So a friend of mine is going to Vegas for the Superbowl, and she lost her DL this past weekend. She doesn't have a passport or state ID card.

Illinois no longer gives you a DL or ID card at the DMV, rather you have to wait for it to be mailed to you.

If she doesn't get her license in time, will she be ok with "a DMV paper with my picture on it"? She is in her 20s and get carded frequently at bars and on the casino floor...

I hope this link helps...... But I would think temporary Identification will not have the same clout as the official document. I would talk to someone in the Nevada State Government for clarification. Better to be safe than sorry.

Tell her to expect delays and to have that paper with her picture on it ready for inspection. Especially if she's flying and definitely if she's playing at Vegas casinos and/or ordering alcoholic beverages. She still has time to apply at DMV and may very well receive her ID in the mail before the Superbowl.
Doesn't usually take more than 10 business days.

Yah I'd be more worried about TSA. Even though real ID compliance hasn't kicked in yet, they do still have a requirement for ID issued by state or a few other things, none of which would necessarily include a receipt or temporary paper ID.

I've never dealt with a situation like this firsthand so this is probably only marginally useful at best, but I'll say it anyway... could you not get in touch with someone from the Illinois DMV to arrange an in-person pickup in consideration of existing travel plans which rely on having that ID?

It seems the cause of anxiety here is the amount of time that mailing the ID will take, and the ability to pick it up in person would alleviate that.

I would be surprised if there isn't a workaround of some kind... after all, not everybody who has a driver's license can receive mail (e.g. say they're homeless or living in a shelter). So I'd push for something like that... it can't hurt.

I have some recent experience with this. She should expect delays absolutely everywhere, and a lot of bars will turn her away. No surprises there. BUT, most players clubs on the strip scan your drivers license when you sign up. She won't be able to redeem comps, but if the license they have on file is still valid, she'll be able to gamble with minimal hassle.

@notfromconcentrate I don't know about Illinois, but that's definitely not possible in California. They're printed at a special facility and receiving them takes however long it takes. Believe me, I tried.

does she have her expired ID? Maybe she can show them the old ID along with the paper ID. Yeah, it will be hard without the actual plastic ID.

She will have a serious problem with TSA without her ID. You didn't say if she had to go through TSA or not.

With a handful of "stuff", she will get through TSA. You can fly without an ID.

Getting drinks is another story. And if she hits a jackpot... good luck...

This was in 2013, I lost my wallet and ID in Vegas. I was able to get through TSA and make my flight home. It was a weird process though. The asked me a lot of questions to confirm my identity. Grandmother's maiden name, where was my dad born, etc. Then when I passed that test I got a thorough pat down and all of my clothing in my carry-on was searched heavily. Definitely will need a bunch of cash because a lot of the casinos won't take a credit card without an ID.

I wouldn't live in a state where you couldn't go down to the DMV and get another license while you wait. No excuse for Illinois or California and any other state. Here in Florida just show up and pay a few bucks for another one.

Because of Real ID and other new requirements, most states have had to go to central production facilities. If your state doesn't do it, you won't be able to fly starting at the end of October.

She should have plenty of time to get a DL or state ID card.
    She will need it. period.

TSA won't be a problem. An annoyance, most likely, but she'll be allowed to travel. A jackpot won't really be a problem either, she'll just probably get stuck with backup withholding that she can get back later if needed. However...

Gambling itself is probably a no-go. NGCB has been cracking down lately on carding. I can tell you for sure that many places on the Strip will just not let you gamble if you can't produce valid ID. And unlike travel, where that's a constitutional right in the US, you have absolutely no right to be able to gamble in a casino (especially in NV, where they can turn you away for any reason). Wish I could be the bearer of better news, but I would tell your friend to assume she won't be permitted to drink, gamble, or be in a 21+ area (including the sportsbook or a bar).

This right here is a poster child for having a passport or passport card. Either side of $100. Tell me, again, why that's not a good idea?

Especially because, if you have or are getting a passport anyway, a passport card is only another $30. Given the 10-year expiration, that's $3/year. Highly worth it to have a backup, federally-recognized ID.

It reminds me a little of my ex, who refused to get Global Entry because she "doesn't travel abroad that often", so just got TSA Pre, which is only $15 cheaper (and, for 5 years, again, $3/year extra). Then she got stuck in a two-hour line coming back from Europe.

FWIW, I live in Florida and just renewed my Real ID online and got it in the mail within five days (just mentioning this to provide the OP with a little hope that all is not necessarily lost). It may take longer in Illinois but it's definitely worth a shot; SB weekend is still a good 10-12 days away - depending on when you leave. Good luck, hope it works out for your friend.

Based on the post above (#19) you may already live in a state where you can not just go in and get one. (I am not 100% sure of course)
