Always a good idea to keep the home base will assessing that next move. As much as we think we know where we want to retire, we just can't approach that type of decision without some real-world experimentation. So we'll keep the casa for ____ (undefined span of time, but certainly not many years) as we kick the tires across various seasons and locations.

Lived there until I was 21 (5 years at UBC), then spent one year teaching secondary school in Prince George (500 miles north of Vancouver). Moved back to lower mainland, taught 33 more years in Burnaby. Have lived on the west side of Vancouver for the last 44 years. Retired 14 years ago. Now golfing and working with health organisations (committee work).

Born and reared in San Antonio, Texas. Spent a few years in California when hubs was in the Marines. Back to San Antonio and then moved to Rural small town Hill Country Texas. Retirement??? Hopefully keep our house here and winter here but summer somewhere cooler. My husband would be happy to move to Alaska permanently even for the winter. Not me. We have to compromise. I can't see living in a big city again. I love having little traffic and little crime. There is less to do but as you get older you don't care. We do have a good golf course (I don't play) A good fitness center they are adding on too, a very active senior citizen crowd. I wouldn't mind moving into our local senior gated community. They have lots of amenities etc, but the husband despises HOAs. sigh.

I've come close to straying a few times, but I'm firmly entrenched at this point.

I grew up in Southwest Virginia.
    I live in Southwest Virginia.
I will retire in Southwest Virginia...

I will sit by my lake, taking in all that is in front of me, and know it is my kingdom. These mountains are home.

Well, originally, it was Ely, NV (pop. 4000) but after I discovered that there is NO commercial transportation in/out of Ely, I looked at somewhere along the train tracks. (I-80)

Actually, my search (next month and I will be writing a TR) will be anywhere from Winnemucca (120 miles west) to Wells (50 miles east) of Elko.

Among the reasons (more in my retirement search TR) are:
1)There are train stations in Winnemucca and Elko, and one train a day going east and west (West to Reno, and East to Salt Lake City)
    2)No state income tax
3)At elevation, which could be a plus or a minus
    4)MUCH smaller population (20,000+)
5)Housing affordability (I can BUY a 3/2 for <$200K, the lowest by far of any place that I've ever found liveable)
6)Far enough from "attractive" gambling (large casinos), but close enough to it that I can go if I want to
7)Elko has a Wal-Mart and a Home Depot, so my son (should he decided to move with me) should have no problem finding employment.
8)It's close enough to the SF Bay Area and Las Vegas that should I need to go one short notice, I can.

So, as long that I drive through and don't see any signs that say "no dogs or Asians allowed", I'm probably good.

That’s awesome, please post a trip report, I’m super curious about this area. I love driving around in the desert and mountains and live these types of places.

Last year I drove from Vegas to Reno. Spent the night in Tonopah, went the more scenic western route from Tonopah to Tahoe. Went to Carson City. Man I had a blast.

I read a trip report from a guy who I think started out in like Laramie, WY. Went on I-80 and stopped in like everyone of those towns with a casino. West Wendover to Wells, Elko, Winnemucca, Battle Mountain through to Reno. Very cool.
