Kentucky Derby in Vegas

What are some fun things people have done for the Derby the past few years?
Was thinking of plunking down at a bartop VP and going at it, after placing some bets.
Who are your favorites to win?

Derby Weekend is often Cinco de Mayo weekend, which is also Big Fight Weekend. I feel the Derby is often overshadowed by the fights, although this year may be good with the Canelo-GGG fight not happening.

 

Here's the funny thing:

Right now, 95% of the people out there have no idea what horses will be running. The day of the race, everyone will think they know something!

 

went a derby party a few years ago... the year chrome won.
got an invitation for the at ballys this year but can't make it....

justify will be the favorite at post time... how good is he? we'll see but i have some doubts about him.

Audible has the right style to win the derby. should be about 4 or 5 to 1 and i'm leaning that way for now.

Mendelsson looked great in the uae derby, but those horses don't seem to fire in the derby, but he does have the right dosage
as do Bolt, and free drop billy who i am also leaning toward.

usually i have my derby horse picked out by the fall but a couple i was looking at aren't going to make it.

anyway those are just a couple thoughts.

If there was ever a race to play your favorite numbers, birthdays, license plate #s, you name it, this is it.

Me, I'm just going to put my wife's birthday and my own together in a $1 exacta box: 9-10-11-12 for a $12 investment.

If I'm feeling really lucky, I'll throw them into a $1 trifecta box, too, for another $24.

 

I think that's how some of those tout handicappers do it too.

 

Mendelsson looked good when he ran end of March, I am not a handicapper but he is one that I think has a shotif he is entered,

 

Orleans last year had a nice setup last year up in a ballroom.Two betting stations open early AM and a very nice spread of Muffins and Danishes and good coffee...I only went up to see if they (Boyd) were doing T-shirts for the day,but was told not this year..I made an additional bet and enjoyed the continental breakfast.
Ended up watching the race downstairs where they had a big-screen set up and playing VP..
My bets failed but was alive around the stretch as Irish War Cry was in the mix iirc..
Nothing like the Derby excitement!

 

That's why I'm asking now; if you already know your picks you must be following closely!

for days like the derby or breeders cup i get there early,but go to my room to bet via tvg

 

I try to book the first weekend of May every year. I like Derby weekend. I stay downtown, and usually not anything too special going on, but really exciting to watch at your favorite sports book. the last 2 years I have watched it at the Plaza. I bet a little for myself and my brother not more than a $100 total.
in years past, the Fremont book was giving away t-shirts, but not last year.

 

I live in Louisville but would never claim to handicap. But for four straight years the favorite has won. The Kentucky Derby features untested three year olds and the least educated, most superstitious betting field in sports. Favorites winning is a dumb bet, pick a 50-1 with a name that looks good on a glass.

 

I'm usually in Vegas for Derby weekend but not this year.

Unless he draws terribly, Justify will probably start favourite.
I think Mendelssohn is the real deal but wish I'd bet him before the Meydan race.
Currently those two are pretty much joint favs offshore at between 4-1 and 5-1.

 

I happened to have just checked in at the Wynn when Justify broke his maiden. I immediately went to the sportsbook to see if he would possibly be on the futures board yet. Grabbed the sheet (updated that morning 2/18), and saw he was already listed at 300-1! I ran to the teller and put $30 on him. It was literally 3 minutes after the race, and he was already down to 30-1. Now, with all things since then, I am stoked to have him at 30-1, but if I had just already been down in the book WHILE the race was running, I may have been able to nab that 300-1, and that would be really something come May 5. I will be in Vegas for Derby weekend, and hope to go cash that futures bet for $930 in any case. Good luck all!

 

just saw today that The Gronk bought a share in the horse named Gronkowski who has a shot to make the Derby.
That would be one fun owners box to be in

Remember. If you make a futures wager on a horse, and he doesn't run, you don't get your money back. You lose it.

 

Very true, and it was certainly a risk, as that was only his first race. Now, barring injury, he will be in the gate, and likely 5/2 or so. I am quite happy with my 30-1 ticket.
