Simple actually. There are a base amount of numbers--80 I think. You choose a few that you think might come up and you get paid when a certain number of them come up; the more that come up the more you win. The games are numbered and after placing your bets you can check back later to see if you've won or you can sit and watch. Many folks will say it's the worst game to win on but it's Vegas and it's all subjective to what you like.

Besides it's how the Griswold's made their million dollars in Vegas Vaction. :)

To me, the value of Keno is a way to rest and relax and kill time and get a lot of free drinks. Often during a long evening of casino hopping, we will find a Keno rooom, spend a few bucks on a few games of Keno and get three or four drinks over the course of a half an hour.

    Yes and no...

There are two kinds of keno you can play: the traditional kind where you fill out the paper slip (either in the casino coffee shop or if it has a keno lounge) or video keno like you find on the stand alone machines or part of the "Game King" machines.

Traditional keno will have a house edge as much as 20-24%, so that will be one of the worst bets a player can make in the casino.

Video keno usually only has a house edge of 2-4.5% so it is often a better bet than most slot machines at the same denomination.

I have seen 2 people win 10k for $1 in a casino and they were both playing keno.

Never tried the keno free drink thing but might have to look into it next trip.

I think it was more like $40,000 they won. Million dollars would've been a sweet win!

I think its was only $20K. Just enough for Clark to recoup his money and pay off Eddie. But they still rode home in 4 free cars!

Every time I've played Keno I've always kissed the ticket and said "Money. Money, Money" Like Sid did in the movie for luck!

Best kept secret, (only for my LVMB friends)
Some of the best drink service in the casino, can be the Keno room.

Make sure & tip your waitress, & keep the drinks flowing.

    (Super Secret)
You can play multi game keno cards, for as little as 10 cents a game.
(please don't tell anyone) shhhh just between us.

Before I became more fortunate in business, in my younger years this was my fav happy Hour.

    Have fun :drunk:

I love Keno especially at the coffee shop but it's like a 19% house advantage so I've also never ever ever won one penny.

It's so easy to play it's almost ridiculous. Have fun.
you can buy the same numbers for any number of games, hold onto you card and come back later that night (in most instances, check first) to see if you won anything. That way you don't have to sit there all night and slowly see your bro-in-law lose.

Why is the house edge so much lower on video keno compared to traditional?

I don't have an answer, but my guess would be:

The payback/house edge is determined by what a number of hits versus a number of picks pays out.

The numbers for traditional keno, like what hitting 5 balls on a pick 8 ticket pays out, are pretty standard everywhere you go and are probably based on the original payout numbers for the game when it was introduced to North America about a century ago (the game itself is actually much older).

So thats probably just a case of: if everybody has the same numbers, we might as well too. And that keno players are already playing a game with a bad payback so its probably not likely they are too discerning about different payouts.

With video keno its probably just that the game's paytables are set up so that its payout is more on par with the slot machines of the same denomination.
