I've been reading the recent craps threads, very interesting questions, content, and informative responses.

I've noticed a bet that some people make from time to time and I have no idea what this bet is. I'm too busy keeping track of my bets, lol!

My question: What kind of bet is this when a player puts a chip directly ON THE LINE that separates the pass line bet and the no-pass line bet. I see it done after the come-out, but not sure if you can do it any other time.

Is this the put bet that has been mentioned recently in other threads? My mind tells me no but I'm just not sure.

So what is this bet, how does it pay, and why would you do it? :confused2::blink::confused:

I may be mistaken, but I believe that that bet is for someone who places the line bet after the come out roll has been made?

Thanks. All the posters here do contribute to a good site.

Think of the Pass Line as having a certain width as depicted in the layout.
If you chip is on the pass line (clearly withing the box labeled Pass) then your chip is a Pass Line bet. This is simple to understand. Really, it is!

IF, however, your chip straddles the pass line or is viewed as being partly inside the box and partly closer to your undepicted odds area, then the bet is a PLACE BET ON THE POINT ONLY... you are NOT going to get paid on an 11 or a 7.

If its a matter of being sloppy... the dealers SHOULD speak to you about it to clarify your intentions. If its a jammed up table ... too bad if you get sloppy.

So the rule is simple: If you want to make a Pass Line bet position your chips properly. Directly in front of your chip-rail and clearly within the marked Pass Line area and not in any way straddling any other area of the layout.

Dealers are often not clear in explaining this to you but it is always a good rule to follow: place your bets precisely and follow them to be certain the dealer positions them precisely.

I once had a dealer misposition my come bet. When the bet won several rolls later, the dealer paid the player to my left who promptly moved them a foot to his right and left them on the layout for me to pick up, thus acknowledging that it was a dealer error. Don't expect such gentlemenly players though. You position your chips precisely and you make sure the dealer takes your bets and positions them precisely. Speak up. Dealers would rather have you ask stupid questions than have fist fights later on.

It's the same as a place bet on the point. You get slightly better odds on a place bet if you come in after the point, but want to bet on it.

Putting your chip on the pass line is called placing the point. This is a self service bet and can only be used when a point has been established. You can pickup this bet at anytime unlike a passline bet which you can't remove. It will pay off the same odds as if you gave the money to the dealer and asked them to place it on the top of the board.

Put Bet - This is a way to designate which number you would like a come bet on without having to roll the number first. You can place odds on your put bet.

Side Note: You should never put bet the 4/10 unless you can take 20x odds or better. You are better off buying it. A put bet on the 5/9 or 6/8 will pay exactly the same as a place bet when you are at a table that offers 3x/4x/5x odds. The put bet itself will be on during a comeout roll vs a placebet that will be off. The odds are off unless called on.

The only real reason to use a put bet at a 3x/4x/5x table is to be able to place a higher amount on the number then the table maximum allows. You can both place and put bet the same number.

VERY well explained. If i come to a table and want to do this i will tell them them loud enough ( because the dice table can get loud) so the pit critters can hear me. Have NEVER had a problem but again i make it point so that we are all on the same page.

Its perhaps not such a good bet to make but that is up to you to decide. The main thing is to always be clear and explicit in all respects. Anything you say and any positioning of your chips should be absolutely obvious.

Its the sloppiness that creeps into a game that can cause disputes and lower payoffs.

Personally, I don't place the point. Not ever. But if I were to do so, it would indeed be clear and explicit.

Electroguy's situation is interesting, he said that the bet was straddling between the pass line and the no pass line.

Normally in the situations that have been mentioned by other posters, the bet is normally placed between the pass line and the felt closer to the bettor. Never saw a bet straddling the pass/no pass bets so I'm not sure exactly what the bet was for in Electroguy's situation, maybe a don't pass place bet?

It is interesting because some casinos will allow you to put down a pass line and odds bet after the come out roll but other casinos will not so you have to do this straddling if you want to put a bet down on the point (had both happen to me).

Hey Makikiboy, your post got me thinking....maybe I only THOUGHT I saw the chip straddle the line between pass and no-pass. It might have been straddling the passline and odds bet area instead.(sorry...I'm a klutz..):goofy:

However, I swear I saw it done at the Cal. at least on one occassion. Could it be possible that the Cal dealers just let it go since all concerned knew what the bet was for? Maybe the player is well known by the dealers and is like me and can't remember where to place the bet properly?

Anyhoo, I didn't know what that bet is for and now I know...thanks to all of you knowlegeable craps players.:nworthy: I might just play that bet next time I visit Vegas.

hard to say. I play at the cal and never see that happen on purpose. I do see people toss their chip on the pass line and it crosses over to another area but usually the dealers ask what the bet is for or move it to put it fully on the pass line area. If it happens again the dealers usually take it as whatever the better mentioned the first time it happenned.

But then usually the dealers can tell after the point is established, if the bettor puts down the odds bet behind then it is probably a pass line bet. I forget, where do you put the don't pass odds bet? I hardly play the don't and hardly put odds on the don't so don't remember.
