Oh wait, I saw Archie Karas in Las Vegas, once. He's the man who had such a big run at Binion's, that he almost won the whole darn casino. Pretty sure he is addicted to gambling.

Agreed. To me, degeneracy is someone already crushed by debt, betting every last cent in their pocket that could have gone to pay the rent or feed their family.

Not a millionaire betting thousands per hand....that's a High Roller, not a degenerate.

Somehow I think bdautch isn't even referring to gambling.

I was at a roulette table at the Stardust sometime around ‘83 playing with a guy who brought his wife and kids on a family vacation of the Southwest for a few weeks. He told me he had an RV with a boat in tow and the family was on their way to Lake Mead the next day. Real nice guy. I busted out of my buy in and came back about an hour later and this guy had several stacks of green and looked like he was doing quite well. This was around midnight. Came back the next morning around 10:00 am and he looked like he had been there all night, still with several stacks of green. But now he was betting greens straight up on numbers instead of making column bets. Came back around 3:00 pm and he’s still there, down to about half a stack of green and going south rapidly. Couldn’t watch him slide and left. Returned to the same table around 10:00 pm on the second night and he’s not there. I was chatting with the dealer, who also was the dealer the night before, and told her he played straight through until the afternoon. She told me she heard all about it from the pit. Then she told me the guy busted out, went and sold his boat and trailer and came back a few hours later armed with a few $k and blew it all in about a half hour.

Personally, I’ve never been hurt too badly. Lost my trip BR a couple of times but it wasn’t the end of the world. I think the worst was one time, again in the 80s, I had about a $300 BR for the weekend and won close to $200 for my two days there. I had a few hours to kill before heading to the airport so I checked out of the Stardust and took a cab towards the airport stopping at the Barbary Coast. Figured I’d play four hands of green chip BJ, which was unheard of for me for back then. Lost four hands in a row and said screw it and went into my wallet for $300 and lost it on one hand. That was the only time I ever went on tilt and I felt like a complete a-hole. The only bright spot was this happened relatively early for me, in terms of trips to Vegas, and I learned my lesson. For years after every time I would check into a Vegas hotel I would tell myself, “Micky, you’re one bad decision away from doom.”

To me there is the real life version of degenerate, and the VMB version, which is different and usually not as pathetic. Like eating food off a discarded room service tray in the hall, or blowing 4 days worth of gambling budget on the first day. My worst was being our of money and not having anything to pull from the ATM (back in our broke early days) but the next day was payday and starting at midnight we kept trying the ATM every 15 minutes and checking our balance until finally money was there and we could pull out some pitiful amount to play just a little bit more. Thankfully we went home the next day.

Anyone with young kids out past 8p in Vegas fits in my book.

Every friggin trip I see the token mom & dad slurping on one of those yard-long slushies while they stumble down the strip or pound away the buttons on a slot machine. Go to Disney, go to Cedar Point, go to one of the bajillion parks in your community. Don’t drag your poor kid to Vegas & then keep em out until 2am.

Saw a drunk cowboy go on tilt at the craps table in the Tropicana. It was during the NFR, and he and his friends were having a GOOD time getting drunk and gambling. He was up a few thousand when I left the table. I walked back by, about an hour later, and he was the only one left at the table. He was totally drunk, flat broke, and digging through his pockets looking for more cash.

To be clear, there is the real definition of "degenerate", and then there's the VMB good-natured ribbing definition of "degenerate".
I suspect that NFC was using the VMB version of the term!

I was sitting near a guy and his wife about 8pm. The wife went to the room about midnight and he was still playing when I left about 3am. When I went down at 8am, he was still on the same machine. He kept nodding off and would wake up and start pushing buttons, wife kept coming around and bitching every couple hours. Finally about noon, they got into a huge screaming match and got kicked out. About a half hour later, I saw them walking out with their luggage still screaming at each other.

