(Mods, if this is too sensitive of a topic, please delete)

The first visitors started arriving back in Vegas on June 3, so it's been almost 2 weeks. According to the WHO:
The incubation period for COVID-19, which is the time between exposure to the virus (becoming infected) and symptom onset, is on average 5-6 days, however can be up to 14 days.

My question, if you started developing symptoms or get sick after returning home, would you also post that in your TR, or here on the site? OR have you heard of anyone being sick after getting home from Vegas? I really hope and pray that no one I know, or anyone really, came home from Vegas and ended up sick. However, if I see that a lot of people are coming home sick, that would definitely sway some of the decisions on my trip.

I doubt anyone would post that here. Perhaps on Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Was there opening day and I'm good as of now. I also barely wore a mask if that helps.

The sample size of this board is fairly small to be making any evaluation.
Some could be infected and not know as symptoms can be little to none.
If I went to LV and became infected I'd have trouble pinning it on LV. How would I know it wasn't from the flight or Uber/Lyft
    to the airport?
If there are larger clusters and wider spread we'll possibly hear about it from news outlets. If a family/group drove in from California and all became infected it might be easier to pinpoint.
    I would probably post it.
    This thread is probably doomed...:)

I don't know what information you're hoping to get here, other than I would/wouldn't report it in my TR.

You're probably going to get a lot of anti-mask people proclaiming Vegas is safe because they aren't sick and didn't wear a mask. You'll also probably get some lectures from the other side about how if you're concerned, you shouldn't go. I agree that the number of people from VMB who have been back in Vegas is much too small a sample size to make any reasonable assessment of the rate of infection in Las Vegas Casinos. Even if everyone went back, it's not a large enough sample size.

We also may never know that information because of how the virus works. It can often take 5-14 days before people show symptoms. There have been cases where it took longer. If an average trip is 3-4 nights, most infected people would be back home before showing any symptoms, and they would not be considered "Nevada cases" because they tested positive in their home state.

The virus is in Las Vegas. Guests tend not to be universally wearing masks. They also seem to have mixed feelings about social distancing. That means there is a risk you will be exposed and the practices in the casino currently increase that risk by not enforcing the two tools we have to reduce it. That doesn't mean it's 100% you will get sick, but the risk is there. However, the risk is everywhere. There are things you can do to make your trip more safe, which I've mentioned elsewhere.

My worst nightmare is someone headed back to Vegas because they saw something here that convinced them "it's fine" when it's not fine. I want everyone to be safe and healthy. But yet, I'm still not Queen of the Universe, so nobody is listening to this tired, old housewife. :)

    Too many variables.

There are reports nationally about increased numbers in some regions. The thorough, responsible outlets go on to say "no way of knowing if increased numbers reflect increased testing or increased incidence. Other outlets say exactly the right words to pander to their audience.

Unless there's some domed control environment somewhere, with 100% contact-tracing of all ins and outs.... theres no fully reliable way to associate reported numbers with safety from exposure.

We live in uncertain times. Did we ever live in certain times?

Only certainties I can recall are...

    Le Thai is always good.

That 'one more' drink always did far too much damage.

Sleeping on the bathroom floor is never a good idea.

True - but some data points help you make that decision, even if using your gut.

Yes, this group is but a small portion of Vegas, but they do have some valuable feedback. I would think some folks might most their experience that will offer just a bit of information to others. Right now we have no idea if lots of people are picking up C-19, or none.

So, if you had a trip scheduled for the end of June, would you even go? It sounds like you aren't ready.

We've been back and forth on this decision and have decided to cancel our trip. We talked about it and decided it wouldn't a fun or relaxing vacation...especially since we can't drink on a 4-hour flight, we can't stay at our favorite hotel (The Mirage isn't open until mid-July), and we aren't interested at the prospect of waiting in line everywhere...or being around groups of people, in general. We thought about revisiting for end of July.

No, I wouldn't. There are a couple reasons why. Mainly, I have a number of co-morbidities that make me getting COVID-19 an issue. I am extremely high risk for death if I catch it. Literally every medical person I have seen since February has spent time to tell me why I should absolutely not get this virus. Even when I was in the hospital for my surgery in March, nurses were talking about the difficulty controlling my blood sugars on steroids and how that's what they are treating COVID with in the ICU, so I need to be careful.

However, if I didn't have these health issues, would I be going right now? Probably not. It's really early in the opening for us to know anything about actual transmission rates in the casinos. What we do know about the virus and seeing the lack of enforcement of mask usage in several of the casinos makes it a risky venture, unless you take precautions to avoid crowds of people. I could go if I spent the majority of time in my room, outside at the pool, or out hiking and exploring the desert (probably not a great idea for July/Aug :haha:). I could gamble, but only for limited periods of time when/where I could distance myself from people outside my household. Since I usually go solo, that means solo gaming. Typically I'll grind VP and people watch in the evenings when the crowds are getting ready to head out. That's not likely to happen right now, given what I know about crowds indoors.

