Would the Marlins move to Las Vegas? What about the Rays?

More important, would the city build a state of the art stadium?

In the NBA, would the Pelicans move to Las Vegas?

I think there is a better chance for an NBA franchise moving to Las Vegas than a MLB one.

NBA could easily share the T-Mobile arena with the VGK. Its done all the time with cities that have both NBA and NHL teams.

They just built a new minor league ballpark in Summerlin. Too small for MLB. What to do? Build another ballpark, this time at a
major league level, with 40 - 50,000 capacity? Then what do you do with the minor league park?

As badly as the Marlins and Rays should be moved, I don't see either going to Vegas. That being said, I'm really not sure what other markets would suit either.

Definitely I can see an NBA team relocating to Vegas. I'd frankly be surprised if it didn't happen in the next few years. Pick any of the small market teams that have no chance of competing for a title and move one.

Portland will get MLB before Vegas.

I think the opposite. Small market versus large means very little in the modern NBA. San Antonio, one of the smaller markets, has a tremendous and respected franchise. meanwhile, the least respected franchise is in the largest market.

The only team even recently floated as a relocation possibility is New Orleans. And my guess is that the league doesn't really want that to happen considering everything they went through with the franchise over the past decade. Even if a team were to relocate, there are two big reasons I doubt it would be vegas: the 2007 nba all star game and Seattle

The Marlins just got a new park.

In order, the only two teams in real trouble are Tampa and Oakland, though Oakland has yet another proposal on the board. Tampa has nothing cooking.

And I agree Portland would trump Vegas, but Montreal may be ahead of both of them.

Yep, Montreal makes sense. But Portland has $$$$$. How about Montreal for the NFL?

You play minor league baseball in the minor league park. In NJ minor league baseball does well, consider you have 2 NY teams and one in Philadelphia.

I think an NBA franchise ends up in Vegas first, but it could be a close call. The next NBA franchise move (or expansion) will be to Vegas or Seattle, guaranteed.

Is that Trenton Thunder and the minor league team in Somerset? The Camden Rivershark’s, the Atlantic City Surf, and the Newark team are all gone.

Montreal’s CFL team is currently being run by the league. CFL/NFL is tricky up here because of motherhood issues. The other big issue is where the exchange rate sits.right now it sucks for us, adding a huge premium to cost. Toronto has way more corporate $ than Montreal. Greater Toronto has @ 6mm people. If/when NFL comes north, it will be Toronto. Toronto would be a sell out for decades. Buffalo may not be too happy about it.

Montreal is making lots of noise about getting the spose back. I see that as most likely scenario as there is some money in the background. Montreal desperately needs a stadium though

I disagree. The size of the market isn't a respect thing, it's a value thing. The Knicks are worth far more as a franchise even in their pathetic state than San Antonio was in their prime. It's all about the money. There are simply more jerseys to be sold, more TV revenue, and more demand for Tickets (when they're good) and for use of the facility for other events (which produces more revenue). Milwaukee and SA are worth a fraction of what the Knicks are worth despite the fact that they're actually good teams while the Knicks have been pathetic since Ewing hung it up.

This is just like college football conference realignment. You think Rutgers is in the Big 10 because they have good sports programs? Rutgers is probably one of the worst 15-20 revenue sport schools in all of DI athletics. They wouldn't compete in the MAC for football or basketball. So why are they in the Big 10? $$$$ - NY TV market....

Vegas has become an unofficial Mecca of basketball. All the major youth tournaments and camps are held there in the summer, the NBA summer league is there, etc. They'll get an NBA team soon. As for baseball, I'm unsure. One issue they could face is the heat. Who wants to watch baseball in July in 110* temperatures? I know they can play night games, but it's still hot. Baseball stadiums also don't typically make for good venues for alternative entertainment either, so the cost to build the venue is harder to justify than arenas like T-Mobile where it's in constant use.

Baseball couldn't be played in Houston, Miami or Tampa without domes. Certainly, a new stadium in Las Vegas would definitely be a dome. It couldn't be done otherwise.

