus in the world, or that offered by MSS with great bar paytables and the extra value of the scratch off cards.

I think they were referring to the range of prices when they threw out the $70 figure. My guess would be that weekends would be higher, longer stays including the weekend woud cause it to be lower and demand will affect prices like it does with all hotels.

    Dewey,
I think we are pretty much on the same page as what we like in a hotel. While I think I would take the El Cortez over Gold Spike, I won't pay the penalty for over 7 nights and I usually stay at least 8. Gold Spike offers a good price for weeknights and weekends alone are reasonable at around $45 but cheaper if they fall in a longer stay. I am usually solo so it is plenty big enough and I find it comfortable. The staff has always been great and I do like the restaurant.....so handy and a decent breakfast for a good price. I have been there 3 times and at least once during NASCAR and I cannot get over how quiet it is. I never hear a TV, people talking loud, doors slamming etc. Once in awhile I hear people walking in the hall but that's about it. The neighborhood is fine, the location is convenient and hile it lacks a few things like a view, a decent chair, a bottle opener, dripes that darken the room, an ice machine on the floor, and a fridge, I can survive there just fine for a good price.

While the Downtown Grand will perhaps draw some people from the Strip, and some people from other downtown hotels, I don't see them with read discounted rates. However, it does improve the infastructure of downtown, and the increased number of rooms may cause rooms at other places like GS and EC , 4Q and others to be low to compete.
