I’m always pleased to still be in a tournament when dinner break comes along, but then comes the question of what and where to eat in the allotted time.

I had a nice run at the Senior Poker Tour event at the Orleans a few years ago. In the hand before dinner break, after being card dead forever, I finally got a premium hand that took what seemed an eternity to complete. A relaxing, sit-down meal was out of the question, so I wolfed down an unsatisfying Subway sandwich.

What do you do if you don’t have someone there to get a seat in a nearby eatery and order for you?

I've never been in your exact situation before, but since you'll already know what time the dinner break is, why not make a reservation at your eatery of choice in advance for that exact time? Or if they won't give you a table, perhaps find a bartender who's working around then and slip them $5 to hold a bar seat for you at that time. Or if time is really an issue, perhaps pre-order and pay for what you want to eat right before the tournament starts, and have them enter the order five minutes before then. I've done many versions of this in foodservice myself; talk to the right person and take good care of them, and you can bypass having to go through the motions which time may not allow for.

Another alternative, through a food ordering app (whether that's UberEats/GrubHub/etc., or a "direct" app like the Domino's app), you can definitely "time" your order and just tell them to come to the Orleans valet. So if the tournament starts at 5:00 pm and the dinner break is at 7:00 pm, order it to come for 7:10 pm or so, so that you can be out there waiting to collect your food.

Of course, this effectively commits you to such an arrangement regardless of whether or not you're still in the tournament by the time dinner break rolls around. So you'll have to make a decision you can live with in either scenario. But you can weigh that when making your advance arrangements; best case you get exactly what you want to keep you going while you continue the tournament, worst case you'll have dinner sorted out if you've been eliminated from the tournament and it's one less thing to think about when making a plan for the rest of the night.

I usually only want a snack of some description when I'm playing, even on the rare occasions I make the dinner break.

I usually get a Strawberry & Banana smoothie from, with a couple extra scoops of protein in it.

Do what works for you to get a little break. If you're there with a friend, maybe they can get a dinner table/spot in line to somewhere a little better, or they can get you a takeout order.

If you're alone, there's no sin in calling in a takeout order 20 minutes before the break. There's plenty of places to sit and relax in a giant casino.

When I am playing in a tournament my big meal of the day is breakfast. A salad for lunch is my most common choice before the tournament starts with a few energy bars for snacks during breaks. Dinner will just be what my poker buddies and I call "intake", whatever is quick and easy with all nearby options scouted beforehand.

I think you have to play your hands as they are dealt. The alternative to taking your time and wolfing down a sub from subway is to fold a great hand and enjoy a proper dinner. You chose wisely.
