Smoking and drinking seem to just together in casinos. It's sort of like that is one of the few remaining social venues indoors where the two activities can be accepted in most cities. Even when there is a mall or office building where smoking is prohibited inside, there seems to always be an area that people must tolerate and navigate where smokers are allowed in order to get inside. Hopefully, The Park and possible other casino properties will not follow suit and place smoking areas adjacent to the entrances and common areas just outside of the properties. And I agree that the smokers who prefer alternative smoking may feel that their "hobby" isn't considered smoking per se. In hotel corridors, the stench of their smoke is so much more offensive than traditional smoke and somehow lingers and infiltrates each room through the ventilation system. I experienced this at CP recently, where smoking in rooms was prohibited, with an adjacent room's occupant who caused my clothes and sheets to reek just being next door. The properties must have a no tolerance mindset and monitor this regularly and consistently on each floor. High Rollers, Whales, etc. shouldn't be exempted and a SOP developed for dealing with the offenders.

Heavy gamblers aren't the average American with respect to smoking though.

But if a Vegas casino was going to do it, NOW is the time! Hope it goes well.

That first line is certainly apt. But the percentage who smoke in Vegas still far exceed the availability of nonsmoking facilities.

Happy to hear Park is reopening.

I rarely play there as slots there are not friendly to me, doesn’t have great slot machine choices imo. I wish Mlife had chosen a better candidate for the non smoking experiment. Selfishly, Mirage or Bellagio or any other casino would have a better chance of succeeding. Park has less chance of succeeding, not because of the non smoking experience, but because it’s not that great a casono to begin with in my biased opinion. But, I wish them well :D

That's probably why it was chosen.

I don't see it being anything but successful. They'll no doubt lose most or all of their previous smoking customers, but will gain a huge following of nonsmokers. Smoke doesn't bother me, but almost all of my nonsmoker friends sight that as the one thing they dislike about LV. If it's a success, will it spread up and down the strip? Not a chance. If it is, I can see CET trying it at one of their locations. Don't see it happening DT. Off strip no, but you might see large nonsmoking areas if this works.

My guess is that CET will be watching this closely. (Boyd, not so much, however.)

Not sure Mlife will even lose the smokers as they can go to any of their other casinos.
If it was Bellagio they might have more potential to lose some customers to Caesars or Wynn.

I agree. They still have the Cromwell and PH closed. Cromwell has a pretty small footprint, so although I think it's fits, it's too small. If PMGM works, I see PH going that way. Anything that's open, would have to close for a deep clean. Not so with PH. Pretty close to PMGM though. Sometimes that helps. Back in the ice age I ran a very restaurant/nightclub and one of our strong competitors was across the street. We drew bodies, they drew bodies and they went back and forth.

Kudos to the Park. I will maybe spend some time there on my next trip. The only time I spent in the Casino was when I was for the doors to open for the Queen concert. I'm not a smoker and when I use to stay at MB, I always looked for a BJ table where no one else was playing. I always asked to turn it into a non-smoking table. The dealers were always appreciative when I made the request.

Doesn't Drai's allow smoking? I wonder if that presents an issue with making that a nonsmoking hotel.

No vapes allowed now so not sure it would matter, also could see them allowing only at Drais since outdoors. Their agreement might not even let them ban at Drais.

The Cromwell is closed as of now and I'm sure that includes Drai's. If Park MGM is successful, I'm sure CET will follow with one of their properties. The Cromwell is very small and might come across as their token nonsmoking property. PH is good sized and has a good location.

Even if smokers are staying at Park MGM after the ban, they can take the indoor walkway to Aria or walk outside to NYNY and be at a smoking M Life casino within 5-10 mins.

As a former smoker, having quit long ago, I wouldn't want to go through all that. I would just choose a property that had smoking.

I suspect that PMGM is at least partially doing this because they want to stick out and draw clientele. With Aria, Bellagio, and Cosmo all within short distances from PMGM, the guests who are staying there are obviously not going there for the five star hotel experience and PMGM is not competing with them either. That being said, it seems they need to stick out and I believe I read reports before the pandemic that they were not doing well financially.

In any event, I think it’s a good idea to have a separate hotel and casino for non smokers as I believe that smokers don’t want to intentionally inconvenience non smokers and would welcome non smokers be in their own space cause hey who wants to be around people who are complaining and not having a good time when they are in Vegas.

Now, I don’t know if this is going to work out financially for the Casino although I think the hotel side may do ok. As others have pointed out the higher level gamblers are the ones who also tend to be smokers and drinkers, whether the casino side could survive without that clientele remains to be seen. Maybe if they disallow the 50 cent slot wager who loves their free drink, which I see everywhere but may be more reflective of the typical crowd they draw in anyways.

As a non smoker we found going to Caesars Windsor so refreshing. Michigan casinos are mostly nonsmoking now as Turtle Creek started 8/31. In Vegas I understand having smoking in most casinos but am glad to see one being 100% smoke free and hope Planet Hollywood follows suite.

In another article on the opening, I saw this quote:
Sounds like they've been doing a lot of work there.

Also, many of the properties have upgraded their HVAC systems to increase air flow and upgraded filters, etc. So they kind of do have air fresheners in the middle of the casino. :)
