I posted this question on Facebook and thought I met have better luck getting an answer here

Why do some craps bettors insist on placing bets "late" (when the shooter already has the dice)?

I see this frequently - usually self-placing a field bet. But also throwing in a center bet

I know it is rude and against etiquette and some dealers may call a "no bet". But still, people do it regularly. Why?

I'd love be to hear from these folks to understand their thought process.

Or others’ theories as to why this is done.

I suspect it’s kind of like the last second bets before the hand wave off at roulette; players just wanting money action on the table. If I toss out a bet right before the shooter gets the dice it’s usually a prop bet just for the hell of it.

Maybe some players also make last second bets to hedge but I imagine this would be a very slight percentage.

You won't hear from the habitual late bettors because they don't think they are the problem.

They may let out a "Sorry!" but they don't really mean it; they're the only player at the table...it's just him and the dice.

"I knew it! That's what I'm talkin' about!" as they scoop up their ten bucks.

But a last second bet in roulette doesn't interfere with the play of the game as it can in craps.

I see the question as, Why didn't you know what action you wanted 15 seconds ago? Is a last-second hedge luckier?

I know what my next move is before the dice are thrown: If that come hits, I'm going to place that number for $10 and put another $5 in the come; if the 6 or 8 hits, it's same bet; I'll buy the 4 on a hit, and the 5 or 9 is same bet.

    Maybe I'm a little OCD...

I think this is primarily a newbie issue. Newbies are prone to be in awe of all of the activity of the game and not aware that the dice have been given to the shooter.

I think it typically happens because the late bettor gets a last-second hunch due to the way the shooter is holding the dice, a change in pre-shot ritual, etc.

All I know is everyone should hop the 7 when my wife approaches the table. This should be done without regard to disrupting the game, as your money is sure to soon disappear! To not act quickly would be to your own peril.

As to the late field bettors, they should refrain.

I don't late bet. I am usually the first person to have my bet out there at any game. But how does late betting interfere with craps?

Totally illogically - it seems the best rolls are when the shooter is in a rhythm, consistently throwing the dice with the same motion. When I pick up the dice to throw them and there are hands on the table, I alter my throw. I am NOT a believer in dice control. But I do believe that the etiquette of the game should be respected.

So many reasons why the late bet. The player could have forgotten to make a bet. Some pit crew are sharp and will tell the player he forgot to make his bet. Others aren't as sharp so the player has to remember about the bet.

Some players have a "feeling" so make the late bet. I have made a place bet and luckily the shooter threw that number.

I've seen dark players make the late bet, I guess hopefully to throw off the shooter into crapping out.

But it gets a little old, if it keeps up the stick usually will shout out a warning about not accepting late bets and will call "no bet" to the people who regularly make late bets.

I personally do not late bet. I'm always watching where the dice is and don't believe late bets are any luckier than an early bet.

I do prefer no late bets when I shoot. I focus on a certain part of the felt and get distracted when my peripheral vision sees hands moving. I like to throw in a rhythmic way and late bets either make me short roll or throw the dice off the table.

Or at least I think it does.

I've seen arguments over the late betting, with the shooter putting down the dice and staring down the tardy or delivering up a lecture. If the dice hit his hands, some people get all bent out of shape, more turmoil. Some shooters will go the trouble of trying to hit the offending mitts -- I know one such player, uh, personally. Others have mentioned interrupting the shooter's rhythm.

Does it shut down the table? Of course not. Does it affect the outcome of the roll? Absolutely not -- every roll has a 1 in 6 chance of ending on the next toss.

But it can slow down what is supposed to be a fast-paced game, and I think an habitual offender shows disregard for the traditions of the game and disrespect to other players.

I am not a habitual late better. Come to think of it, it may happen rarely if at all. But! Sometimes, when your making irrational connections at the table ( last time this guy threw two 8s in a row, the next roll was a 2-3 5, wait, he did it twice? ) and weighing table manners against a hunch, Occasionally you must hear me scream “ 25 dollar hop the 2-3!!” . I even think it came close to hitting it once! But I don’t do it regularly. And my hands are not in the table.

May I add my name on this list? I do this when I get frustrated because the same players keep doing it over and over.

    This.
When I'm shooting & there's a player or two consistently betting late, I now start shouting out warnings/questions, typically it's, "Everybody ready? Everyone done?"

Now, that's not to suggest that I'm perfect, by any means. But on those rare occasions when I want to make a late bet, I just test the "no call bets" rule by making a call bet.

If you've been at the table awhile & you play for the dealers every now & then, your call bet will be honored, regardless of what that placard says.
That, to me, is the way to make "late bets".

    100% agree with this.
Every now and then I will notice I forgot to replace a hardway or a place bet.
It will always be a call with my hand behind the rail.
I can't remember the last time a "no bet " was called.

The casino does not like or want to ever call a "no bet" and they don't do it often.

To them, every bet is a good bet no matter when it is placed and they understand completely that it has absolutely zero influence or impact on the roll of the dice. The more money that is bet, the more money the house is going to win. So, why in the world would they care if you are an early bettor or a late bettor ?
