I had such a chance recently.
I didn't know how much advantage a player had, (I will leave that to @tringlomane),
but I did know that I only had $200 in my pocket.
I first thought about going back to my hotel room to get $2000 and coming back to play,
but felt too lazy to bother.
So I sat down at the only empty seat, first $100 in, gone quickly.
Last $100 in, got pretty lucky, 2 quads in a few minutes.
A player next to me got up and left (out of money I assume), so I moved to that seat.
A few hands later, holding just a K, didn't expect anything.

    Thanks.
    It was just sheer luck.
After I hit it, all the people on the progressive machines left. Interesting to see that.

Wow that's a big progressive. I can't believe it took that long for the Royal to hit. Congratulations!

Crazy pull! Your first drawing 4 or no?

Not surprising they mostly left though. It was 102.17% I'm guessing some of the group playing were "pros", so they are definitely going to leave after it hit. What casino was this if you don't mind sharing?

It could have been a progressive dump as well. Hard to say unless you know the meter speed. If the meter is 0.25% or less, it's likely a dump. I saw a quarter jackpot hit at Luxor at $4812 in 2014, but I couldn't get on the machine until right after it hit of course.

I took a stab at the largest quarter progressive I actually ever played my last trip at one of the Westgate bars. This was my very first hand ever at Westgate. The progressive was on Deuces Wild. Shit.

Generally speaking, I'll take bigger chances with positive progressives, but I try not to bust my bankroll over them. The game i have pictured is only 95.03% without a Royal (100.79% including the Royal).

    AWESOME HIT!!!!

    Congrats.

But - generally a "positive" progressive is no different than a regular VP machine for most hands. After all, the Royal only hits once out of 40,000 hands. So, all the other plays is no different than a regular game, right?

No it's not my first drawing 4. I had a few royals holding single card.

I believe some of the players were pros or hired by pros. I guess 2% advantage is good enough to play, for those with small bankroll.
My impression is in Vegas, once a dollar royal over $8000, pros start playing them.
It's in a Vegas local place, that's all I can say.
Good VP is harder and harder to come by these days.

    What's a "progressive dump" & "meter speed"?

Seems odd that the pros would only get interested if it was 2x the normal payout. For me, anything even a little above 1x seems like a good deal :)

Pros might be interested in a bit lower, but 102% is a pretty healthy margin to go after. And keep in mind you're still a slave to variance on these things. All standard VP paytables are negative when you exclude the royal. I can count the number of progressives over 102% that I've seen on one hand in my random visits. But i don't visit every little local casino in Vegas. And a few more that I have seen posted in TRs.

"Progressive Dump" = A casino transfers a progressive from one machine to another.

"Meter Speed" = How fast the progressive moves. If you play a machine and the progressive(s) moves $0.05 for $10.00 coin- in, that's a 0.5% meter speed (or "meter rise").

So, so happy for you @JeJas !!!! This made my whole week seeing your win!

On your question, I'd probably get off too, but not right away so as to not spoil the win for the winner. Had this on a Buffalo game, the gal next to me won 5k but she was so nice and so excited and chatting with everyone, I stayed on a little longer.

If someone was not nice, or didn't seem to care if people left, yes, I'd move on.

Royals always occur when you least expect them, unless you think that you aren't expecting one so it should hit.:noangel:

I'm surprised Bob Dancer didn't build a fence around that machine and podcast live 24/7 from it.

    Yes!

“You have to expect the unexpected. Of course, if you expect the unexpected, then it’s not really unexpected anymore. And that leaves you open and vulnerable to the truly unexpected.”
