I was in the convoy, sort of like an exodus. We kept hearing scuttlebutt about 18 dollar gas in Iowa but it wasn't true. I bought a 12v inverter in Anaheim to keep our phones charged on the way home and it was a good move. To this day I travel with a car charger for my phone fully planning to drive home from where ever I am. The boy scout in me.

My wife and I make it a point to have a drink at the small bar outside of the Flamingo poker room and watch people on the sidewalk. We were out there one night and saw helicopters and parachutes. Bartender told us they were filming a movie. Found out later it was Hangover 3. Didn't get in any shots but it was fun to watch.

I live in NJ, on my way home I passed a gas station charging $6 a gallon. The next day the governor said any gas station gouging customers had until the end of the day to bring the price back to what it was on 9/10 or face criminal charges. Needless to say that gas station when back to the regular price, and I boycotted them.

I was there when the October 2017 tragedy happened. Oddly enough, my reservation was for 4 nights at MaBay, but I changed to Bellagio about a week before I arrived.

Gone from Golden Gate (their original deli / shrimp cocktail spot a bigger loss), but you can still get your Du-Pars at SunCoast, a 20 minute drive or 30 minute WAX ride from beautiful Downtown Las Vegas.

I honestly thought both locations were gone. Thanks for letting me know. Might be the deciding factor in going back to Vegas this year....

I too was in LV shortly after 9/11. The plans were in place long before. I was taking my Mother with me - this turned out to be her last trip to Vegas. Mom was apprehensive, but I wasn't worried. It was about a week afterward, and the airlines were just getting back into operational mode. I remember driving down a nearly empty LV Blvd at 10:30 on a Saturday night. It was eerie. The upside was no crowds, no lines, no traffic, easy restaurant reservations. I took my Mom to see Wayne Newton at the Stardust.

After we had boarded the plane for the return flight, the pilot announced over the intercom that someone had checked bags for the flight but had not boarded the plane, and that we would have to wait for the baggage handlers to find and removed that baggage. (My guess was that some drunk asshat had passed out on the shitter after checking in). Then the pilot said that anyone who was uncomfortable with the situation could choose to deplane, but if that happened then the remaining passengers would have to wait for that baggage to be removed too. Of course, this triggered near panic among a lot of the passengers (lots of "Oh My Gods", and women hyper-ventilating), but thankfully nobody elected to get off, so the delay wasn't too bad.

I wasn't there during any Vegas iconic moments. I did see some interesting things like filming of scenes from Hangover 3. I saw them film the scene were the characters is parachuting over the Bellagio fountains and gets blasted by the fountain. The next night they were filming Chow parachuting from the suite at Caesar's. I'm told they were also filming Last Vegas during the same time as Hangover 3 so a lot of movie stars were in town.

I was in Vegas about 6 weeks after the shooting. I arrived the night of the Rock'n'Roll Marathon. It was very interesting to see the strip closed down for this event, and to see all the security up and down the street. Really made me wonder if it was always that "secure" before the shooting.

Not Vegas related, but I was attending a conference at The Bellagio when Disney bought Star Wars from George Lucas.

We flew out of Vegas just a few hours before the 2017 shooting. Our flight landed after 1am, super tired went right to bed without checking any news. Our family didn't know our exact travel plans and when we woke up in the morning we had dozens of messages and missed calls from everyone checking on us. We now make sure we tell the family our travel plans. I remember thinking back at all the people we met during our stay that were likely there for the concert all decked out in their country gear and wondering if any of them were hurt.

I was also involved in a shooting at Potowatomi casino in Milwaukee, WI a few years ago. A man pulled a gun in the high limit room I was playing blackjack in and started shooting at the man sitting next to me. He said all you MFers are gonna die today so you better run. Had to make the decision to stay hidden or run so we ran and luckily no one was hurt. Very surreal feeling, you never think its going to happen to you. I've been in casino's when the power goes out, when fights break out, etc. But I've NEVER seen an entire casino run in 1 direction and just abandon all their money in machines, on tables, etc. Chips flying, people screaming, everything seems like its in slow motion. I had to wait outside in the cold for hours, all my belongings were inside. Then had several more hours being interviewed by detectives. Now here is the crazy part, somehow by instinct (from decades of playing blackjack) when I hit the ground to hide I also grabbed the majority of my chips, around $300. Well when I was finally told I could go home the casino had been forced closed, they wouldn't let me cash in my chips. They said we will reopen in 4 hours or so, you can come back then. I was only in town for work and leaving the next day. So the next day I came in, still shell shocked, to redeem my chips. The casino was just going on like nothing ever happened. It felt so strange, I said to the cashier, these are from last night, I was invloved in the shooting. She just looks at me like she could care less and hands me my money. I never got ANY compensation, letter of appology, not a thing from the casino other than the $50 that was left on the table in play during my hand that they sent me a check for. Umm hello, I almost died in your casino, you can't hook a girl up with a free buffet??? Thought that was very strange.

I should write this shit down. Too many trips, I guess.

We were there for one of those earthquakes, as someone else mentioned.
Did a couple of the NBA Thugfest things.
We had a power-failure NYE at Rio.
I know I'm missing something that's probably actually significant.

Riding is of a bit more recent vintage than the heyday of our Vegas days. Now alcohol ...
