It is my experience that in Vegas all buy craps buy bets on the 10 and 4 have the vig paid only if it hits. So it is about half the house edge of that in Reno or Tahoe where you have to pay the vig up front.

That said, all the places in Vegas I know of require $1 vig on a $20 to $25 bet on the 10 and 4. But I recall that some places allow you to press the bet up to $35 on the 4 and 10 with $1 vig. And I have heard some other places allow you to make a $70 with a two dollar vig.

Does anyone know which places allow a $35 bet on the 10 and 4 with a dollar vig only it if hits? How about $70 with a two dollar vig?

I don't know the granular answer to your question, but $70 should be a 3 dollar vig, not $2. The idea is they're holding $5 out of every hundred.

OK, I'm learning craps but there seems to be a lot of knowledgeable folks on this site. What is the difference between placing the number and buying the number? Also, I saw on my local someone not playing the pass line but just putting up an odds bet, is this allowed (obviously it is at my local)? I thought you had to have a passline bet out to play odds. Forgive my lack of knowledge.

Placing the 4 or 10 (for the normal increment of $20) has a min house edge of 6.67%; Buying those numbers where there is the vig paid only upon a winning bet is a house edge of 1.67%.

I have never seen a casino allow one to make an odds bet without making a line bet.

I thinking he is talking about “placing “ the point where after the come out roll you put a bet that straddles the outside of pass line. When you do this you are making a bet on whatever the point is.

Is that not the same as taking odds?

Edit to add: Now that I read what you said a little closer, he did straddle the pass line. So is this just then a straight 1:1 payout if the point is hit?

No because it pays like a place bet so if the point is 5/9 and you place the point for $10 and it wins then you are paid $14(7:5). They don’t pay you true odds which would be $15(3:2) because they would go broke over time because there is no house advantage on the odds.
The house only pays true odds if you have a pass line bet which does have a house advantage.

@StrikeToWin Just to further clarify, depending on the point, you have the following payouts on such a straddle:

    1. For the point of 4 and 10, payout is 2:1.
    2. For the point of 5 and 9, payout is 7:5; and
    3. For the point of 6 and 8, payout is 7:6.

A good dealer will actually help you set up your chips on a straddle (in the correct amount); a less than helpful dealer will just let you place a late passline bet which will pay only 1:1.

Well, I have seen a table where I could make a $70 buy bet with only a $2 vig. But it may have been a place where I had to pay the vig up front.

@FABismonte Is correct except on the 4/10 it pays 9:5 unless it’s over $20 and then it pays 39:20(which is $40(2:1)minus $1(5%)vig)

Thanks guys. So I guess my next question would be, do I have the option of taking this straddle bet down if I choose to do so like I can take an odds bet or place bet down?

Yes, it’s the same as a place bet which are not contract bets and can be taken down at any time.

The house edge would actually be one third as much if you only pay the vig on a win, since you will only win one third of the bets. This is what makes place bets on the 2 and 12 such a great deal in crapless craps. You're only winning 1/7 of your bets, so the vig and house edge drop accordingly if you only pay on a win.

To be clear, the "straddle bet" to which you refer is merely a place bet on the point; it's not actually called a Straddle Bet. You place it on the edge of the pass line to differentiate it from a pass line bet.

Only ask for a straddle bet if you're playing 'Stump the Dealer.'

So, for the sake of clarity, if I want to buy the 4 and 10 on a $10 table, I need to bet $11? How much do I win?

I've personally never seen a casino let you buy for less then 20 and it pays 2 to 1

I have never paid a vig on the 4 and 10 on a placebet (on the strip) under $40. Always paid the vig when I hit and press.

What vig do they charge on a $40 bet?

$1 dollar for every $20. After the number hits.

An extra $1 for every press of $20.