I would certainly be tempted if it was easier for me to get to Vegas (ie, I was somewhere I could drive there in a day) and didn't require extra hotel nights or an airplane. I might be considering something for after the summer heat, and then it would be a much different looking trip for me. Less casino time, no meet ups, more room time, more outdoor exploration time. I'm not entirely sure that's a "Vegas trip" as I would categorize it. I could do that elsewhere and spend less money and have fewer crowds. But the itch to get back to Vegas is there. :)

Oh, I can absolutely relate. :wink2:

I agree with you. It's not the same and if my vacation is going to be spent worrying about not catching something or how other people act around me, I may as well stay home for that! :)

I especially don't want to go somewhere and be around someone with underlying conditions like you who decided to take a chance and get out and then end up catching it from me. I'd feel horrible.

At least I know I was looking at canceling this trip for the right reasons. Thanks for your view!

The problem for Vegas is that it doesn't have to be definitively pinned on Vegas or a specific hotel/casino to hurt Vegas.

You fly to Vegas and get diagnosed while in Vegas. One of the following is true:
    • You had it before you left
    • You got it on the plane on the way
    • You got it in Vegas
All three of those scenarios are bad for Vegas, the last one probably being the worst optics-wise

You get diagnosed within 2 weeks of getting home. One of the following is true:
    • You got it on a plane going or coming back
    • You got it in Vegas
    • You got it after you got home
Two of those scenarios are bad for Vegas.

Having been in Vegas within 2 weeks of being diagnosed becomes an issue for Vegas, whether you can pin it on Vegas or not. If Vegas is in the list of possibilities, it's bad. And that info will get out. Same is true for any other destination, Vegas will just probably get more publicity than a lot of others.

And it's going to take way more than 2 weeks to determine what the full outcome of reopening is.

With this being the central question, I'll answer it directly and say yes, I would post it in my TR/here on the site. I can understand why many would have hesitations towards reporting such a thing... and admittedly I would hesitate a bit to do so myself because I don't want to cause or contribute to any possibly undue "FUD" (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) around going to Vegas, since my report would likely be one of only a few positive reports from those who "dared" to share such a thing.

Ultimately, I believe that at a time like this sharing real-time information is generally a good thing... however because this is a casual discussion board and not something more formal/clinical, such real-time information can be misinterpreted or taken out of context leading to a bad outcome. For instance, say I return from Vegas and develop symptoms and test positive. Many people might conclude "NFC went to Vegas and got COVID-19, therefore Vegas isn't safe", since that's the surface appearance. But what if I got it before I left for Vegas? What if my inbound flight had a stopover in a faraway city like Charlotte and I got it at the airport there? What if I got it from the Lyft driver who took me home from the Toronto airport?

My point in saying the above is that relying on "I went to Vegas and I got / did not get COVID-19" type anecdotes is extremely unreliable as a matter of logic. But as a matter of comfort, it's a whole other story. If I read TRs from people who went to Vegas since it re-opened and two weeks later they reported they were fine or that they even got tested and it came up negative... even reading five or ten such reports is going to make me feel a lot more comfortable for the simple reason that I can directly relate to that person's scenario. Macro-level data like "Nevada has X amount of cases" doesn't tell me a whole lot... but "A, B, C, D, and E went to Vegas and did not catch it" is more likely to make me feel confident about it (or conversely, confident about not going if they DID catch it) since the motions that I'd be going through in my trip would be unlikely to differ that much, thus giving me confidence based on a pattern of other Vegas travellers enjoying their trips about issue.

So to round that off... this is a perfectly reasonable question to ask IMO solely as a matter of comfort. I think it could be useful for feeling better about your decision one way or another, but not necessarily for making the actual decision itself, if that makes any sense. Either way, just as reporting "I went to Vegas and did not get COVID-19" is important for fuelling confidence, I believe that those who did not have such a good fortune (whether they became positive from Vegas or elsewhere) have a corresponding duty to report their outcome accordingly so that the confidence from the negative cases is balanced with the appropriate amount of caution.

I know you're saying that in jest, but just quoting to emphasize that speaking for myself, I can say this isn't true at all :)

Information is good. It's what is done with it that can cause a breakdown. Plenty of good inputs can get mashed when the processor has an agenda.

I believe the science. Others can choose -- and obviously do -- not to. We're starting up with travel again. We're choosing our destination(s) based on factors important to us: scenery, greater likelihood of limited numbers of people, with outdoor activities we enjoy that offer little to no chance of exposure, and locales that are taking seriously the call for masks, diminished density and physical distancing. And a place that won't take us eons to get to via car.

So as the great Scotsman wrote, "The mountains are calling and [we] must go."

We all have a checklist or better yet a matrix of travel. Hopefully all can find at this time what works for them.
