I read about a mugging at a las vegas hotel that happened in July, and since I am a woman traveling alone, (meeting up with a few other women) we are a bit concerned, as its the same hotel as we will be staying. We are wondering if its legal to carry mace with us? I know in some states its not legal but we would like to each carry a small can with us. I know I would not be able to have it in my carry on bag for my flight...but it would be ok in checked baggage wouldnt it?

And you don't make a target out of yourself. IE: late at night standing in a busy part of the casino where everybody can see you and pulling out a wad of money and counting up the hundies...

Sounds so basic, but you actually see people do stupid stuff like that all the time.

Well there was probably more than one mugging in all of July :)

But its one of those crimes that can happen anywhere and in Las Vegas in the big tourist areas like The Strip and Downtown its going to be pretty rare, maybe more common at like 3-5AM but that goes back to not making a target out of yourself.

But happening in a hotel is actually pretty rare and since no mention of the hotel or link to a news article we can't really say what could have happened, IE: a guy mugged in the far reaches of the parking garage at 3:30AM while he drunkely went back to his car is quite a different story than somebody mugged at 10PM in the hallway outside their hotel room.

Plus muggings actually taking place at the hotel usually really mean "John rolled by hooker" or "John trying to explain to his wife why he has so much less money than he did an hour or two ago" or "drug dealer sold him a bag of baby powder"

Imperial Palace, off elevators of 6th floor. I dont have a news link or anything just the facebook page for imperial. I do know its not the best place...but its what is affordable for the ladies in the group. It just concerns me a little because some of us may want to go for a late night coffee or drink or snack.

Walk like you mean it (with purpose) you know what I mean, you are a farm girl after all! (assuming from your photo)
Best to walk with a buddy or two. Keep aware of your surroundings.
Should you decide you want to you can always ask a security person to escort you to your room. Remember those hallways outside of the rooms generally have cameras.
You will have a great time.

    Another safety concern...

Has anyone been to the bus depot lately after dark, the one downtown where you'd walk past the old Lady Luck (maybe on Stewart?) Several years ago, we walked there to get the bus in the early evening but it was dark. There clearly appeared to be gangs hanging out and we were so nervous and said we wouldn't go there again. However, my elderly sister is a LV resident, without a car, and we may need to walk her to the bus depot so she can get back home. Any better security there now?

Use OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) rather than Mace. OC is more effective.

Rare occurrence. Really. During your visit, look around at all the little old ladies that are out and about. They all seem to do just fine.

That's old info. Mace is a manufacturer. They used to market a self defense spray that utilized chemicals and it was weak. All of their defense sprays are now capsicum pepper based.

pretty sure you can't take Mace (or pepper spray or the equivalent) on a plane either. I guess you could go to a store once you got to LV. All the other posters are right on, IMO. Be aware, if you feel unsafe get security. They will walk with you.

That is correct. If a can were to fail in a closed aircraft cabin, that would be a BAD thing. You can probably get one through in your checked bags, but you obviously risk having TSA removing it during screening.

There is safety in numbers, just stay together, and avoid less crowded areas, and you should be fine!!:drunk:

Try Walgreens when you get to LV

If you cant get pepper spray or similar just look for something in a can or spray bottle that you can spray in an attackers eyes just to give you that split second to get away. Best thing is to take simple precautions and use common sense like most people say here.

Something to keep in mind is that in vegas you will be under almost 24/7 surveillence for a big busy city is is very safe for tourists.

its more things like pick pockets and the like that most people would encounter.

i dont think you would need mace to fend off a pickpocket.

of course dont spend time out back in alleys by the dumpsters and you will be fine.

PMed Candy Apple about this, but just be aware that the downtown transit center is closed and I wouldn't walk the 6 or so blocks to get to the Bonneville Transit Center after dark. It's on Bonneville, between LV Blvd & Main St.

Taking a bus is an option.

    Re: Gang members

Candy Apple, Gang members don't bother old ladies or mature women.

They like to hang out together selling drugs. That must be their job at that
    Bus Station.

Problems can happen when other gang members show up. You need to
dodge the bullets. Or... a drug deal went wrong.

I remember one time after my friend and I left a nightclub in Calif.. We saw gang members as we walked to our car. We knew we were safe because they were not looking at us gals but looking over our heads and looking
    at other gang members.
We rushed to our car to get out of their way because we knew there would be some trouble between them.

My advise is to not go out in the dark night to a isolated bus place.

When I go to Vegas I make sure I stay with the crowd of people during the
night. I stay away from the contruction areas because you can get trapped
by a theif and you are helpless if you are all alone in the area at night.

There is construction at the Imperial Palace. I am sure security is now
keeping an eye on their clients.

I always look to see if there are other people going up an elevator at the hotel. I always wait for one by myself. Some people act like it is the last elevator going up.lol. Lucy

Your best protection against being a crime victim is the same in Las Vegas as any other place -- common sense.

Millions of tourists flock to Vegas every month and still it's rare to hear about tourists becoming crime victims in the main tourist areas
    downtown or along the Strip.

That said, Las Vegas' scariest appearing place I've ever seen is the Greyhound Bus Depot next to the Plaza Hotel. I had to go there once to pick up an item from their Package Express service. The facility was extremely creepy and the people hanging around there looked like they'd just as soon cut your throat as to say "good morning."
