Walking back from the Boneyard on Tuesday, I ran into a guy wearing a Guardian Angels T-shirt and beret. He is here on a solo mission to start a Guardian Angels group downtown.
His patrol is just outside the core downtown hotel area.

I wished him luck as I know the GAs have been a positive presence in other cities.

Yep, major props to the GAs. They perform a great community service. Not sure if downtown needs them, but more power to Curtis Silwa and his group. They are the good guys......:nworthy:

How would you define "outside the core"? Are you talking anything that isn't under the canopy? Or further out like a few blocks off FSE?

I haven't felt unsafe downtown, so I'm not as concerned as some people. But it seems like it can't hurt to have a few extra pairs of eyes out there to keep people safe.

Weren't the GA's big in the 80's? Always wore red t-shirts and black berets? I haven't heard about them in a long time

Why? I don't mean to sound negative but I don't believe Vegas needs Vigilantes. I believe Metro does a good job, and strikes a good balance of being visible, but not to the point of ruining the atmosphere.

Sonya: I met up with him near the Neon Museum and walked and chatted down LVB towards FSE.

Somebody: I didn't get the sense it was vigilanteism, rather having a presence and supporting who may need some help. I hope it ends up being complementary to Metro, not in conflict with it.

I do not believe they are vigilantes, they act as a presence and deterrent to crime. They actually have very good working relations with theNYPD. They are not a gang to cause trouble, these guys are the white hats, not the black hats, even though they wear red berets.......

If they were trained and could help someone in an emergency situation using sound mind and judgement with skills in first aid, maybe packed with emergency gear like those Red Cross vans then I cool with it. Martial arts is good so far as learning to react with sound mind. Helps to defer possible negative situations into possible positive ones. Chinese martial arts is good for that. Then I'm for their presence.

Perfect! I'm joining them next month. I assume I'll need to buy my own shirt and beret...

Ok so that makes two downtown now.

I usually spend my time in downtown when in Vegas. The few blocks surrounding FSE are very safe and well patrolled by metro. However, I've walked beyond Fremont east, and north of the freeway on main and LVB and encountered some shady characters and pushy transients. I don't think its a bad idea to have a neighborhood watch to help supplement the police. Eyes and ears are invaluable to a police force in such a large community.

^^^^^^^+1. I always stay safe downtown, but a couple of GA people certainly can't hurt. More power to them.....:nworthy:

I too have ventured way beyond Fremont East and other areas downtown. While it certainly doesn't illicit an image of downtown detroit or anything it is kinda shady and another set of eyes never hurt anything. I wish them the best of luck! They are a much more than a neighborhood watch group.

The only place I've seen them recently is Chicago.

They used to patrol some areas near downtown Omaha, but I haven't seen them for years.

I went into downtown Omaha several years back and there was some city celebration going on. The police were decked out in Keystone Cop uniforms. The big hats, walking around twirling those old fat nightsticks.
