I'm sorry for your financial misfortune; but as someone who was attending UT at the time, I gotta say ... :D

2017...Downtown Grand sends me a Super Bowl offer, 3 nights plus SB party comped.

I arrive in Vegas Friday afternoon...after checking in I start drinking and low rolling ($5 BJ). Fast forward to 3am...I am hammered, fighting a dude in the middle of American Coney. Oh yea, I am also up $5000.

Over the course of 6-7 hours I played BJ at EC, GG and the Downtown Grand. I couldn’t lose.

After the little dust up at American Coney I make my way to DG to get some sleep. I awoke at 11am feeling like death. finally got moving around 1, had lunch and immediately returned to my room for more sleep.

Saturday afternoon turned in Sunday morning. I almost feel human again and start my day around 9am or about 5 hours before the SB party starts. Now, if you believe in omens, this is where it gets good. I walk out the front door of the DG and suddenly feel something wet on the top of my head...A bird just shit on me! I return to my room for a second shower.

I ate and drink at the party while enjoining the game knowing I had a large bankroll to have fun with later that night.

Fast forward to midnight...I have lost the entire 5k, as well as a another thousand to boot. The last $1500 was lost at the DG, playing $100 BJ. I think I lost 10 straight hands at one point. Bottom line... I blame the f’ing bird!

    Mike

So many beatdowns to choose from, but two stand out in my mind...

In my young days back in Jersey, after an all-nighter at Caesars with the boys, when we got to the gate in the parking garage - pay $5 to leave - not a single one of the 4 of us had any money left. Completely flat broke. I had lost the most and suggested we try my rewards card. Sure enough, my buddy put in the card, the gate went up, and we peeled out, leaving the card and that whole town in our rearview.

Much more recently, staying and playing at the Cosmopolitan, I went on a craps heater. Was up $10k (from a $2k buy-in) when I missed the 150:1 Make em All by a single number with $100 on it. Would have pushed me to +$25k. We stopped for an amazing dinner and many drinks at Beauty & Essex, before resuming the session. At the high point, I was up about $15k, playing $100 on the pass line with full odds, placing $100-500 on every number and $25-100 hard-ways. Then my wife went to bed. 2 hours later I joined her, exactly even for the day/night. Is it a beatdown if you have a great time and end up even? In this case, feels like yes.

That's a tricky one. It's either an omen that the night will suck or an omen that the night can't get any worse than have bird s*** on your head.

The only way to find out is to hit the tables.

OOF. I think we have an, er, winner? Was this an unhedged future bet for USC to win the championship or a straight bet?
I'm guessing the half hour during which the conversation you had with your daughter and/or other family members immediately following the game telling her about her change in college plans wasn't much better.

Really sorry to hear that, tempered ever so slightly by my personal distaste for Stanford as an alumnus of their rival across the bay. I hope she did ok at a UC school - she could have done worse - but I get that a Stanford degree would have been a pretty great ticket to life. For what it's worth, if you were set back an amount something like the first year of tuition, just maybe you might have saved money in the long run? You don't have to answer that if you don't want to.

Well, it wasn't quite that bad and I may have exaggerated a bit. It was a 25k bet on USC and I gave the points (may have been 3-4)—I thought they were a lock. In those days I routinely bet 5-10k on a day at the track.

As for my daughter, yes, she wanted to go to Stanford but she got rerouted to UC San Diego (I lost a lot of money at Del Mar during those four years) where she graduated with honors in the electrical engineering program. She now works for Intel—hence my move from Cali to Oregon. She now makes an obscene amount of money on her own so everything worked out. Maybe her daughter will go to Stanford.

And, by the way, one of my best friends went to Berkeley and I tend to root for them over Stanford any day.

2 years ago I had a $20 multi leg parlay miss be a single point because an otherwise 85% free throw shooter from Davidson went 1 for 2 from the line with under 10 seconds to play.

Not in Vegas- a few months back I had a $10 soccer parlay that was about to net 2k before Manchester United blew a 2 goal second half lead to Southampton, with the final goal coming on literally the last play of added time.

I was about to say the same thing. It really is relative, on my third-ever Vegas trip, when I was in college, I lost $200 and was devastated. 20 years later, I lost $800 the other night and shrugged it off. The most important thing is to be having fun and play with money you're expecting to lose, and then it's a nice bonus if you win.

A ton of online sportsbooks opened up in my state the last two months, and man has it been a gold mine. Except once.

I'm checking some MLB preseason games last week and see FanDuel has the Mariners to win against the Rockies at +188. Another app has the Rockies winning over the Mariners at +155. Throwing $1,000 on each line guarantees me a profit of at least $155, unless of course they tie, in which bets are returned.

Well they did tie... or so I thought. After 8 innings the Mariners are up 9 to 7. Rockies come out in the 9th inning and score two runs. They tie it up 9-9... and then the game suddenly ends. In the middle of an inning. With the score tied.

The book where I bet the Mariners called it a tie since the MLB official score was 9-9.

The book where I bet the Rockies called it a Mariners win, since as of the last COMPLETE inning the Mariners were ahead, and since Mariners did not get a chance for rebuttal in the bottom of the ninth, the ninth inning doesn't count.

So where I thought I had a lock in the truest sense of the word for $155, I wound up losing $1000!

