Reno/Tahoe Player Trying Las Vegas

Hello VMB,

I am a longtime reader of the forum. I am a college professor based out of the Bay Area. I play VP and slots at about $75,000 coin-in/day minimum. I am increasing my bankroll in 2019 and trying the Cosmo for the first time in August. I'm thrilled to be part of the community and happy to answer any questions about the Tahoe/Reno properties. Not much is out there on Reno/Tahoe and I play there a lot at decent levels.

I can speak more about Vegas as I play. Thank you all for the forum and time you spend posting.

I was just at Harveys/Harrah's recently to snowboard. Had a great time, played a lot of VP and Three-Card Poker. I liked the little casino, was super chill.

Thanks! I have been going to Harveys/Harrahs since I was 8 years old (30+ years). The staff keeps me coming back. It will be interesting what happens to the properties with the CET sale in the next few days. The VP in Tahoe used to be better, but there are still some games that are the best in the US for CET in terms of getting Seven Stars quickly.

I like a guy who averages 75k coin in and plans to increase it.

Most likely you are already 7 stars already so why aren’t you leveraging that relationship in Vegas? Cosmo has 9/6 job but I’ve heard their comps aren’t that great for vp players.

 

It all has to do with ADT. The Seven Stars annual retreat requires no play, but any other trip to Vegas at CET properties will kill my ADT. Comps aren't great at the Cosmo for VP for most players. But if you bring a 30K bankroll and play 100K coin-in/day it is a different story. The 9/6 in high limit requires 2.50/hand at 10 hands ($25). With the new tax laws you are better off playing 8/5 BP at 20 hands for nearly break even vacations in the short run (better ADT and no W2Gs for Royal Flushes). I also run several thousands through some slots if I am up. I always take care of my hosts and tip big = great vacation with minimal losses.

We go to Reno at least once a year and usually stay at the Silver Legacy (most recently over Super Bowl weekend). What's your assessment/opinion of the changes made and underway at the three properties (Eldorado, Silver Legacy, Circus Circus) now that they are under common ownership and publicly rather than privately owned?

Eldorado Resorts, Inc. have been buying properties in the last 1-2 years and have not done much. They bought Montbleu in Tahoe and the property still is using Trop Advantage. The Montbleu is a casino nightmare with no in-house maid service. Check out the Yelp/Trip Advisor reviews for some laughs (including reports of aggressive poltergeists!). The Silver Legacy is a great property on par with the Atlantis in Reno (not the best...but it has charm and awesome staff). The rebranding of the 3 El Dorado properties as THE ROW was an attempt to renew interest, but other than changing a few restaurants and minor remodeling to a few floors...its the same. I love downtown but some people don't feel safe outside. I live and work in SF, so I see people shooting heroin every day. I've been in SF my entire life and it is comical how local government disregards people.

The Peppermill resembles a mid-tier Vegas strip property. The GSR is a great property for families, but I go to casinos to get away from kids. I play at GSR, Peppermill, and Atlantis. All have their pros/cons. The staff at Atlantis is my favorite. My suggestion is to play for 3-4 hours at one of the properties I mentioned. Peppermill would probably be the fan favorite. If you play slots you can have a better experience at the non-downtown properties. If you play VP...that is a different story.

 

Life circumstances found this low roller needing to go to Reno in July and August of 2017. I stayed GSR a couple of nights each tine. With little play, I have received 2-4 comped nights in my email every month since. I liked the place. BTW, I stayed there when it was MGM and the dealers marched to/from the tables.

 

4 nights at the GSR is great. I am a big player and the most I have received is 3 nights + $1000 in FP 2x/month. But those are in a suite and are unlimited each month as long as there are two days between stays. You probably aren't a low roller if you are getting 4 nights. But Reno is different than Vegas. A 5K credit line will get attention while a 20K line at the better properties in Vegas will barely get you on the radar. But I have been impressed with the Cosmo. I get email responses from my host every time in under 60 min. Great upfront comps and service.

I need to clarify. I get two nights, twice per month and sometimes limited FP, like $25. I think what put me on their radar was that I went there 4-5 times with my cousin's husband who was a regular and a big player. Some of his aura must have rubbed off on me when we played poker and blackjack together. He is an amazing guy, a retired Master Sergeant with enthralling stories.

 

Thanks Cashman. I wonder if "The Row" is now looking at win/loss as well as theo on play. We gave them more play than ever over Super Bowl weekend, but actually won overall this trip (paid for it and put a little in the bank afterward). But our most recent offer just dropped from three nights anytime to two nights anytime, with less for free play and food. Either they've upped their ante or we got nibbled because we won.

 

In my experience in Reno, coin-in is what matters. Although there was one trip at the Peppermill where I walked with $10,000 and my offers went down. But that was early on before I established a relationship with the property. Who knows? I don't have the answer, but I know it seems like the winning trips might affect the mailers sometimes. I have been on a losing streak lately so my offers are pretty good. The new tax laws are killing me.
