So I can choose my exact seat on a flight.. why not the hotel room as well? Obviously there would be some additional fees added for premium locations, just like an airline would do. And you can even save money by asking for a run of house option to be assigned upon check in, just like an airline would do!

I really hope that self check in becomes the new normal in Vegas within a year or two and i think this would be one feature that would help move our habits forward, even to the point of not even relying on a kiosk and just using our phones (just like an airline!)..

i know mlife has digital key features in some properties but i don't think the technology is there yet for me to be satisfied to replace the traditional room key. i don't want to take out my phone to open up my app... I want it to be like a luxury keyless entry car that only requires my phone to be on me to turn the door knob and let me in.

    Lots of reason.

    * person in the room might stay another day or two. With a plane - they ALL get off.
    * person in room might get late checkout
    * room may need extra cleaning
    * subject to the staff getting normal cleaning done

Just difficult compared to a plane. With that said, I have been to hotels where I could pick a room the same day or maybe night before. It may have been due to having status at that hotel.

Cherokee Harrahs has kiosk and it gives a couple of room choices. Works fine.

I agree... it would be nice to see it more often.

They probably will, and they will probably charge a $40 fee for early room selection.

    Bah.

So, many Hilton hotels offer this. I am an enormous fan! I prefer highest possible floor, and as far away from the elevator as possible. I chose the room I wanted 24 hours in advance, then just snagged the keys and put down a credit card when I checked in.

By the way, I recognize that @WelshBlonde was being sarcastic, but yes...I would pay $40 upfront for an exact specific room.

    Why? Because

1)hotels, unlike planes, do not start completely "empty"
2)the rooms in hotels are not cleaned in a specific order, so there's no telling what rooms will be clean. Room pre-selection would cause chaos for housekeeping
3)I wouldn't pay extra to "select" my room, because I'm completely happy with comp rooms for $0 cost.

As mentioned above, most properties under the Hilton umbrella offer this already, to varying degrees of success. They’re supposed to place you into your selected room, but if they need to move you to fill a hole or because you showed up early and want your room right away then you’re getting moved. Some might say setting the expectation that you have a room set and finding out you’ve been moved every so often is worse than just knowing it’s going to be a crapshoot going in. That and the capital investment is likely why you haven’t seen other hotel companies dive in quite the same way.

A 5,000-room hotel with 24 room categories and a 124-seat plane with one or maybe two seating realms are very different animals.

Yep... it’s sweet! I used to always get the highest floor and away from the elevator too... until one night in Atlanta last summer at 3 am when the fire-alarm activated and the whole place had to evacuate to the street via the stairwell (no A/C). Took forever to get down from the top floor, cause of all the lower floors funneling in and then the walk back up the stairs after we got the all-clear was a bitch!!!

Now I’m ground or 2nd floor kinda guy!

This all the way Nostress! Love the idea/thread @romeocasido , as I have been SUPER P. O. Ed when bumped from my booked room.

Casinos can, absolutely be douchy and swap your room for no reason if they deem it beneficial (even though WE have to give a hotel 72 hour notice if we cancel, or if we don't, we get pinged a fine).

But sometimes a hotel isn't being douchy, they're just dealing with human elements... In a city that revolves around excess.

Example: I'll always remember at Cosmo, the guy next to me had a BIG suit. They knocked on his door at like 5:00 pm, he was supposed to have been checked out at noon. He had boxers on and was TOTALLY hung over, and did NOT want to checkout. They were trying to nicely get him out, but he wasn't buying, and whoever had that room booked next was probably not happy, as there are not a ton of them.

The Hilton (Hilton Grand Vacations Club) timeshare behind the Flamingo really went out of their way to give me the room I wanted. Last year on my April trip the location on LV Blvd. across from the SLS really stuck it to me. I booked a studio for my friend going with me from Friday-Mon and then I booked a 2-bedroom from Mon-Thursday with me not arriving until Monday night; he had been there since Friday because he wanted to go to "Viva Las Vegas" at the Orleans that weekend & I already had plans to arrive on Monday. I paid something like $52 for a "guest certificate" on the two-bedroom so he could check out of his room & then check into the 2-bedroom and not have to wait until I arrived in the evening. They screwed it up & wouldn't let him check-in until I arrived even though he got me on the phone to confirm he could check-in..
So this time I booked him a studio for all nights (Fri-Thurs) and a one-bedroom for me Mon-Thurs. I had asked one of the front desk managers back in January if she could note the reservations to try and get the two rooms on the same floor or as close as was possible.
She did an awesome job and I actually had the adjoining room to his when I arrived and we had the two-bedroom together, which I thought would be almost impossible to do. So I didn't even ask her to do that. But she managed to do it. I'm going to call the resort manager today and tell them what a great employee she is. She really went out of her way to please an owner.

Hilton nailed this years ago.....us frequent business travelers love it. I've chosen my exact room online hundreds of times and never once had an issue. All of the "this won't work" reasons listed in the comments can ve addressed, Hilton manages this as close to flawlessly as I've ever seen. My experience is Vegas hotels can't manage their room types, but that doesn't mean it can't be done...and done well. It's a huge selling point for Hilton and a big reason I've been a diamond with Hilton for many many years.

Actually should an easy automated system to program.
First, a room won't be visible in the system until confirmed clean.
Second, if I am only paying for base room then only those room types are visible. The others are greyed out with a +$X upgrade cost.

Yeah just like merging player databases should be "easy". I think you underestimate the programming required. It doesn't sound like a "simple" patch.

I use my own experience with "simple changes" to complex programming. It's amazing how many "other" things that can be broken with a "simple" change.
