Has anyone ever done this? I am plannig a trip - want to stay on the strip- preferrably mid-south section ( thinking Excalibur ). But if you choose the option of paying before you know the hotel they do show some great deals on 4-5 star hotels ( where as the Excalibur is only a 3 ). I am just skeptical - as i do not want to be tooo far down South !! Any thoughts- experiences etc?

If your bar is set at Excalibur, I dont think you will be dissapointed. Worst case south would be Luxor, and its just a hop from the Castle.

But if they are saying four or five star, the Luxor is prob off the list. I have done the surprise bookings in other cities and have not been disapointed.

I believe there is a forum called BetterBidding that has a list of every hotel in each area and it's star rating and amenities so you can have a good idea of which hotel you are bidding on before they show you the name.

I used Priceline once and got one night at the Venetian for something like $103. Not too shabby.

yes. .. www.betterbidding.com is the place to use. Priceline and Hotwire will both give you the best deals. . . better price than anywhere else. BUT you have to be careful for a couple of things For Example: Hotwire includes Trump as 5 star north Strip so people have bought thinking they are getting LVS or WYNN and they end up with Trump. ,, . . ., Hotwire sometimes includes Westin as Strip South even though the general opinion would be 'near-strip' etc etc. So basically you have to know the properties before you blindly bid. this is where www.betterbidding.com comes in. You can go into the message boards at www.betterbidding.com and post all of the amenities and prices etc, and they can decipher which property it is for you before you bid. They use research like how the properties list amenities, the TripADvisor approval ratings, etc. I have booked through Hotwire and Priceline both, and always use better bidding.com first and have never been steered wrong. (and no, in case you think i am excessively cheerleading, I have no connection to them. . I just find it so helpful. . especially with bidding strategies using re-bid zones and such)
    good luck

You're going to vegas. I say take your first gamble. It does depend on who's doing the rating, as I've seen expedia call a lot of places '4 stars' that I wouldn't (cough, luxor, cough). But you're certainly not getting a downgrade from Excalibur so it's worth the risk.

I imagine either Luxor or Trop could be the "4-star" bargain you're seeing.

Yes, Tropicana is listed as a 4* hotel on Hotwire (???!?!?!?), but Luxor is a 3.5*.

    Tropicana has better hookers.

Haha. Last time I was in Vegas I got hit on by a hooker in the elevator at the Cosmopolitan as I was returning to my room for the night.

She asked if I was a gambler and I said yes, but I'd been losing that day and she said something along the lines of, "You'll NEVER lose with me" and whipped out her boob. It was awkward.

Alway check the amenities section before you bid. It lists if the property has a casino or not. That little bit will flag if it is the Trump every time.

After the re-model I would give the Trop's hotel 4*'s, the casino a 2. It really is a nice hotel, if it is a half star rating up from Luxor, someones high. The Luxor to me was nothing more than a Super 8 with Egyptian symbols painted on a cheap TV stand. TV wasn't even a flat screen. Ick.

bidding is real easy and you can get great deals but you will have to do some research
