To an extent, I agree. I think his earlier films had more of a message. But I haven't liked his films as much since probably Melancholia. I really liked his earlier work, though.

I agree Taste of Cherry is a very polarizing film, and understand your reaction. I did walk out his film released after his death, and experimental piece (24 frames). Shirin is another example of a film I love but can see how others can be bored and hate it.

How do you get exposure to this broad range of foreign films in Tennessee, home or an independent theatre? Vegas is a disappointing film town, I've been fortunate a few great independent theatres remain open in Chicago (several have closed over the decades), and can find films free on the internet as well. I'm typically fine watching films at home, but for a film like The Irishman, I'd prefer to watch on screen.

STL Guy, I was a big fan Tarantino's early work, but wasn't interested in any of his films other than his last after Kill Bill I and II. Part of that may be chalked up how my interests have changed over time. I also agree about films being subjective, there are films which are clearly outstanding or excruciating, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Studied film in school a couple decades ago. After that, I was a film snob for a while. Now, just a film enthusiast. Actually, I don't watch much of what comes out any more. Probably why my list tends toward older or dead directors. Nashville has had one very good art house theater for the past couple decades. It also has a decent film festival each year. back in my nerdier/snobier days, i would seek that stuff out when I traveled. Probably my favorite film experience was watching a film in actual Cinerama in Seattle sixteen years ago (strangely, it was the week after my first ever visit to Vegas). The film was meh, but the experience was amazing. Sorry Imax fans, but Cinerama just blows that format away

I think this will be the 6th or 7th time De Niro and Pesci have worked together. Four of those movies were stone cold classics:

    Goodfellas
    Casino
    Raging Bull
Once Upon a Time in America

Hoping this movie will be # 5.

I forgot about that one. A Bronx Tale was a pretty good flick too.

Good directors list @UKFanatic, I like it. The only substitute I would make is to make room for Billy Wilder somewhere.

Just bought my ticket to see The Irishman TONIGHT at the Belasco Theater!! :woohoo: I was out and about in Manhattan and need to clean my apartment, etc., etc., have work to do, etc., etc. and said screw it, looked up where it was showing and saw the Belasco. It is an historic theater on Broadway and the showing of The Irishman is the first time a movie will be shown at the theater in its 112-year history.

Now I just need to find a place for a good meal and use the restroom just before as 3 hours and 30 minutes is a stretch!!

Thanks @MikeOPensacola and @Marky147. Don't want to hijack the thread and turn it into a foodie but I feel like my meal is thematic, other than the Moscow Mule. But the salad, petite filet, great red wine, etc. feel right. I so have a buzz now. Lol.

Lol. There is a Joe Pesci poster as well. His I believe says "The Quiet One." Will try and get a photo of that as well.

Oh man, I am truly tired as I had minimal sleep last night plus a big meal, a cocktail and wine. I need coffee. Will skip dessert. I bought some candy corn on sale around the corner and will munch on that ("quiet food") during the movie and will remember to cut my phones OFF. Some guy you know is going to leave his on and it will ring during the movie and this audience will do God knows what to him/her.

I learned from the teller at the will call window that the movie tonight was officially sold out but as a regular theater/movie/dance/music performance attendee, I know with even "sold out" shows there can still be good single seats remaining.

I'm so jealous, Flowers! Not showing in the Atlanta area - nowhere! Guess I'll have to wait, like much of the country! Only place in Georgia showing is in Athens (UGA). Have a blast!

Quick review from someone who is not a film guru but who just likes going to the movies.

At times it felt a little long and just at a couple of spots tedious but it also didn't feel like 3 1/2 hours long. There is a lot of character development; the duration of the film very much allows for that to happen. You feel very much into the characters.

The acting across the board was fantastic, not just from the principal actors but everyone. It is truly an ensemble cast.

The Sound of Music, The Godfather and The Godfather II are my favorite movies of all time; I have seen them each hundreds of times. I liked the movement of The Godfather and Godfather II more but, despite the length of The Irishman, nothing seemed extraneous.

My love Mr. De Niro :) had more screen time than anyone and I thought he was fantastic but I will also say Joe Pesci's performance was both subtle and powerful, really masterful.

When it ended and as the credits were rolling I tried to determine how strongly I felt about what I just experienced given the hype. I have been more affected by other movies but I believe it is not hype to call it a masterpiece.

    We just saw it today.
$9 early bird showing this morning.

It certainly was on the long end but I thought it was amazing.
I gotta think Netflix gave Scorsese a lot of leeway making his vision.

Agree with Flowers, lots of character development. Great acting all around.

If it was in the movie theaters longer, I’d pay to see it again. Can’t remember when I last did that.
