Pics from sunni... Got 'em. I'm going to guess that this beautiful pic of the Sands was taken in 1988 based on the Mirage construction on the left. Looks like you were standing in the entrance to Caesars? A sign of things to come? The Sands marquee advertises "Never Ending Daily Slot Tourney", "Lobster Buffet", "Italian Luncheon Buffet 11:00am - 1:00pm Daily", "Liberal Video Poker 99% Return", and "World's Best Football Odds" instead of "Frank Sinatra", "Dean Martin", "Sammy Davis Jr.", "Peter Lawford", and "Joey Bishop" Harrah's riverboat (the old Holiday Casino) which is now Carnival Court The Oasis on the corner of Flamingo and the strip was part of the Dunes property (now Bellagio) Golden Nugget downtown sans canopy. Nice reflection of the old Mint tower (now Binions). Barbary Coast with a completed Mirage in the background (early '90s I'm guessing). Today this view of Mirage would probably be blocked by the clusterf... that is Caesars. Great pics sunni. Thanks for sharing them.
thanks for posting I know it was mid-late 80's ,cannot remember the exact year. Maybe someone can tell by the make & models of the cars..
Thankx Everyone for posting.Brings a tear to my eye. What I would give to see a Slappy White show...I can't quit laughing just thinking about it!
I believe the cab in front of the Oasis is around a 1988 Crown Vic. I've driven a lot of Crown Vics in life, but not as a cabbie. Prior to 88 they were more "boxy".
Here I am downtown in 1990. I loved the U2 video "Still haven't found what I'm looking for.", so I took a video where Bono was stopping traffic.
Love the mullett!! Hey, did I see a marquee that had "The Unknown Comic"? Is that the comic with the bag over his head?? I'm 35 and I can barely remember this guy. Anymore pics out there?? This is good stuff!!! If I only had a Delorean with a flux capacitor...
I freaking LOVE these pictures. I have only been going to vegas since 2002 so this is awesome for me!
bravo on this thread!! "vintage" vegas, aka the 40's-50's era seems to be all you ever see of "old vegas". The 70's thru the early 90's i find facinating, to see whats left , etc. And the strip looked just like any other strip mall drag in americana, plus the casino hotels. haha. great! post more! Ps, i found alot of these on flickr before, dont remember but if anyone sees em, post em!
Glad you like the thread tvon. I got permission from a friend at Flickr to post some from his massive collection I just haven't had time to do it yet. It will get done soon. I saved off probably close to 100 pics & need to sort through them. There is another guy who has literally thousands of great pics although not all Vegas. With his permission I will post some of those as well. I just bought an early 70s era Vegas travel book off eBay for .99 cents. Best buck I ever spent. I got it yesterday and it is mint. You can tell it's been sitting on a shelf & not touched for 35 years. I plan on scanning the pages & posting them either here or in a separate thread. In the meantime, if anyone else has any pics they'd like to share...
This thread is the best!!! My first trip wasn't until 2001 and I would have loved to stay in the Sands and the Dunes before they were torn down....but alas...................
Thank you, thank you, thank you to all those that have shared. What a great contribution. For a first, I've never added a link to a thread to my daily Vegas Link blog but thought this thread was worthy. Even sent a shout out of thanks to VegasAddict here- Vintage Vegas Pics From VegasMessageBoard.com Blog post
I'm a total newbie - planning my first trip to Vegas in 2008. Before I did research, I thought that today's Vegas looked like the pics that have been posted. Wow, that must have been a fun time.
Could you be referring to these: http://flickr.com/photos/my_vegas/ ?? i'm not going to post them since i dont have permission however since they are publicly displayed on flickr, i thought i'd share the link.
Yep. That's the guy. There's also a couple of other members - roadside pictures and roaming vegas that have some nice stuff but I do not yet have their permission to copy. Many of vintage vegas's pics are not his personal photos however. He posts a combination of his own and others he's found on the web from sites such as the UNLV archives. The object of this thread is for individuals to post their own pics & stories. It's more interesting when you know that the pics are fresh from the owners personal collection. That being said, there are a few from vintage's collection that I believe either he or his father did take that are too good not to post here. I just don't want to start posting pics from the web that anyone can find using Google. I do encourage anyone that has an interest in Vegas history to take a look at his collection though.
found this vid http://youtube.com/watch?v=3MZ3ZYXA-Sg&feature=related Would be cool with an "old school" soundtrack.
Nice find bosco. I think that's a brand new Flamingo tower going up across the street from Caesars in one shot? Neat stuff.
That's a great video, Bosco. I noticed that the Peppermill was there back then, right next to the Silver Slipper. I had no idea it was that old. Oh, and how cool would it have been to be able to see Robert Goulet at the Frontier??? Mikey
