Resorts World lack of theme disappointment

I'll check it out next month, but my expectations are very low. If I can have a drink or two and find a machine that is not a total $20 bill eater I will be happy. I'm not expecting any bargains at all, and I'm certainly not expecting a reincarnation of the Stardust!

We checked it out opening weekend, although it was packed I wasn't all that impressed when we walked in the first thing that came to mind was the casino floor looked similar to the Venetian. The HL room or lounge they have seems nice, found a roulette table played one spin, won $175 and cashed out and kept one fresh $5 chip to add to my collection. Walked around looking for a gift shop to get some dice or a deck of cards but didn't find one, even the guy at the cashier cage didn't know where it was...

 

I wasn’t expecting any bargains or it recreate the experience of Stardust, I guess I just expected the newest and most expensive hotel/casino in Vegas to have some things that made me say “ohhh” or “wow”…I didn’t do either. I will spend more time there and perhaps my opinion will change.

 

They are generating traffic now based off being new. However, I’ve not heard many people raving about the ambiance, the gambling opportunities, or the restaurants. It appears to me that entertainment is going to have to be ther key for long term success or they may be e financial mess a few years from now.

I don't think they would want a San Francisco theme today as the definition of what that means has changed pretty significantly in the past few years.

 

The Theme is gone from Vegas forever. Resorts World is the latest de-theming and making RW another shopping mall. I haven't seen RW yet (maybe November 2021 or Spring 2022), but all the videos taken of RW exemplifies my displeasure with Vegas resorts have become over the years.
Gawd i miss Stardust, Stardust was the main attraction, at least for me since i first went to Vegas in 1977. In 1975, there was a project planned on the Strip called Xanadu. This is what Vegas needed to attract non gambling people who otherwise would never visit Vegas. Fortunately, heavily themes resorts started appearing with Excalibur/Mirage throughout the 90's. I loved the 90's because you had the old Vegas (Stardust), and the new Vegas (Mirage, Bellagio) coexisting on the Strip. Casino hopping from the old/new, from Sahara/Stardust to NYNY/Luxor on the South end was my true life Fantasy.

The Xanadu:
THEME

The Xanadu is proposed as a 1730 Room "International Class" Hotel and Casino, to be located "On the Strip" in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Approaching the overwhelming Porte Cochere, attention is immediately focused upon the "Firefalls," cascading waters which nearly stretch across the site, penetrated by the red-orange licks of dancing flames.

Upon entering the Xanadu, the soaring atrium some twenty stories in height, capped by the shimmering essence of mirror and crystal above, and down to the action and animation of the Casino below, dominates, and envelopes the viewer.

A lush garden fantasy of pergolas and gazebos located on the atrium deck overlooks the Casino, setting the tone for the Xanadu theme. On the way to the Restaurant Core, one would stroll through the Shopping area which would be developed as a "Bazaar," comprised of small shops and boutiques in tents, islands, or kiosks, all inviting browsing, and featuring activities such as artists and artisans creating the goods for sale. Specialty restaurants such as a "Mongolian Barbeque" (steak house); "The Marco Polo" (continental specialties); "The Flaming Sword" (flame specialties); "Forbidden City" (oriental cuisine); along with a Seaford Specialty Restaurant (will be complete with a giant aquarium-wall), complimented by a variety of cocktail lounges and bars located with the "Garden of Xanadu" and Casino Areas. Themes and moods such as "Samarkand," "Shalimar," "Cashmere," "Shangri-La" are envisioned, with a special intimacy, utilizing such elements as magnificently gilded desert tents, soft cushions and exotically costumed waitresses.

A Theatre Showroom, with a thrust stage of greater viewing and audience involvement will seat approximately 1500 persons with ease. The Lounge adjoins a new multi-purpose concept discotheque, which not only serves as a late hours "center of action," but as a Buffet and Cinema as well.

The Convention Center will seat in excess of 3000 people for a banquet, in addition to exhibit space in the Reception Hall. As part of this complex, Meeting Rooms of various sizes and potentials will also be provided.

These and all other areas and aspects of the Hotel and Casino, while meeting all the highest standards and functional requirements of this most modern and complete facility, shall be carried out in a theme of the imaginative, and make-believe dream world of XANADU.

 

In my opinion, the theme doesn’t matter as long as the resort can distinguish itself from the others in terms of an elevated experience for its customers. If the customers are treated well, the furnishings remain top notch, and there is something for them to do there (gambling, pool, events, great food, art….etc) RW will succeed. It’s all about the experience. I think the real mistake was opening the resort before all of its features were complete. It’s hard to wow someone when every third thing was either not open or not functioning correctly. I was there on its third day of operation and while the service I received was great, it was disappointing not to be be able to see or do everything the resort had to offer.

 

I was looking forward to see it but with such average reviews I'm not so sure now

 

I am still excited to visit - I've heard mixed reviews but am always ready to see and enjoy a new casino!

 

So? Am I Odd Girl Out here, or are there others who consider a casino's purported "theme" to be fairly far down on the priority list?

What I care about, as I (think I) said, fun gaming which is not a pocketbook dumpster, prompt drink service, paid or comp, food options, light entertainment would be nice, etc. ...

I won $250 at the Dragon and they closed the next week. Kinda blame myself for that one.

 

Nuggithed your winning at Lucky Dragon reminds me of a short stop at Blackbird casino in Sloan Iowa if memory serves me correctly. Wife and I are heading back to Omaha after a couple days at the Hard Rock casino in Sioux City. I was playing an Asian themed game and won a little over $900. We decided to head out. Went to the cashier to cash my ticket. Cashier looks at the TITO and says where did you win that! I pointed to the machine. She disappears for a minute and returns to tell me that she does not have enough cash in her drawer to pay me! WTF I am thinking. After she calls upstairs she tells me they are bringing her some more money.
Wife and I were just shaking our heads in amusement as they finally get me paid off! Probably took 20 minutes but it was quite the experience.

 

Does Aria have a theme? No. Is it easy to access by foot? Not really. Is it making money? I don't think so.

Resorts World's only saving grace may be access to the convention center.

 

I was excited to take a ride on the Nile riverboats at Luxor until I got on and realized that I was part of the theming. That was also the decade of the souvenir glass, always better when shaped like a pyramid or the Eiffel Tower.

 

I just watched a walkthrough video of RW (hope to see it in-person at the end of the month). I thought it looked clean and crisp. There is very subtle Asian themes throughout the casino, but definitely nothing that was alluded to during the early concept days.

 

MGM is a public company which has to disclose its profits. Aria, while buried in the City Center notes, pretty clearly makes plenty of money.

Their laggard, pre-pandemic, was Park MGM.

This is pretty easy to discern from your gaming offers as well - Aria comps compare to the Bellagio's, whereas Park MGM was offering comps like the Excalibur.

 

YOU GUYS NAILED THIS.

By the way there are only 3 restaurants open.


Breakfast place, diner and sushi joint.

The rest is a food court which most people seemed to like by overpriced as usual.
