Yes. :) I'm back today though. Yesterday I listened to and posted the task force meeting from beautiful I-5 north. :)

I don't really understand this either. I know the original person who brought it up was talking about sushi bars. But you need to adhere to all COVID mitigation rules for distancing, so how many people are you actually going to have at the sushi bar? It's a strange request.

When you go to a restaurant in vegas and there is a non-gambling bar where you could choose to eat at instead of a table (solo diner), is this a countertop? And if so are they currently closed due to the bar closures? Maybe?

Bar bars are closed. Non-bar restaurant dining could be open, maybe, but who knows? It's very strange.

It’s extra confusing because I’ve seen plenty of photos and videos of folks sitting at the counter at several different oyster bars since the bars closed. Were those operating illegally?

I got the feeling that they were going to approve countertops on an individual basis on this round given how they explained it. Possibly because its too difficult to define the countertops they will allow to operate?

It's a little puzzling. I spent some time trying to find the rationale/definition for the difference between a restaurant countertop and a bar countertop and I couldn't really find one, but there's just too many links to plow through to get the whole history. Any countertop would have to have some social distancing mitigation in place in order to operate.

I think what it comes down to is
    • They want to keep bars that don't serve food closed period because it's been shown that the patrons' behavior is different. Drinkin' bars are a different animal than restaurants that serve drinks. People don't just sit at tables at drinkin' bars, there's a lot of circulating in close proximity. They also know that the NGC can put the fear of god into the casino bars, but there's too many locals bars to cover via plain alcohol-license surveying.
    • They see that social distancing goes out the window at "bar bar" countertops - people walk up to the bar for a bunch of reasons
    • That's not likely to happen at a restaurant countertop - nobody elbows their way in to get another soup

Lake Tahoe video poker bars are open for business. Got a note from Harvey's yesterday.

Agreed. I'm all for precautions, but I don't understand why sitting at a table to eat is any different from sitting at a bar/counter. Even if they took half the seats out, that's still extra revenue, and you're no closer to the bartender than the server is to you when they bring you your food. I don't personally have a problem with sitting at a table alone, but I like the interaction that comes with bar/counter-top seating. Bar-bars are a different story in terms of crowding, and I don't mind the restriction that you have to be seated and order from a server, but arguably that's no different than sitting at a counter.

EDIT: I was at Aria last night and unfortunately not paying attention to this, but as of a few days ago, bartops at non-gaming restaurants still had their seats removed, and several restaurants on the website say "Bartop seating not available"

Sorry, I read the title and this came to mind: Clark Bars.

Go back to your regular scheduled program.

There was a Mitigation Task Force meeting today. In a surprise, they addressed opening bars in some of the counties that were not originally to be reconsidered until next week.

The Task Force voted to reopen bars/distilleries/wineries/etc in Washoe County by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The Task Force voted to approve Nye County's action plan, which will allow bars in Pahrump to open at 11:59 p.m. tonight.

However, Clark County still is too high on two of the criteria for reopening (cases and test positivity rate).

Caleb Cage says about Clark County: A case rate of 489 and a positivity rate of 11.2%. He says those numbers are "vastly different" than those in Washoe and Nye counties. He says Clark is moving in the right direction but not close to achieving success.

Department of Business and Industry Director Terry Reynolds said that he thinks the move to open bars in Clark County is "too premature."

Cage, again clearly opposed: "It was literally four weeks ago when our hospitals were at surge capacity or at capacity in Las Vegas ... I think there is a ways to go, strictly speaking, with numbers."

Kyra Morgan, state biostatistician, notes that Clark County is testing sufficiently AND still has a high test positivity rate. She says it "really does imply that they have a lot of disease in the community that hasn't been potentially diagnosed."

Bars in Clark County are NOT yet approved to open.

Some members seemed willing to consider letting smaller towns (Laughlin, Boulder City, and Mesquite) open bars before the rest of Clark County. But no bars in Clark County are opening at this time.

Here is an article on the meeting.

One problem they've having in Clark County is that they were going to try to do 60,000 tests in 2 weeks to try to drive the rates down and they're only on track to do half as many. They can't get enough people to show up.

A lot of people probably get tested when they return home. For your average person living in Vegas that doesn’t frequent crowded places like the strip the risk of getting it isn’t that high so most don’t bother. Just my guess of course.
