I am an engineer...and I know how RNGs work. But I have always wondered if hitting a button while the reels are spinning on a video slot in order to stop the reels really does actually stop them...

According to many things I have read, the outcome of the spin is determined the moment you hit the spin button and the noise and spinning reels is just for show.

So when you hit a button to stop the reels does it just snap to the already determine result? or does it actually stop the reels?

I was sitting next to someone today who was stopping the reels every spin and they hit 8 or 9 free spin bonus rounds in about a 30 minute window...

Does it just seem like it is working because they are playing more spins per minute by stopping it?

Stopping just snaps to a predetermined hit. There's no skill involved. The people who are most aggressive about it really just like playing their game that fast but there are a ton of people who think they are affecting the outcome.

I have been know to "stop" the reels. Not actually stop, but speed up the process. People ask me if that helps as sometimes it seems that I get more bonus rounds. I tell them it does not.

The only reason I get more bonus rounds is that I play more times, and of course play all lines. I am sure the outcome is already determined the second I hit the button the first time.

The person next to me that is playing only a few lines and takes considerably more time to hit the button again of course will get less bonus rounds.

Giving players the ability to stop the reels is one of the most brazen and yet brilliant psychological moves by the slot manufacturers.

Ah! my favorite most hated misconception, have met a couple people thinking (knowing) this as true and seen more saying it at places as youtube. Gawd! Close to bursting something, there are no reasoning with them. For the love everything holy... slots not a game of skill, else would have it as a blooming olympic event! Sorry.. :grrr:

Even if you could stop them, who is to say that is better than letting them stop themselves?

    Stupid.

The ONLY difference is that by stopping the reels you end up playing faster (more spins/hour), which is always a bad decision for the underdog in the game (you!).

Stopping or not stopping you will get EXACTLY the same result every spin. It's already chosen what you'll get when you hit the initial spin button.

Casino management has two maxims that they live by:

    1. "Bet 'em slow, they've got to go."

    2. "Bet 'em fast, they can't last."

    Sounds about right to me.

Another one I've seen is on some of these 'Big Event' type games, where everyone plays a shared bonus round on the big screen above. You have to play fast in order to keep your multiplier number higher. If you play slowly, you won't get the 2X, 5X, 10X, etc. when the big bonus round comes.

You pretty much have to do the "stop" routine to speed up the play to get those higher multipliers. I tend to decide to play strong and fast, with the hope I get a good multiplier, vs long and slow and doing 1 or 2x. As a result, I have gotten many hand pays on those type games.

But remember that those people who rub the screen while the reels are spinning always make the wins come faster!

    (Snicker.)

I've seen it for over 20 years and it never fails to make me laugh.

If that method actually worked, imagine what tickling the machine through the coin drop would do! Well, when coin drops existed anyway.

Yeah, i hate those people. Remember the "I Dream of Jeannie" slots? And when you tickled her belly she would giggle?

The RNG generates the result the moment the button or lever is pushed/pulled. The result follows in the form of the reels stopping at a certain position which has been determined, IE the reels or video screen or whatever.

The same is true in games like Wheel of Fortune with the spins. As soon as the button is pushed the results have been determined.

The reels, colored lights, bells, whistles and buzzers are only there to entice you to play, and they work like a charm, don't ya know.

Don't forget your rabbits foot, or Little Jade Buddha, or that lucky coin.

And don't forget to consult your psychic or Ouija Board prior to playing those one armed bandits.

Most of the new WMS machines will show little sparkles if you rub the screen - little sparks and stars and bursts that follow your fingers, trailing sparkle dust.

And I think most people rub the screen before they spin... if you rub during the spin on most games that will stop the reels.

I didn't know that about the sparkles! That's very clever and will certainly feed into the superstition.

I really noticed people do the magic rub on the reel machines, not the video ones, but I rarely play slots anymore. But I may have to look for the twinkly ones.