The worst time I ever had in Vegas was a trip I took in 2000. At the time I had an ulcer on my cornea which would flare up from time to time. Whenever it would act up, and I would have no idea when it would, it felt like there were grains of sand in my eyes and exposure to any kind of light was brutal, and for the most part intolerable. By the time my flight landed and got checked into the Mirage it had flared up and I was about as miserable as miserable can be. I ended up staying in my room for three days and nights, blinds closed, ordering room service with absolutely nothing to do. Even watching TV was painful. On my last day I took a taxi to a drug store and got an eye patch and decided to go back to Mirage and try to make the most of it with only about 12 hours left in my trip from hell.

I had my entire trip BR at my disposal so I figured I’d hit up one of the $100 BJ games at Mirage. Bought in for $2k and lost 12 or so hands in a row including double downs and splits. On the last hand of that original $2k buy in I had a $200 bet out and had to go into my wallet to split 8s against either a 4, 5 or 6 - can’t recall exactly which card. Anyway, it ended up that I split the 8s three times and doubling down on each and of course caught crappy cards on all of my doubles, I caught an ace of two of my doubles on 11, and the dealer made her hand. I don’t think I’ve played at a black chip BJ game since then....the memory of that session still lingers.

By this time I was in complete steaming mode and blew through another couple of grand making nothing but prop bets at a craps table trying to win some of my losses back. I knew better and I felt like a total jackass for losing all my self control, and this bothered me much more than the money I lost at the craps table throwing good money after bad on the terrible prop bets. The BJ loss was bad luck, or variance; the craps loss was just sheer stupidity.

Lots of time for some serious soul searching on the flight home. In retrospect I’m thankful that all of that crap was consolidated into one trip.

When I first started going to casinos, I lost my entire bankroll a few times (which at the time was anywhere between $100-$500). But it was all money I was expecting to lose anyway, and I pretty much made it last the whole trip.

In other words, I've never had any serious beatdowns. I'm 99% of the time a flat bettor, and I never chase losses. If I'm losing badly I'm way more likely to either reduce my bet size considerably or just stop playing for a few hours or even the rest of the day.

I don't play enough to lose a bunch, but I have three examples.

The first was an employee that couldn't afford to lose a dime. He withdrew $2500 from savings acct without telling wife. He was in town to bowl a tournament. Got to The STRAT and he lost every dime before checking in. Couldn't happen to a nicer jerk!

A buddy that was a nutso gambler, was waiting to check into the MGM. He got on a BJ table and just kept winning. His friend checked with him after a while and was told he was up $4K. Way, way over his head. Friend goes to check in and comes back in 45 min. He's now told my buddy's down $1500. He says, "at least you're still up $2500." He told that he lost the $4K AND $1500!

This one's for SprintGravy. About 3-4 months later, same guy's out playing golf. Hops out of his cart on a given tee and promptly gets sprayed with a funny liquid. It's then determined by playing partners that not all pilots adhere to the law prohibiting dumping of human waste from said aircraft. Like they always say, some mornings it just doesn't pay to get out of you cart!

Ive had big wins and loses

    Notables

In NOLA, I would go to the table with $125 table play, lose and im done, win and im taking the chips and cashing out. walk to a roulette table and a friend is playing. I place my bet on the outside and get paid. well my friends playing so I kept playing and winning...I bet a few outside bets with $25 chips, made a nice stack off a few spins then switched to the inside to bet...well my friend loses his money and leaves, im still winning and intoxicated, he came back a while later and seen I had turned my $125 table play into $2,500, he tried several times to get me to leave...I did not, lol, they took every $25 chip back...while I didnt lose any of my own money, knowing I couldnt have left with theres stings a bit

my worst beating also in NOLA...over a 2 week period I had won a nice amount of money on roulette and a slot tournament. I was up a little over $40k in that 2 weeks so I had house money to play with...Id usually buy in for $1k-$2k in green chips each Thursday,Friday and Saturday unless I won a nice amount I wouldnt play the next day...so It was weird, for a few solid weeks, Id lose $2k right away, hitting just about nothing and then when I rebuy, I would make that money back plus some, but I always had to give $2k right away when I started...so im up over $40k, I go to the table and buy in for $2k and its gone like usual, rebuy and they take it quick, right around an hour and I lost $10k (I am not rich, just got lucky one time and won a bunch, lol)...that was all I had on me so I drank a bunch and partied to forget that day, lol...very next day, I can get it back. went to the table and maybe 2 hours this time, they took another $10k. after that I didnt gamble in NOLA till the next year.

Don't you hate when that happens? I've been told by dealers that they can't lose and for me not to play their table. Good advice. Sometimes the dealers are all on fire - that's when I change to slots or VP!

The same thing happened to my buddy playing high/low in college with A and a 2, he is thinking easy money for him with the big pot and then another A. He had to do the walk of shame to the ATM. We still talk about this epic beat down 20 years later.

I've lost the most money when invited to super bowl parties at Mirage years ago. BJ table minimums with good table rules were $300, which was really higher than I was/am comfortable with. Still - I played and never came out ahead. I remember a pit boss asked me what minimum I wanted and I said $100. She let me play it. Later an idiot came to the table and questioned why I was playing $100/hand because the minimums weren't that low anytime he was there. He huffed off when the dealer didn't give him any explanation! MYOB!

Had both sides of this. Worst losses happened last weekend. I have a gambling account that I keep around 75k in at any time. Last weekend after about 18 hours of play i had the following stats:

    Bellagio - <15,000>
    PHo - <10,000>
    TI - <5,000>
    Cromwell - <15,000>

That being said, the first weekend of January I took TI/PHo for $57,000.

Bad streaks happen and they really suck, but eventually it evens out. Doesn't make it feel any better at the time though.
