Why not Double Down on a 6:5 natural?

I’m sure at least one math person can analyze this.

Why not gamble on doubling your bet instead of accepting 6:5?

I guess the first argument against is that it’s no different from splitting 10’s.

Just trying to think outside the box.

No math guru here, butlike you said with splitting 10s. You're taking a sure win and making it a maybe with more money at risk....

    Pretty much this.

When you have a guaranteed 1.2 unit win you have to win the double down 80% of the time to match that value.

    (0.8)(2) - (0.2)(2) = 1.2 units.

And when doubling down, A-5 gives you a hand where the dealer has to bust for the player to win.

I’ve done it at a couple different spots back in the day. It was great when it hit! I see your thinking though, and if you’re willing to take that extra risk when the count is going well go for it!

casinos generally won't let you, but you shouldn't do it anyway - the EV is horrendous

I’ve seen it done at planet. If you have table minimum out and playing for fun it’s fine I suppose. It gets everyone pumped if it hits

Anybody who is playing 6/5 probably has no idea what EV is anyway....

Or perhaps they know that the EV they’re giving up is minuscule compared to the time/$ cost of traveling to where 3:2 tables are available at the level they’re willing to play.

Don't play 6:5 but looked into the math of this a few years ago -and as noted above it is not a good percentage play at all, Really comes down to the fact that the blackjack is a sure win - even if the dealer draws to a non-blackjack 21.

Reminded me of one time when I was playing at local casino and a guy doubled on a blackjack on a 3:2 table. Tried to tell me it was a smart play - and then got mad at me when I hit my 12 vs. a dealer 2.

These types will just grind their teeth when they get their $12 BJ. :evillaugh: They won't double it.

Pretty sure any casino will let you double down on a natural. They're in the take your money business, after all.

I wonder if someone has the math on how far the count has to be in your favor to make it a considerable option.

Numerous 6:5 $25 blackjack tables fully seated at Caesars, Venetian, Bellagio during Christmas.... I couldn't believe my eyes.

I realize it's all stupid. The bastardization of Blackjack i.e., the attempts by the casino to turn the staple table game of gambling into a carney game have so totally turned me off that I seriously doubt I will ever play it again. Even the venerable El Cortez has introduced the carnival side bets.

Just one of the top 10 reasons why I believe I have reached the end of my Vegas quest.

Valid point - I should have said “most folks” instead of “anybody.” But I still hate to see anybody playing 6/5...:peace:

Thing is, now people like me can’t play anymore. It’s accept the carnival rules or do without.
    I’m leaning toward “do without.”

Instead of worrying about this or analyzing it, just go to TI and play $10 BJ at 3-2. It smells a bit smoky in there but the place is generally clean and the Luke's Lobster next door sells one of the best tasting lobster rolls I've had outside of Maine.

Thanks for reminding me of TI, one of the last bastions of sanity.

I LIKE the side bets, because they allow casinos to make more money while offering a full 3:2 blackjack game at a reasonable limit. If other people want to keep the lights on by betting 21+3 EXTREME at a $10 or $15 table, hey, that's fine by me.