I know a guy that uses ALL his vacation time from work to gamble, lives in NJ and goes to LV 11 times a year, 30+ times to AC and numerous times to Mohegan, Harrahs in California and KC. In addition, to Sands in PA. His gambling is out of control, but his casino obsession if off the charts. Every activity he does is intertwined with a casino, and don't get me started on his gambling podcast obsession. I guess this makes him a Degen in a round about way? Oh, he's actually a really nice guy and my friend :) - Just saying, a Degen lol!

For someone that works in the game, I see it daily. First of the month and folks go nuts and lose their whole check on MT machines. Should be a good weekend.

The amount won or loss is not how I interpret the topic. Possibly the worst display of degeneracy I ever witnessed happened just last year.

One night, I was playing first base BJ at a $10 table at The Orleans. The person on third base was betting up to $100 on BJ and $25 on the side bet. It was a double deck game and he was dealt a pair of Kings of Spades. That paid the side bet 100:1. The person was very talkative and grateful for his payoff since he was getting married in a couple months and "really needed the money".

Like some of the stories earlier, I went to bed, slept and returned to the BJ games in the morning. That player was gone, but there was someone else at the table who WAS at the same game as the night before. I asked him how the player did. He told me he walked away after tossing his remaining 2 $1 chips onto the table for the dealer. He was busted.

Saw a little old lady at the old Barbary Coast playing four slot machines at one time while chain smoking cigarettes. She played the machine in front of her, the machines on either side and then would reach over with her cane to hit the spin button on the other machine to her left. I also watched a guy playing solo at a BJ table at the Bellagio (on the main casino floor) lose $15,000 in about 10 minutes. He bought in for 5K, and was betting 500 to 1000 bucks a hand. The dealer was on fire, hitting 20 or 21 on almost every hand. He felted on his initial buy-in then raised his hand and motioned at the pit boss who then told the dealer to give him another 5K. The guy lost that in about 5 minutes; raised his hand again and the pit boss motioned to the dealer to issue him another 5K which lost again in short order. The player calmly walked off without ever saying a word to the dealer or the pit boss.

I agree that you can't decide our version of "degeneracy" by the amount someone is betting. You can tilt on penny slots or in the HL room. It's all about the budget available.

In my personal experience, it's chasing that gets me. I once lost my meager bankroll on my 2nd day because I was sure all I needed was one good win. Ugh. I think we've all been there. Now I have a daily limit and watch myself closely to see if I'm chasing or not. If I think I'm chasing, I'll get up, take a walk, maybe to another casino. ;) Don't judge me. Sometimes that's all it takes to break the mindset of pushing for that "big win".

Chasing is a big trigger for me. Sometimes I'll read a TR here where I see someone pushing in that direction and yell at my laptop or phone "Stop chasing!!! Go get some food and take a break!!" Dan says, "I don't think they can hear you if you just shout at the screen." :haha:

Years ago I went to Vegas with a good friend and each brought a $2000 budget for a few day trip. First thing we do is sit down together at an electronic roulette machine and play martingale strategy (bet $1, if you lose double the bet, repeat until you win). I play black and he plays red. The spin keeps coming up black and I keep winning $1 but my stubborn friend is getting in deeper and deeper but won't give up. After 20 minutes and 13 black spins in a row, I won $13 and my friend loses his entire $2000 budget. I still laugh with him about it every time we gamble together.

And if it controls you. I've never seen anyone toss up a 108 on the course, get pissed off, and walk back in, slam down the card, and demand another round. (Now I have seen a few clubs in ponds, however.)

Me took a $1000 down to the local and sat at a slot machine first $100 nothing not even a less than bet "win" dump another $100 nothing, 3rd $100 still nothing. Now I am taking it personal $400, $500, $600...small wins but nothing. Now the maching owes me. $700. $800. $900. I reach into my pocket and take out the last bill and down to less than $50 dollars. Finally hit and cashout out up $15.

I love that machine. Ultimate Fire China Street.

Witnessed some one playing 3CP $100 all spots blind. $400 a hand. Turned out she was the mother of a former employee of mine.