    How Clever!

What wil they think of next to suck us in?

If this is true it merely comes to the pre determined position faster, speeding up the game but not changing the outcome which was determined the millisecond the button was pushed and the signal was generated to the RNG.

Man, the longer i have been doing this and the more shows I watch and columns i read, and from practical experience the more I am sure that I am an Idiot if I play any negative expectation game with the hope of winning over any long term of play.

The odds against that big jack pot are so remote I'd rather try to swim to Hawaii than play the Mega Bucks, I'd have a better chance.

But what the hay, someone's got to win it right?

It's usually some tourist that has been to Vegas about once or twice from some place like Podunk Iowa that wins it at the airport while waiting for their plane to board.

All I can say is GOOD LUCK!

Me, I've scaled it back to low rolling and trolling for low end comps to try to minimize my losses while attempting to play as close to perfect strategy as possible on games with the lowest house edge.

I mean it's great to have a few free drinks or a buffet or even a free room sometimes while breaking close to even or even winning a few bucks.

As Uncle Eddie said.....Clark, it's tourists that come here to Las Vegas and blow the family nest egg that built this town.......

The ability to stop the slots is usually on the video displays because they can simply have the actual results appear slowly or immediately via the code.

My brother-in-law believes firmly in this. In fact all the "superstitions" relating to slots like stop buttons, and sparkles on the screen and reels symbols almost on the payline making it due to hit soon, all of these he believes in wholeheartedly.

He enjoys re-living his slot exploits to whom-ever will listen and vow endlessly as to how he'll hit it big the next time. Who knows? Maybe he will.

He does not believe the RNG exists.

He's happy in what he believes in. And I will not be the one to burst his bubble of happiness. Hey, I play slots too. Somebody gotta win the big one. And my chances are just as good as the next guy, lol!

Along the same lines here's something that I've thought might be true.

RNG's are really pseudo random number generators, they require a seed value or the random result sequence will always be the same. The seed should be as unique as possible, the simplest method is to use the current date/time of the computer down to the millisecond. That isn't particularly secure and on a slot if you did that you would probably use the date/time of when the machine booted. To get a more random value you can take the date/time and apply a modifier like it's serial # or something but the problem is that if the modifier is fixed you still aren't as random as you should be. Also if you don't re-seed every once in a while you will end up with a repeating pattern of results.

Anyway, my wife will randomly cash out and then put the ticket back in or put new cash in. She thinks this helps and at first I laughed at her but then I started thinking about the seed value. If I were a slot programmer I might just use the money/ticket insertion date/time and the value of the credits inserted to set the seed. Think about it, people are constantly putting cash in, on some machines on a slot floor it might be 1000 times a day. If each time you reset the seed you would achieve a high degree of randomness.

If they do that then there is some logic to doing that if you're running into a bad sequence of results. Now I know that in a random system over a long period of time the payout will be what has been set but on a short term basis changing up the RNG seed might actually return a "better" result set.

BTW don't pick on the I Dream Of Jeanie tickle, I hated that machine but when I was bored and just sitting watching my wife play it that at least made it funny. Actually my favorite extra thing was touching the chicken on Money Storm, he'd do like 4 different things randomly. At least someone had a sense of humor when they programmed it.

Yes, PRNGs actually produce a predictible sequence of random numbers if you know the seed and the specific PRNG. However, this gives you zero chances to choose a 'set' of numbers or anything like that. The key feature is that it is generating new numbers ALL THE TIME, not just when anyone hits the next spin button. The next spin you get is dependent on the exact millisecond you hit the spin button. Later or earlier you get a different result.

The next spin is NOT the 'next' set of random numbers in the PRNG sequence. Because of the thousands of numbers generated and thrown away that are never used between spins, worrying about how and when the PRNG is re-seeded is pointless. Also, the numbers that start from a new seed aren't any more or less random (or less 'good') that those generated far away from that last re-seeding.
