Gold Spike is a personal favorite. Four Queens has no resort fees!

All of the hotels have very similar rooms. One or two of the hotels have rooms that you may not be pleased with, but for the most part they've almost all been rehabbed and the rooms are similar. Most people stay at the hotel where they enjoy the casino and so get some type of casino rate/comp for the room.

For a strip lover's initial foray downtown, I'd recommend staying at The D. It embodies everything that makes downtown a current popular destination and it's right in the middle of it all, too. For me, good gambling, lots of variety packed into a small area, good food, clean rooms, and good comps are what draw me downtown. For some, it's the freak shows, cover bands, and party atmosphere, which do nothing for me, but to each his own.

For a first timer coming downtown from the strip, I'd say stay Rush Tower @ Golden Nugget, but I'm biased :p

I like the look of Downtown Grand, and might try to chuck a couple nights there into my rotation at some point in the near future.

If by best hotel you mean the most excellent, would be Golden nugget in my book. I especially like the Rush Tower.