I look at attendance figures in box scores before I look at any other line. Baseball is a bust in Miami, always has been. Every decade or so, they rise up and have a great team and still won't draw flies until the postseason. Even with a brand new stadium, they regularly draw less than 10K. Now that Jeter is running the show, they have become a Yankees farm team.

Tampa Bay has the worst stadium in MLB. Ugly, dark and hard to get to. Even with a contender, they can't put asses in the seats.

I stopped following basketball when Allen "The Punk" Iverson came along for the Sixers. Now that the NBA put that asshole into the Hall Of Fame, I think the NBA is nothing but a huge joke. I don't consider it a sport, it is entertainment, like a traveling Cirque show. Ergo, I don't care if Vegas gets a team or not, I was speculating over if Vegas could become a 4 team city over the likes of a maybe more deserving place like Seattle.

It just seems a natural, since the facility already exists and it is a damn fine one. There are plenty of dopes around with enough money who actually claim to enjoy this crap that tickets would sell, even for the Pelicans.

As far as MLB, a lot of money would have to be invested to make it happen. It would be years away if it did. I don't know what the lease agreements are in Miami or Tampa. Now that it's been brought up, maybe Oakland would be the best bet.

I'm sorry, Ken, but I just don't see Portland as a major league city.

You're correct that they could build a dome, my point that I was making (but didn't quite finish) is that would add even more costs to a stadium that really only functions for one use and would likely only be used for about 81 days per year. I also don't really care much for the NBA these days, but plenty of people do, and they can just use T-Mobile so it's much more feasible to make that happen.

Florida sports teams in general typically struggle. Most of that is because so many people who live in Florida were born and raised elsewhere and relocated there. Rays games fill up all the time... when they're playing the Yankees ... Everyone is a transplant and they don't suddenly switch allegiances to a new team just because they move to Florida, especially when most of those people are from the East Coast and Midwest, so their original team is in the same conference and in some cases the same division.

No need to apologize, Breeze. People look at Portland's somewhat limited population, the greenies and freaks, the rain, and "don't see it." Oregonians love sports, love communal experiences and Portland is a somewhat filthy rich city with a wad of entrepreneurial wealth. With the right owner/ownership group and an avant stadium on the river -- Union Station area, maybe Ross Island area -- it would work.

Define "soon" and we can set a wager. I will likely take the over. There is a big difference between the city hosting special events and tournaments and being home for a team year round. The Maloofs are gone from the association. There is nobody left in power pushing for a Vegas presence. And there are still a lot of gaming higher ups that are anti-NBA and do not believe NBA games will bring in the crowds they want at their casinos

While Allen Iverson certainly will never be selected as the Chamber of Commerce "Man of the Year" and his personal life is/was less than "angelic", in my mind, there's no question his basketball talents made him worthy of NBA Hall of Fame membership. Best break your ankles crossover EVER! I'm sure many on this board long for the days of Hal Greer, Billy Cunningham, John Havlicek and Bob Cousy... set-shots, bounce passes and the good old lay-up, as opposed to a slam dunk, but basketball not a sport? C'mon now... these guys are human trees and gazelles on top of it. Athletes in EVERY sense of the word!

To the point, I agree with @UKFanatic about who would push for the NBA in Las Vegas. That All Star Game still leaves a sour taste with many. I also agree that Seattle would be the first choice. MLB? You're exactly correct @Breeze147... " Tampa Bay has the worst stadium in MLB. Ugly, dark and hard to get to. Even with a contender, they can't put asses in the seats." and Miami may have a newballpark, but it just doesn't seem like Florida is interested in the MLB. I think you'd find a real interest in Las Vegas landing an MLB team.

You left out Julius Erving, Bobby Jones, Moses Malone, Maurice Cheeks and Andrew Toney. Starting lineup of the 1983 Champs.

I wasn’t aware of the Camden team no longer in existence. The Phillies have a minor league team I believe in Lakewood, plus there’s teams in Montclair and far north Jersey. We go to Thunder games sometimes since it’s only 15 minutes away.
